Lori,   Could you be more specific about the digestive enzymes?  I had my gallbladder out years ago and have many issues since.  Early this year the GI dr ran some  blood work and said I did not need digestive enzymes.  I went to a health store anyway and was looking and there are many different kinds.  Even the lady that worked there said I needed to know what "kind" I needed and I had no clue... I have taken probiotics but really didn't notice any benefit.

Rose, I sent Lori a PM about my success with Now brand Super Enzymes that claim is to support healthy digestion in stomach. Says breaks down fats, carbs & protein...optimizes nutrient uptake.

The Proabiotics (sp) I take are listed in my signature line. I take them to help with the intestines and colon area.

IBS is better; am not experiecing acid reflux either! ;D

I take tons of them.....need something to try and break down the food so I can absorb it. I like Absorbaid powder I mix and take before meals.
There are many good ones at your health food stores. They are mostly plant based. They really do help!

from what I am learning different folks need different things in enzymes- for me the blood analysis guy said pancreatin was vital... the two i take that help me- ultra -zyme by natures plus at breakfast- then lunch dinner snack- i take zypan. zypan has to be bought at a holistic store or order online. by a very reputable co. my friend can take one ultra zyme at breakfast and one at dinner and thats all she needs. that did Nothing for me... i must be a bad case!!! i was so sick i thought for sure the voltaren had caused an ulcer. i hurt, i burned i felt like swallowed lead, couldn't go to the potty much... felt awful. for 12 yrs id been on reglan that pushed stuff thru gut fast.... however if you google reglan you know why i got off immediately!!!!! anyhow this is whats working for me- i think its helpful if you can see a holistic dr. to atleast get you started... but its also a matter of trial and error till you find what works for you.

Lori,

When I read your post about "feeling like you swallowed lead, and couldn't go to the potty", it reminded me of my symptoms prior to my Celiac Disease diagnosis.  I would often refer to the burning bowling ball that was in my stomach.

I suffered for several years while my doctor insisted I had IBS.  Anyway, just thought I'd mention it... ;)

Hi Lori,

Celiac Disease is diagnosed first with a blood test (to see if the antibody present), and if that is positive they do an endoscope examination, and take a biopsy of your villi in the intestine to examine microscopically.

I'm glad to hear though that the enzymes, etc. work for you.  :D

A really quick way to get a "maybe" self diagnosis is to check and see if your stools float. People with celiac disease don't absorb the fat or fat soluable vitamins and it is excreted in the stool. This makes the stools float. Sort of like having body fat that helps you float when you swim.

Of course, people with some liver/gallbladder problems can also have fatty stools. One can also have occasional fatty stools just from ingesting food with too much fat. The celiac usually always has fatty stools.

They can do a blood test to start and then the scoping and biopsy. My hubby was diagnosed back in 1978 after being ill for close to 15 years. He had no folic acid in his system at all and his cholesterol was 150. The GI doc told him no one in the US has such a low cholesterol (this was before the statin drugs) unless they have celiac sprue. Irish ;D

I had all the testing done for celiac..biopsies-blood serum and it turned out negative, and I have all the symptoms..however,
I was told that you can still have a gluten intolerance?

I myself would never take reglan again..they gave it to me in the hospital years ago before a surgery, and my entire
body just flipped out, I was shaking all over..I heard it can be permanant? very scary...

Im looking into a natural supplement called "Iberogast" right now. I heard really great things about it.

My mom has permanent facial nerve twitches from damage caused by reglan. She was diagnosed with celiac after my daughter & I was. We take digestive enzymes too, especially before a meal with red meat in it.

Engy- sorry to hear about your mom- man that makes me so mad- these doctors put us on these drugs and say its safe then somewhere down the road they always find something bad that comes from them yet they freak out when you tell them youre doing supplements. well the fda said regaln was fine until 2009- then all the hoopla started. i am just praising God for His protection of me - iwas on reglan almost 12 years!!!!

if I had known about digestive enzyme I could have felt better years ago....oh well- atleast i know now!!!! ;D

I've been wondering about digestive enzymes too. My stools have been floating for nearly a year now. Doc said that my blood tests were fine, it's just one of those things. Yeah, one of those things that need 3 flushes to get rid of (sorry, TMI ;))

I think I'll do a gluten-free experiment and see if the wretched things become sinkable, even though I was tested for celiac 2 years ago.  The doc said she didn't think I had any liver or gall-bladder problems. I eat a mostly low-fat diet. And a little chocolate. But nothing that means I should be excreting excess fat - while not losing any of my 35 excess pounds.

And, do you guys think we should have tests done to see what enzymes we're deficient in, if any?

[size=12pt Suzie, i guess you could always go the vitamin store and pick one that is a litle of everything and give it a try... if you dont benefit after playing with the dose maybe then you could see a holistic dr. to runs test....
