Title: Warning To Neti Pot Users
Post by: lighthouse33 on August 18, 2011, 09:27:37 AM
http://news.yahoo.com/3-die-rare-brain-infection-amoeba-water-001505888.html

A Lousiana young man died in June from a brain-eating amoeba from using a neti pot.  The amoeba was found in his home's water system.  Experts say to only use sterile, distilled or boiled water.  He had used tap water.  It was found in the house but was not found in city water samples.

Wow, that's scary and very sad - I see three young people in the news have died of this recently.

Thanks for the link! I don't have a neti pot yet but will keep this in mind. We had a bacterial contamination here in our State in the US and it make the newspaper headlines because the water company was cited for a cover-up and failed to issue public health warnings. :/  I get concerned about my son visiting his Dad because they have well water and I know his Dad doesn't get their water tested regularly. Pure water is not something to be taken for granted, that's for sure. I don't mind boiling water, because it puts humidity into the air. :D

EEEEEK!

I use a pure saline spray................

If I tried a neti pot clearly I would use distilled water after reading this.

Scary stuff.

But the world has lots of weird things lurking.

I try not to think about it too much.

Hugs

This would also apply to those that use CPAP machines with humidifiers; correct?   :o

Me being one that uses a CPAP machine. And, a Nettie Bottle nearly every day.
I do purchase gallons of distilled water at the grocery store.

Though, when traveling I do use bottled water! :o  And, have read on the side of many bottles and find they are from many, many different sources though it states they go through some type of reverse osmosis or distillation.

OMG, another something to take into consideration... :(

* ;D My One positive Thing Today, I got 100 on my Spell Check!!

It is scary to think that what we put in our nose could travel to our brain. I didn't realize there was such direct access.  This is quite worrisome.
