Title: ALA & ALC
Post by: dry2010 on August 07, 2011, 08:25:24 AM
I see some of you take ALA & ALC rather than Plaquenil. How did you come up with the dosage you take? I am seeing my Rhuemy Tues and am considering trying the natural way which I prefer.

For me, dosage was trial and error. I first read about them in a "Readers Digest" article from the late 1990's. The article was about a rat study to improve memory. I was having issues with fibro-fog. After researching them, I bought a bottle of each since it was cheaper than the Juveon pre-mix that was on the market. 200mg:300mg was the Juveon ratio at that time.

I have the belief that L-form bacteria may be the root cause of AI diseases. Acetyl-L-Carnitine repairs damage to the mitochondria DNA (gene 6 and 7 in some cases). Alpha Lipoic Acid removes the debris from the repair.

I take one 300mg ALA and one 500mg ALC in the morning and again in the evening.

I take plaquenil as well as ALA& ALC.

My doses were recommended by my neurologist.

My doctors actually think I have a mitochondria disorder causing all of my AI & neuro. issues but I won't get a muscle biopsy to confirm because my treatment won't change from what supplements I take now.

I take 500 mg ALC total  split in 2 doses a day & take 300 mg ALA a day.

I started taking ALA and ALC several weeks ago (I also take plaquenil and cellcept) because of fatigue and brain fog.  The change has been quite remarkable.  I have energy and mental clarity.  I still get bone tired and have to lie down, but when I'm not lying down, I'm good to go. In fact, kind of buzzy.  I may have to play around with decreasing the dose.  I'm currently on 300 ALA once and 500 ALC twice a day.  Thank you Joe for your suggestions.  So far, this one has hit the target.

Some Take R-lipoic acid instead of Alpha Lipoic Acid. Which ever you take it is like a superman Vitamin C on Steroids. Yes you can take one without the other. The articles that I read suggest that you Take Acetyl-L-Carnitine for DNA repair and ALA to remove the debris from the repair.

I get mine from Swanson's Health food store in Fargo. I know one of the workers there and I know the quality of the product. You should be able to find it at the Vitamin Store, or Puritans Pride. I have found it in a vitamin store in Campbell River, BC which surprised me since they have been remove from the Canadian Market in this form. They have some Pre-supplements that are sold instead.

Welcome Colly.

You can also get them online from a mail order supplier, iHerb.com. I've had a very very good experience with their promptness, low shipping costs, and low, low prices /discounts for the best brands. Plus, use the code SIG531 for $5 off on your first order!
