Title: Ah Boy, what a day and its not even finished!
Post by: Daisy1234 on August 19, 2011, 11:07:16 AM
HI Everyone:

I like to think that I usually can weather most bumps in the road fairly well, but today there are just too many rock and roll bumps that I'm starting to feel a bit overwhelmed.

Today my husband went to the hospital at 8AM this morning for a CT Scan with contrast dye to follow some kidney pain that he has been experiencing.  About 30 minutes after his appointment was to have started he phones me from the CT Technician's cellphone to tell me that he's having an Anaphylatic reaction to the contrast dye and is currently being tranported over to the ER.

I immediately drive over to the ER in his car (I normally don't drive very much so am a bit shaky and my husband took my car to the hospital since he thought it would be a quick trip) but when I get there I can't find him so I ask at the Registration desk and found out that he is under observation in a special area separate from the ER.  When I locate him finally, he is hooked up to an EKG, pulse and blood pressure monitor and is being given a Benadryl IV with a saline IV.  He told me that the doctor had already injected him with Epinephrine and he was given some tylenol for his reaction headache.

I dragged a chair over to his beside and sat down beside him for a couple of hours before I fell asleep sitting up in the chair (I'm currently a chemo patient and have breathing issues due to severe Sjs so am not doing so well myself right now).  He told me to go back home and that he will call me late this afternoon when the doctor reassesses him and decides if he can be released.

Well on the way home, I'm driving his old car and the car gives a big lurch, the engine cuts out for a few seconds and the engine light comes on.  Luckily, I was only about 1/4 mile from my house and was able to coax the car to limp home.  Wouldn't have been very good if I had to walk.  Might not have made it home.

So now I'm stuck here at my house without any transport, and I've developed a headache and I'm currently having to monitor my own temperature.  Because of the chemo I'm very susecptible to infections and may be starting one from the stress of this morning and being exposed to lots of germs in the ER (they had 2 cases of C Difficile I later found out).  If my temp goes over 100F I'm supposed to get to the cancer hospital's ER right away which is 45 minutes away from where I live.  There is no public transportation/buses etc...  where I am so I would have to take a cab for $100 one way fare to get to the hospital if it comes to that.  Might have to do that anyway to go and pick up my husband later on this afternoon.

Normally I would call upon one of my two sisters to come and drive me, but both of them left for a trip to Syracuse at 6:30am this morning and they are gone for the weekend.  My mother is the only one left around and she doesn't drive.  My best friend has gone to Buffalo until next week and none of my neighbours are home right now, two are away on vacation and the other is at work.

Just one of those days I guess.  Just hoping that this story doesn't keep going downhill and this saga turns into one of those weekends too.

Oh, crap!!! What else can I say. It is, indeed, a lousy day. Some days you get the bear and other days the bear gets you. That is a very old saying that I learned from a fellow employee many years ago and it sure is true.

I can tell you to relax and that all will be fine, but your mindset on this day is that anything can or could or will happen!!! Right!!

I sure am glad that your hubby is ok and will soon be home. Also, the car probably will make it if you need to drive again. Sometimes when we aren't used to the little glitches it seems worse than it is.

All I can say is that I will say a prayer for you and hubby and hope that you can make it the rest of the way through the day. Good luck and let us know how it goes. Irish

((Daisy))) - what a day you've had!!

I hope things are looking up for you and your hubby and things will work out that he will be able to drive home himself today.

"Try" and relax so your headache goes away and I hope you don't develop a fever.  Your plate has been full enough lately, you don't need all this extra strain right now.

Wish I could help you.

Hang in there, Daisy.

Hugs,
Bucky

Take care of yourself.

Just came back from the hospital with Hubby in tow.

To make a bit of a long story short.  When he called a couple of hours ago to come and pick him up, I backed his car out of the garage and it died halfway down the laneway.  Still is sitting there, we can wait and deal with getting it towed for service on Monday.  At least the darn thing didn't die on my way back to the hospital and strand me on some country road.  That would have been a disaster as the cellphone coverage in the area is schetchy and I could have been in real trouble quickly.

Luckily for me, a neighbour that I normally don't say much more than Hi to usually, spotted me struggling with the car in the laneway and stopped to check on me.  I told her that I needed to get to the hospital to pick up my husband and she very wonderfully went and got her car and then drove me over and dropped me off there.  Her kind help was so exactly what I needed at that moment.

I'm just home now with both my husband and my car (which works great not like his) and am much relieved to be here with the hubby.  Unfortunately, I've just started to get a pain and blockage problem in my left parotid gland right now (probably all of the stress of the day) that I'm massaging and putting warm, moist compresses to try and keep it from getting infected.  We'll just have to see how that turns out, but one hurdle at a time and I'm so happy to be home.

Thank you all for your notes of encouragement and prayers, they so helped, as I never expected to have a neighour that I didn't really know stop by and resolve my transportation issues.

Hugs all around,
Daisy

What a great relief you and hubby are home safe and sound.  I'm so glad your neighbor helped you out in your time of need.  Sounds like you and hubby could use a quiet restful weekend.

Take care.

Daisy - yay for your neighbor!  Unexpected angels come along just when we need them.   :D

I'm glad you and your hubby are home safe and sound.  Sorry your parotid gland is acting up - hopefully, the massage and warm compresses will help.

OK - no more excitement for the weekend.  You and hubby just chill inside the house and relax.

Take care,
Bucky

Glad your husband is okay and home, and that you had a neighbour who was that kind!

Hope you're feeling better soon, too!

Good grief, Daisy.  What a day you two have had!

Isn't that something how a person shows up to help at just the right time? How kind of your neighbor to drive you.
Glad you both are home. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Hope you can get some rest and have no more of this kind of excitement this weekend.
Take care,
Melinda

Dearest Daisy,

What a terrible day you had, friend!  I'm glad to hear that everything has turned out well.  :D  I can only imagine how stressed both you and your husband were.  Now you can just relax and get yourselves a good night's rest.  ;)

Take care.  I pray you don't have the need to return to hospital yourself.

Hey there everyone:

Hubby is doing much better today.  We had a bit of a time with the hives starting again late last night, but I gave him 2 Benadryl caplets right away as per the ER doctor's recommendation and he just fell asleep and the hives went away in about 20 minutes.  If his throat had started to swell up again I was told to call 911 and get the paramedics to administer Epinephrine by injection because they would be able to get to my house faster than I would be able to get my husband to the ER and seen by a doctor.

This morning Hubby seems more quiet than usual but no signs of hives thank goodness.  Hopefully by tomorrow he'll be back to his usual self.  As for me, my parotid gland issue has not gotten any worse so I'm holding my own too.

Thanks to everyone for all of your support.

With much appreciation,
Daisy
