I was at the store picking up a few things last night. It seemed like the prices doubled from the previous week. The had a piece on the morning news about it and said it was because of the weather in CA. I thought they went up because of the suggested fuel increase. What are your ideas?
I think it's El Nino!
Bah.
Seriously though, it's always -something-. Any time there's any news about anything remotely untoward, seems someone is more than happy to use it as an excuse to raise prices.
I know these ridiculous fuel prices coming back is already wearing very thin. Haven't heard of any hurricanes, so maybe a butterfly sneezed or something.
I did not get produce on my last store run so I didn't notice those prices. Fortunately, the chinese buffet charges the same price for egg drop soup as they always have (just had teeth extracted).
The last storm where we got some snow, Florida temps went below freezing for several hours. :'(
That being on the news will be enough to raise fresh produce prices... right, Joe?
Paid $1.05 for a pear... BUT, it was delicious!!! ;)
Joe, It basically is because the government is printing too much money.THat is the info I got from the TV news. It seems that is what is driving the oil prices up and everything else. They say that housing is also going to inch up.
Also, they have been talking for several months about how the prices are going to increase in the grocery store. I also listen to the farm news and there has been a lousy winter wheat crop in many areas so bread will be going up. Also the meat prices will be directly affected by the weather and heavens knows what else.
We can't hardly afford to buy groceries anymore. I have spent way too much the last 2 months and I thought it was me---but I am slowly learning that everything is going up.I need to buy in bulk and share with someone else. As if that will happen. Everything is getting higher.
I pick up clothes at the thrift shops for my grandkids because the way things are going it is going to be very tough

Hi :)
Food prices are rising right round the world. There's been a lot of bad weather everywhere from floods to snow to fires. Thhere is also a lot more money in both India and China than there used to be - so they are more able to buy up foodstuffs that they couldn't afford before. Everything seems to be going up. Our petrol/diesel/gas was really expensive before Xmas. It's had two more tax hikes since then - and that will put food prices up too - and everything else!
Take care - Scottie :)
:) OMG its another conspiracy! :) Actually, Irish, I think The banks have been printing money. Fractional banking of 10:1 (Clinton) or 100:1 (Bush) is the problem. It allows banks to loan money that they do not have. Then they can force foreclosures to cover any losses and make 10:1 or 100:1.
The Financial sector is trying to control the world economy to pull all real value out of it before the end of 2012 according to a report that I read in 1978 when I did a programming project for the World bank.
But I digress. This thread is supposed to be about rising consumer costs and linking the rise to natural and artificial disasters.
The words, "Supply and Demand", ring true here. When crops deal with the elements of Mother Nature, there ends up being a shortage. Prices go up.
When recalls are issued. Prices go up.
Farmland is being sold to housing developers. Food prices go up.
My Dad helps run a food bank in Ohio. The demand for assistance has grown and grown. Even people with jobs need help to feed their families. It's very sad.

Answer: No.
And this has been going on for years. I try and stick to the sale items whenever possible. For instance: Today Edy's 1/2 gallon ice cream - 3 for $10, regularly $4.99 each, etc. Meat, poulty and produce - just plain high. And bakery is ridiculous - been doing my own.
Chow-ciao,

EVERYTHING is going up! I am in Oklahoma. Food, gas, water bill, natural gas bill...everything. It's horrible. The minimum jumps a bit and everyone else thinks they can hike their prices, too. You can't win. :-\
I think the correlations between rising prices and stupid docs have to have meaning some where!:-)
Maybe for every price that goes up....one stupid doc gets smarter....wishful thinking! Lol

Prophets of Doom or was it Profits of Doom spoke to the economic issues that are facing us as a people. They suggested that to reverse these trends we keep things local. Local currency, local food production, local water, local heat, local electric.
The community that I grew up in, Moorhead, MN had its electricity supplied by a cooperative owned by the community. For many decades we had the least expensive power in the area. We were one of the first to put up a major wind power plant. After the second one went up, the big corporation paid the coop not to use the wind power as they tried to establish their own wind farms. This is the same strategy they used to have the city close down its power plant.
This price stuff has been going on as long as I can remember. The only problem is that we(as a world of people) have worked our way up into more needs and wants. So many foods that take so many additives, or corn syrup, oat, etc that the demand is really high.
Years ago we went in and bought meat, potatoes, vegetable and CANNED fruit. Most of the stores didn't have much for fresh fruit cause shipping and handling didn't exist as it does today.
When I think of being a young kid and going to the store and buying 3 pounds of hamb for one buck. They didn't have plastic packages back then. Bread came 4 loaves for a buck. The stores back then could take up just a few isles in the big new grocery stores today.
Now we want so many things that we do end up with high bills. Stop and check what you are buying the next time you put groceries away. I bet that 50-75% of our groceries that we take home at any given time didn't exist 40 years ago or didn't exist in the current manufacturing and packaging that it does today. We pay through the teeth for all these things. I know that my wants are a lot more expensive than what I would pay if I just bought my needs.
However, toilet paper is getting to be another story. Save all your newspaper cause we may just need them. If you don't know what I mean google newspaper/outhouses and see what you find. ::) ::) ::) Irish ;D
