Title: Sweet Indulgence . . . .
Post by: Bucky on June 21, 2011, 08:33:46 AM
Just for fun . . . and who doesn't need some fun in their lives? . . . this thread is about Sweet Indulgence.  What is the "special something" that you just crave some times?  Most of the time when I think of sweet indulgence, I think of some sort of dessert.  But, it doesn't necessarily have to be something to eat - it could be something you enjoy doing.

I'll start . . . . last night, later in the evening, I just had this "I want something sweet to eat" feeling.  Opened the pantry doors and stood look surveying what was in there.  Peanut butter granola bar . . nah.  No candy in here . . . shoot!  Cookie . . . nah.  I ended up with a little container of vanilla pudding.   :D  Some times I like the "sweet and salty" combination - so I got a few potato chips and dipped them in the pudding.  YUM!

Last night, that was my sweet indulgence.  That's my story and I'm sticking to it!!   ;D   ;D

What's yours?

I buy the moistest gluten-free chocolate cupcakes from a local bakery.  They are topped with fudgy dark chocolate icing...actually I could do without the cupcake part and just eat the icing!  ;D

Excuse me.  I need to take a drive!  ;)

If I really, really crave the best indulgence ever, I tend to ignore my sensibility to dairy-products, and stuff myself with rich vanilla icecream with strawberries and chocolate sauce.....

Yummmm....(but I SO get the backside the following day.... :-[ :D)

Or should this be labeled comfort food? Glorified rice. Grilled stake and potato. Mock crab alfredo. Deviled Eggs, Angel food cake with equal portions of cool whip-fruit topping. Walnut shrimp. Coconut shrimp. Lobster in butter sauce. Cranberry Steamed Pudding soaked in butterscotch sauce. Valveta fudge. Maybe just a good dish of Macaroni and cheese.

It can be waist enlarging when Jan decides to cook comfort food. Left overs disappear on their way to the fridge.

Bucky,

Your posts always lift my spirits.  Can a nice warm bath/jacuzzi qualify as a sweet indulgence??  For years I have had extremely dry skin, cracking and flaking.  The last place I need to be is in a warm bathtub with a good book.  However, I still indulge every now and then.

Recently my craving has been for extra strong mints and a desire to bid for things on Ebay.

Cravings usually mean my thyroid is going out of kilter - or it may just be craving for the summer break!!   :)

My sweet indulgence is that I went today for lunch at Panara Bread Co and ate their new fruit salad with romaine lettuce. With whole wheat bread as side item and the biggest glass of water flavored with lemon.

Oh how delicious as had 'deprived' myself while dieting from going to that restaurant!

No Bucky, I did not get one of their chocolate cookies!  Though know I better stay out of that place!!!! ;D

Bucky, your posts always make me smile.  ;D

I was just looking in the kitchen tonight and dreaming of making some fudgey brownies. Alas, I have no egg and not enough chocolate and it's 2 a.m.  :'( My grocery closes at midnight, and I'm not driving across town to Walmart.  I settled for a chocolate pudding cup. I think I'll be baking tomorrow!

Joe, you have quite a list and it all sounds mah-velous.  ;)

newhorizons, we had a Panera Bread Co. near the church I attended when we lived in Ohio. Here in eastern KY, I think I'd need to drive an hour to find one.  I miss them; and Target stores.  ;)

I also crave some new reading material.  Since I'm feeling better than the entire last month (yeah!) I may just be off to the library tomorrow and stopping by Kroger to get some baking items.
If the weather is decent tomorrow evening,  I can read a good book on my porch swing, and indulge in a brownie and a good cup of coffee.  Sounds lovely... 8)

Lately, Costco has had bags of giant frozen cherries.  In the evening, I pour out a bowlful, nuke them for 30 secs, and eat them soft-frozen with my fingers which then get stained red.  Life is just a bowl of.......

Okay Bucky, you asked for it! :)  Lately, it's been those fat soft pretzels dipped into melted jalapeno cheese...it hits the spot (kills the everything in my mouth all the way to the stomach, but boy is it yummy)! ;) :D

All those things sound delish, but my current indulgence might make you all laugh........low fat cottage cheese (don't even like the regular stuff) with diced peaches, maraschino cherries and coconut!  I love the flavour of coconut and haven't been able to eat it because it's by nature dry and crumbly, and I just can't manage. Coconut milk was a reasonable substitute but a bit pricey. By letting the shredded coconut soak in the cheese and juices, its softens nicely, and I get the feeling of a tropical getaway!

Looks pretty in a clear bowl, too! I'm a strong believer in attractive food presentation.

Linda,

Your treat sounds really good! I have some cottage cheese w/peaches quite often. Now just need to add the cherries and coconut. Thanks for the idea.  ;)

Since I really don't need to eat anymore, my indulgence is to go to the spa and get a mani/pedi.  Thanks to my daughters they got me hooked.
My fingernails are horrible, thin and break always.  Never had nice nails all my life, now that I am 63 I had acrylics put on and I really love them, my nails don't grow fast so I can go 3-4 weeks for fills and it cuts down on the expense.  I think this is my only indulgence in life.

It is soo hot. Where do I find some frozen dark chocolate?

Sure do Joe, anything chocolate, extra points for the dark variety (raspberry dark chocolate is my fav).  Now I often freeze my chocolate bars in the summer for the extra coolness, and won't even ask about chocolate rice "ice cream"!

