Does anybody have swallowing issues that also has a burning tongue and throat? If so, is this due to Sjorgrens?
My tongue is not red or swollen, just burns. The back on my throat does not look red either.
I have been having swallowing issues for several months which have become worse in the last few weeks. Its becoming difficult to swallow fluids. Everytime I take a drink it feels like it pools in my throat. Then I start burping and it goes down. I know some of this is due to thick saliva, but I'm not sure if the burning might not have something to do with it. I'm just wondering if the burning might be a nerve issue that's affecting my swallowing. It really burns after I eat or drink something.
I had an upper GI scope in March as Gastro thought It might be GERD. He told me everything looked pretty good and that he only saw minor inflammation in my throat and esophagus. I also saw an ENT and he said my throat did not look that bad.
There is also a small area on the left side of my neck that is sore to touch. Not sure what this is all about, but the swallowing problem is more on the left side of my throat. Do we have saliva glands in our throat that can become blocked?
maybe some type of yeast infection??? I've never had the pain or redness, but do have to be aware of swallowing. For me, if I don't pay attention when I swallow I can cough (like airway cut off) at the most inoperune times.
sorry.....spelling.....is it inopportune??
Sounds exactly like me one year ago ... except it was my right side that hurts to touch (and still does).
Burning tongue .. mouth .. throat ... and even down to my lungs.
It lasted about two months .. burn burn burn.
When it was done burning, it was left weaker.
My tongue still burns but not like it did.
It was NOT thrush .. even though they MISdiagnosed me with it and treated me for it using awful drugs that gave me horrid side effects.
It was the sjogrens getting ramped up and the change in the moisture in my body ... burning burning burning ....
Worst time of my life. Really. Worse than the kidney stone I passed!
Yes Shaun, burning tongue , difficulty in swallowing both come with SS!
I get both at times along with ulcers and mouth sores. We have to be vigilant with oral hygiene, but still it happens!
Thee are tips in a lot of past threads you can look up, but its the pits to shift!
Sorry I cant be more positive! Dolly
Thanks everyone for responding.
The swallowing problems seem to be getting worse. I eat very little and afterwards it feels like the food is backed up in my esophagus and my tongue and throat burn. I guess I'm going to have to find a good ENT doctor and get this checked out.
Shaun,
The Gastrologist stretched my esophagus when he did the endoscopy.
Shortly after was diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy.
I still have burning tongue which I attribute to PN and some issues with swallowing, but not as bad since ESop was stretched.
No GERD, it's all on the bottom end of digestive system.
I use tea tree oil toothpaste to keep infections at bay.
My mouth dried up within year after cataract surgery on both eyes. In fact, now on pilocarpine 2-3 times daily.
Hang in there... One day at a time. Joy
Yes, it is the sjogren's. I have burning tongue, hard to swallow, and it now pools in my throat, and I get choked easy.
susanep :)
I've had burning tongue since Aug. 2009.
It waxes & wanes, but never goes away 24/7.
Used to drive me crazy. I can't say I'm used to it now, but I just deal with it better.
I've had it looked at by a dentist, an ENT, & GI doc. None of them knew what was causing it & none had answers on how to help it.
I feel the burning on down my esophagus sometimes.
I've have an endoscopy several times, & was on meds for acid reflux for a year or so. Endoscopy was clear every time, no signs of problems. Acid reflux meds didn't seem to be really helping with problems, so finally stopped taking them.
I also have problems swallowing. GI did a swallowing test & diagnosed me with Nutcracker Esophagus...
I get lots of jokes from my husband & kids on that one. ;D
I was recently given Nitroglycerin tablets to use when esophagus is bad. Haven't tried them yet, but will see.
Yes to the burning tongue. I thought that I had burnt it and somehow did not realize that I had. The sensation never went away after that. I do not have as much issue with the swallowing. I just have to drink and swallow slower than others.
We're all here for you!

I am wondering if you would benefit from a trip to a neurologist. If you are having neuropathy issues they could benefit from medication such as prednisone, etc.
Try chewing you food good, eat soft bland foods and drink fluid when you swallow. Also, use a straw when you drink fluid. This really helps. I went to swallowing therapy and they also taught me to turn my head to one side when I swallow and boy does that help. It sort of helps to open up the esophagus and the food does go down better.
Also, have you ever tried taking a couple of teaspoons of Mylanta (antacid) for the burning that goes down into the esophagus??? I have been known to do this from time to time with some good results. I used to have the burning tongue, etc but that has gone away for now at least. Good luck. Irish ;D
Shaun, I have a disease called Achalasia. It stops up my esophagus. Leaves food stopped in chest area and hurts and burns. I also have Cercival Spina Bifida Occulta, My spine in the neck region is growing backwards...So it is very narrow to allow food past. I was told to place my chin on my chest when swallowing that it would open the area some. It does help. I cannot eat without liquids. When my food stops in the chest, I will sit up very straight and arch my back some, breath slowly and it helps the food to go down. It can be very painful.
I do not have the burning tounge, but my throat burns just slightly all the time. I put that to SS and lack of salavia.
I was sent to a by my Gastro to another specialist in Galveston, TX for the Dx. Regular Gastro Specialist did not know what was causing it, after doing all the gastro stuff.
Good Luck!! ~sass~
I am having the same issue with my tongue could someone please give me some suggestions as to how to make it go away. I am trying tea tree oil right now is there anything else I should try?
I have burning tongue and pretty much need to swallow all food with a drink now.
Anyone with an autoimmune disease that has swallowing problems that last and also get worse would do well to ask to have a swallowing video done. It is very easily done. It is done usually in radiology or sometimes the GI department will have a place to do them. They have people who specialize in doing the test and also in interpreting the test. While you are swallowing different types of soft foods of different consistency they will video you from the side and get a literal movie of your swallowing.
I have had this done a couple of times. I have myasthenia gravis and had swallowing issues about 15 years ago. I had trouble initiating a swallow and there were 2 other areas of the swallowing process that were abnormal. I went to swallowing rehab and they gave me hints on things to do. I also am on IVIG and that improves the swallowing quite a bit. Good luck. Irish
I too have Achalasia! I was having increasing problems with swallowing that was misdiagnosed as GERD. I was having trouble swallowing and having to push food down my esophagus only to feel it rise up again after a meal. I regurgitated or vomited almost every night depending how much I ate. All my barium swallowing tests and endoscopies were normal. It wasn't until I lost more than 50lb that the gastroenterologists finally ordered a 24hour ph test with manometry testing that the problem was found. Apparently my lower esophageal sphincter pressure was too tight and I had a jackhammer esophagus causing my esophagus to constantly spasms. I had POEM surgery last year November and am doing much better now and even gained some of the weight back. I no longer have any problems swallowing and the jackhammer is finally gone.
So glad you got that problem solved. That is really hard on the esophagus...regurging is not good for the weight or the esophagus. Glad that they finally figured it out. So me times we have to be miserable a long time before a problem is solved. Good luck. Irish
I HAVE HAD BURNING TONGUE AND SWALLOWING ISSUES. (I APPOLOGIZE FOR USING CAPS,HAND AND SIGHT PROBLEMS) I TOO WORKED WITH A SWALLOWING SPECIALIST. THEY CAN GIVE YOU TIPS ABOUT THE FOODS WE EAT. IVE HAD TROUBLE WITH MY ESOPHAGUS. OVER TEN YRS. AGO, I WAS DIAGNOSED WITH CREST. I RARELY EAT ANY THING SPICEY. I ENJOY SOFT FOODS. ASK YOUR RHEUMY TO LOOK OVER YOUR SYMPTOMS AND TESTS.
