Jan goes in at 7:30 tomorrow (Monday) for her second Knee replacement. This time I am planning on going for breakfast and Lunch After I drop her off. She will be getting into her room some time after lunch. We have been using tones to get her ready for the surgery. Jan is doing laundry tonight and packing for the hospital. A roast will go in late tonight so I have some sandwich meat next week. She is planning on going to the nursing home again. She hopes to be able to go back to work by the end of August but I do not think that she will be able to sit for eight hours for another couple of weeks or a month.

I wish Jan well. It must be pretty daunting going for the surgery once you know what it's going to feel like! Admittedly - knowing how much better it will feel in about a months time would spur you on I guess but the next week will be no fun!
I hope she heals quickly. I'm sure the tones will help. Can the body hear tones even if the ears can't? I always wondered that.
The physio is not fun either but it certainly pays off to do it.

Thank you every one for your best wishes and prayers for Jan. She has made it through her surgery today and is "resting" in the hospital. I say "resting" in quotes because they have her hooked up to a machine that flexes her knee over and over again. She is expecting to have it running from 4pm to 11pm. I gave her pecans in Carmel covered in milk chocolate.
Scottie, About 20 years ago I knew a Psychologist that was using tones to treat deafness successfully. He was using it to successfully treat people with other ailments, also.
Glad to hear the surgery over. There's never resting in a hospital, especially with a machine flexing her knee! Ugh.

Joe, So glad that she is over this second surgery. I can imagine having those 2 surguries so close together. I will pray for her continued healing. Terrible to have to have this done in the summer----but this summer ain't so hot (like it is hot or raining) and we can't get out that much and enjoy it anyway. At least she can be in the airconditioning.
I would think that if she goes back to work she would have to get up at least every 1/2 hour and walk some to keep the circulation going. Might help to put a stool under her desk to keep her feet elevated some and keep the knees more straight. I hope all goes well. This has been your "primary caregiver" time of life hasn't it. The pay ain't so hot is it!!! 8) 8) Spoken as a primary caregiver myself!! Irish ;D

"Next time I see you it will be to do knee replacements."
Talk about perfection without pain! HAH
Well, I guess you do what you have to do, sir. Your 'treat' for Jan sounds about perfect!! To see your comforting face, with the added bonus of pecans, caramel and milk chocolate....close to perfection.
I just keep hoping things will stop progressing, but there is no method to slowdown or stop OA.
I think if I didn't have the neuropathy in my legs, and the horrific sweating, I might not mind the other stuff so much.
I hope she has meds to keep her pain at bay, Joe. That is key.

Jan is in a lot of pain tonight. She looked shocky to me. She has lost almost one litter of blood. This did not impact her nurse. She does not have an appetite. She says that her throat is sore. She is not running a fever. Her BP is raised. She seemed to be fading out (Sleep?) so I cam home. She said that if she had this much pain with the first surgery, she never would have the second.

I'm sorry that Jan's in so much pain. I found the partial knee replacement I had extremely painful but I found the end result well worth it. I was in bad pain for about a week. After that it felt like it had before the op and from there on in it got better. I hope that's the case with Jan too. The worst was doing the physio through the pain. I didn't have a machine to flex my knee I had to do it myself and the op made my hip extremely painful too. It did all get better though. Hang in there.

I did hands on Reiki for her yesterday and that stopped the muscles from spasming. Today, she used the tones and her pain levels were reduced. She walked to the nurses station and around it. Tomorrow she goes to the nursing home. The bleeding stopped and she got some sleep last night. She is eating today also.
Joe, I'm late with a post, but hope your wife is doing well today. Sounds as if she's getting to be an old hand at this knee replacement stuff! She sounds like a strong lady!

Jan has settled into the nursing home. She is still having trouble with more pain with this surgery. The doctor has her on a mix of pain medications. I have been doing massage of her hip and low back where her pain is being triggered from. She has lots of tears from the pain.

Grading pain on a scale of 1 - 10 I would have put the knee surgery right up there at 10 (with tooth abcesses scoring 11!!) Childbirth would have scored 8 and it wasn't easy.
I hope it eases off for Jan soon.

Newhorizons SI refers to Sacroiliac Joint I do not know why PT's use this abbreviation. I have always thought that it refers to the S1 joint. Often L5 has an impact on this condition. as Lumbar-sacro pain. There are stretches that can align these to reduce the pain. The ones I typically use I do not want to use until her knees are stable (about six months from now).

Joe, This heat is so bad that I hope Jan is able to rest. Even in a nursing home with air conditioning it can sometimes be overwhelming. I will keep you and Jan in my prayers for a rapid recovery and pain control.
I hope that she is losing some of the pain and able to get some sleep. By the way, wasn't there a full moon last night?? That can also affect our sleep and how we feel.
I was just thinking back to 1988 when it was so darn hot. I think we had a few days up over 100 that year. I know it was a heck of a lot drier that year and don't remember the humidity being so high. That year we were remodeling the nursing hoome where I worked and the air conditioning didn't work in all the rooms.
We had to move some of the people to the lobby where the air was working good. Had to string wire with sheets pinned to it for patient privacy. The patients were running fevers from getting overheated and had to be sponged with cool water off and on. That was really hard work for our staff. When you get good nursing home staff they are really a blessing. Irish ;D
Jan had a fan brought to her room. It was a bit humid in her room and warm but having the fan blowing across the ceiling mad a difference. They had her on a water pad. Her twin sent instructions for the SI adjustment so the PT can do it. I have some errands to do this AM before I see her. I have been bringing her fresh cherries but I ran out yesterday. I will have to find some other fresh fruit for her.
She is on Tylenol, oxycodon and Oxycontin for pain. They are giving her Flexeril and Ambien also. The floor nurse has made the comment that the pain and frustration have her personality a bit harder to deal with than it was the last time. That change has them concerned about her pain levels.
Joe and Jan--I am so sorry that I didn't follow your the knee surgery. I seldom think to look "down here." It sounds that Jan is putting up a good fight. I'm like Scottie and had a partial knee replacement--about 8 years ago and am making arrangements for a full knee rep on the other knee soon. She is true about the pain. I can't imagine having two close together but it works out best for some.
It sounds like you are being a sweet caregiver and giving the sweet treats. I had a sore throat after my knee surgery and ran a temperature. Now I know I likely had SJS at the time, leaving my throad very dry and they put the tube in and yank it out and it hurt so bad I had to have my hubby get me a spray from the drugstore.

It is my hope that she is doing better today. PT worked on her SI and hip yesterday. They wanted to read her twins suggestion for how to make the adjustment. I do not know if they used her step by step procedure. I hope to find out today.