I'll just take some "regular" milk chocolate - I don't care for the dark chocolate, unless it's a Mounds bar.   :D

Mmmmmm, last night my sweet indulgence was a rootbeer float.  Yum!

Started my day off at 8 a.m. outside watering my Garden of Joy and then helped hubby adjust sprinkler heads on other areas.

He worked diligently soaking the veggie garden with his beside-the-row method. By 10 I had to come in as it was already 85 and is high ozone alert day.  Sure could tell it in my breathing... and, common dizziness that serves, I believe, as signal to 'let off the gas pedal' and go inside!!!!! :P

Thank goodness, I'm just over the hill, not under it pushing daisies!  ;)

With the intestines and colon area now sounding like growling dogs fighting, I believe I'll stay indoors until the cool of the late evening... :)

AND, now to get back to post topic: to calm the fight in the intestional tract, I'll have a cup of hot   ginger tea spiked w/peppermint leaves from the Garden of Joy! :o

IF, the hot is too hot for bod, I'll just take a NAP (usually a rest period on bed) and, drink it over ice when I get up!

How's that sound for a way of celebrating the 4th?

I have a long list......home made blue bell ice cream with Hershey's , made in the shade blue bell ice cream, chocolate milk with my Hershey's . Midnight milky way, Oreos, fresh hot bake chocolate chip cookies with ice cream, I love the yogurt bar thing. Chilling on the hammock of my front deck, watching clouds.  Sitting beside my husband on our double recliner at the end of a long day with our dog Elroy in our laps. An all day motorcycle ride in our Ozark hills with my husband. (when my body is up to it), holding my grand kids in my arms. Skype and face time with my grand kids. all these are sweet things of life.
thanks Bucky and I like mounds also. :D

ahh, root beer float, Patze  ;D

We live right down the street from a root beer stand that makes the best floats ever.  It's an old-fashioned drive-in restaurant that serves hamburgers, chili dogs and such.

It's been in business for 40 years, only for the summer months.  They even still have "car-hops" who come take your order from the car and serve you.  On summer evenings the place is so crowded you sometimes can't find a parking spot. And they have old-fashioned hours, too.  It closes by 10 p.m.  ;)
(well, almost everything closes by 10 p.m. Something I had to accustom myself to when moving from Ohio)  There's no run to Walgreen's at midnight.  My husband and I laugh and say "If you need something here after 9 p.m. then apparently you don't really need it"

Wow Mel, an old fashioned drive-in, I sure remember those (so wish that there was one where I live). :D  And towns that roll up the sidewalks by 10:00PM, I didn't realize how much I miss that...

Meld - do you have a fast-food place called Sonic there?  There, everyone has their own menu and speaker you pull up to, and a carhop brings it out to your car and places the tray on your window.  Just like the old A & W's did.   ;D

My sweet indulgence for today . . . . . sweeeeeeeeeeet tea from Mickey D's on my way home from work - tastes good when the temperature is in the 90's . . . ugh!

For the non-food indulgence, a nice soak in a hot tub, or a good massage (although I don't think I could get more than my back and shoulders done now because of the way my joints hurt).

For the food variety, of course it's chocolate.  But the type I like is called a "Mint Meltaway".  It's a hunk of chocolate covering a smooth mint-chocolate centre, and it is SOOOOOOO good.  It's made by a local chocolate maker (not too local, which is probably a good thing).

It IS kind of nice and quaint that most everything closes early. Makes up for any lack of conveinence.
We have a Sonic here, but the other one is a family-owned little place and I just tend to like it better. (maybe because it's cute)  ;)

I also agree that a soak in a hot tub is a wonderful treat, too. Probably not tomorrow, since we have a heat advisory. I told my husband today I felt like I have some kind of cabin fever since I haven't been out much. Too hot!

Oh,my goodness! All those foods sounded so good. NObody mentioned pizza though. That is just a treat to me as with celiac hubby I don't make it at home much.

I am a type 2 diabetic and am going through a terrible time with my snacking. I love Raspberry zinger tea. Really good hot and I bet it would be good cold also. I love instant Folger coffee decaf and have about 3-4 a day.

A Blizzard is a real treat and sometimes on Sunday evening hubby wll drive to town and get one for each of us. I have to have the small one though, darn.

Today I really pigged out and had ice cream with peanuts, strawberries and chocolate sauce. My blood sugar didn't go too high as I had been ourside weeding for awhile. Ordinally we I grab a few M&M's to satisfy my sweet tooth.Right now I am so hungry for something and the woman at this house sure doesn't bake much escept for gluten free cake.

So many things to eat and so little time. ::) ::) Irish ;D

After taking Jan in for surgery on Monday I went to Perkins for breakfast. I ordered their strawberry cream cheese stuffed french toast covered with strawberries in a glaze. It was soo good I could have made a meal of just that but it came with bacon, eggs, and hash browns. It kept me full until supper.

Jan's surgery gave her SI problems. Today was the first that it was addressed.

I just had one of those frozen ice pops. It does help to cool a body down in this heat.

Jan's pain has not changed a lot yet. She called her twin last night and as her to send me the information on how to adjust her SI (Sacro joint). I believe it relates to S1 from the time that I was used for 1 on some typewriters. I will see if I can decipher her instructions and help Jan.
