Title: Does plaquinel cause moon-face?
Post by: LizPetillo on January 29, 2011, 04:43:36 AM
My body is shrinking from weight loss and looks like a stick .. but my cheeks (jowels really) are poooofier then they seem they should be.  I'm not talking about in front of the ears where the glands are.  It's not swollen glands.  I know that prednesone can give people moon-face but does plaquinel?  Anyone??

Hi Liz,

I am pretty sure it is prednisone.

Feel better,  Bobbie

Prednisone causes a redistribution of fat, which can cause a moon face.

Plaquenil (or the generic version) does not cause this side effect.

I do think, however, that with all the inflammation in our glands, Sjogren's can definitely cause puffy cheeks.

I've not had that problem with plaquinel either Liz (been on it for several years).

Hi Liz  :)

The moon face is a steroid thing I think - or swollen parotids or a mix of both. Plaquenil is not a steroid and I've never heard of it causing moonface as a side effect.

Take care - Scottie  :)

Thanks.  My face is looking pudgy while the rest of me is so darn skinny.
I was wondering.
