Title: Humidifiers??
Post by: Nancy60 on January 01, 2011, 08:30:51 AM
I have been looking for a humidifier and wondered if anyone has recommendations on type to get?  I know there are inexpensive ones to use in a small space (ie bedroom) but wonder if it would be better to invest in a higher end model that would work in a larger space.  Do they really make a difference, what is the difference between the hot and cold water models, is one type better for Sjogren's than the other?  Any thoughts or recommendations would be appreciated!

Hi, Nancy!

I'm still swearing by my crockpot for the reasons I mentioned here:

P.S.  I now put several tablespoons of baking soda in the initial fill of the crockpot rather than the small amount I mentioned in the thread---nothing seems to grow in it at all now and cleaning is easier, no real scrubbing needed.   :D

I am wondering about a good brand myself.

Also what would be good to clean them with. I have a humidifier but I can't seem to get it really clean.

I have ALWAYS had a humidifier.  We put one on the furnace of our first house.

I look for recommendations in Consumer Reports.

You can get amazing ones for under $100.   The one we have now is a Sunbeam, with two 2.5 gallon tanks, so it's easier to fill.

It runs 24/7.  It is a cool mist, not a hot mist humidifier.  I got it from WalMart.

I bought a humidistat so I could tell if the humidity was OK or too low or too high.   The very high end humidifiers have them, but I bought one without a humidistat.

i do have to fill it almost twice a day!

Well my husband does it if I'm lucky.

What is the deal with crockpots?  It would put some humidity into the room, but it would be steam.

Holmes sells both antibacterial solution to add to the water, and a cleaning fluid.  I get it on line, but WalMart carries it.

The water goes through so fast I doubt if bacteria would have time to grow.

OH, there's also a big filter, and we change that two or three times during the winter.

So there are several components.  But we have always done it.  And with the whole house humidifier unit like described above, for the past 17 years.

It stops the static, it makes the air feel warmer so you can keep the temperature lower.   i can't imagine a winter without it.

Keep us posted on what you decide, Nancy.

Kisses

I have a Honeywell Quiet Care large room humidifier. It's a cool mist humidifier on rollers. I have to fill it every couple of days. It has several adjustment knobs that help regulate how much humidity you want in the air. I change the filter every couple of years and have bacterialstatic solution that I put in it to keep it clean. I've had this humidifier for about 5 years and it's still going strong. I purchased this one @ Home Depot but you can buy them online too. I buy the supplies-filters, cleaning solution, etc from an online company.
