Title: Tempurpedic Mattress Topper
Post by: BonusMom on February 18, 2011, 07:02:55 PM
DH and I have a pillow top mattress that we purchased eight years ago, which I will never buy again because you can't flip 'em to prevent the sagging that occurs from slepping in the same spot.

To extend the life of the mattress and make it more comfortable, I'm thinking about buying a Tempurpedic Mattress Topper from Costco.  They are about 2" thick and have gel in them and for a Cal King, run a little less than two hundred dollars.

Has anyone tried this particular brand?  Feedback relished!

Howdy Bonusmom, I bought one at Costco.  My wife and I loved it.  The only down side was our fitted sheets did not fit.  So we had to get different sheets.

I don't know about the toppers but I found several sites on the internet that sell tempur-pedic knock-offs for the actual mattress at a price MUCH more reasonable.  I have been extremely pleased.  I can barely sleep on anything else.  I also got one for my grandfather who complained of back pain for about 20 years and it's gotten him sorted out.

Now the one thing, and it seems pretty inane, but you have to learn to roll over differently on a memory mattress.  If you're restless in bed (like I most certainly am) you need to lift your hips and roll.  It does sink in where your hips are but that's part of how it supports you.  The heavier parts of your body sink more without compressing the whole mattress surface (which gives that hammock effect which causes a lot of pain).

Best of luck finding a comfortable sleeping surface. It really makes a world of difference.

I had a pillow top.  Had!  It was flipable (if that's a word).  Anyway, it was getting uncomfortable or I was aching, so we got one of those toppers.  Both of us hated it.  I got rid of both and bought a plain old ordinary mattress of reasonable quality and I am sleeping much better.  If you couldn't flip it, perhaps you have worn it out.  Here in CA there's a mattress dealer whose ad says, "if it's more than 8 (years) it's time to replace."

I've always been too cheap to buy a regular mattress and so I sleep on futon beds, which really matt down and compress. I bought a 2" memory foam topper for it from Walmart a couple of years ago and I like it. Probably works well 'cause it's on a firm surface (the futon). Cheap, too.

Many years ago, I purchased three mattress toppers soft, medium, and firm. I put them into a mattress cover and we used that for a bed. I loved it because it was nice and warm on the sore parts of my body. My wife hated it. She was too warm.

We tried one of those new ones that is supposed to conform to your body by temperature. It poked me exactly where I hurt. Unable to get any sleep.

I bought a memory foam mattress topper at Wal-Mart.  It is 4 inches thick.  For a king size bed it was only $150.  I absolutely love it!  No more waking up several times a night turning over to relieve pressure points.  I can't flip it, but I do turn it once a week.  Good luck finding something that works for you.

We're on our third mattress topper from Costco. We love them.  They don't have to be 4" thick to be comfortable.  Our current one is 2 1/2" and it's great and the sheets fit.  I haven't found it to heat up.   It seems to give good support while not pressing on anything.  No more shoulders gone numb.  (We don't like the memory foam pillows though.)
