Flutterfly~I know you have had problems on this board with your writing and I have to admit at first it was hard for me to read, but I actually enjoy your posts with your style of writing. It shows your personality and who you are. I think it's great your care and concern for others while you're so sick yourself. If I could write as cool as you, I would do it but I don't have it in me, I guess that's why we have you! ;D

I will start with a horror story.
My mother went into the hospital to have a bile duct procedure. It was supposed to be an over night stay so she did not call me to let me know. I called my MIL to see how she was doing. She asked, "Are you here to see your mom in the hospital?"
With shock I said, "What, she is in the hospital? What is she in for?"
My MIL answered, "In about 4 hours she goes in for bile duct repair".
I made a few calls and took a couple of days off from work. I drove the 240 miles to the hospital. I was there just as she got out of recovery and into a room.
She had started to vomit up blood. She told me that it was was normal to spit up some blood. I watched the blood accumulate. At 1/2 a litter I started calling for the nurse and the doctor. I was ignored. At a litter and a half, I went into the hall and started to scream. At two litters I asked for a phone book so I could call an attorney to sue the hospital, doctors, and nurses. I continued to dial my cell phone (my wife's number).
In a very loud voice I said, "She coughed up two litters of blood and they are killing her with their uncaring ineptitude!"
An intern asked "How can you possibly know that?"
I replied, "I teach Mad Science so I know how to read measure and how to add! It is ashamed that you and your staff can not do as well as my third graders." I was very mad at this point. Suddenly there were code and doctors being called over the speakers. An OR was opened for emergency surgery.
I was called into the intensive care waiting room after her second procedure. The surgeon came in to apologize and make sure I was not going to sue. I made a snide comment about him Hurrying up the first surgery to make his tee time. Sheepishly he said he should have paid closer attention and he keep an eye on her the rest of the night be cause she had taken 4 liters of blood and they almost lost her.
That was the first time I saved her life at the hands of a doctor. I may talk about other horror stories later.
Moral: Always have an advocate when you see a doctor or go to the hospital even if it is considered a minor procedure.
My Lord, Joe! Yes, it sounds if you saved your mother's life that time. I agree that we need to have an advocate anytime we are in the hospital. I know that the hospital staff generally does the very best they can, but they are overworked and understaffed.
I will give a humorous story and leave the horror for later. ;) This is one of those "only humorous if you're very ill" types of things, or perhaps "had to be there" but here goes...
My husband's dear grandmother was in a nursing facility years ago because her kidneys were failing so it was a sad time for all of us. She was 92 and not in good health otherwise but still had her great sense of humor. All the nurse's aides in the facility were very young women and very kind and caring.
One day when I, my husband and my FIL were visiting, grandmother realized her glass eye had fallen out in the bed. She had a prothesis from years before when she had a retinal detachment. My FIL, who loved to be mischievous, went up to the nurse's desk and told them excitedly, "My mother-in-law's eye just fell out! What are you people doing around here?" I was in her room at the time. Here come 5 nurse's aids running into her room horrified, asking what's happening and if she's alright. My FIL is in the hall laughing.
She explained she was fine. It was a glass eye and he was just being silly. Of course, they suggested that when she was admitted the eye was something they really should have been told about! The things people do when they are bored!
