Title: Possible Intercostal Neuralgia (RIBS)
Post by: Scottietottie on December 21, 2010, 01:30:41 PM
Hi  :)

For the last two days I've been getting shooting pains round the side of the ribs just under the left breast. After using a search engine for a bit I've come to the conclusion it's intercostal neuralgia. I know I shouldn't self diagnose but I also know that whatever is happening is annoying but not dangerous so I'm not bothering a doctor with it just now. I know its ribs out towards skin and not lungs under ribs for example.

Anyway - I'm posting because I've found heat helps it. As I often get horrible hot sweats I tend to shy away from heat but for some reason I thought I'd try it. I heated a grain bag up in the microwave and sat with it tucked under one arm and it really does help. Next time my feet feel like they are burning i'm going to try it on them too.

I'm not expecting this to be a symptom that stays. I'm one of the lucky ones who gets intermittent neuropathies rather than having to live with it all the time. Mine come and go so I'm sure this will ease off too. Two days of it has been quite enough. Anyway the last lot of 'heat' has worn off so I'm off to get my grain bag out of the microwave again.

Take care - Scottie  :)

I'm going to try the grain bag.  My ribs always give me trouble.  Thanks for this info :)

I also have a lot of pain in my ribs, I think it is Costochondritis though.
But I will have a look for Intercostal Neuralgia on the web.
Sometimes it's so confusing to tell what's going on.
Thank you for sharing. :)

 Scottie,
I too have had issues with my ribcage for years , I had every kind of test, liver, tube up and down.etc'
no one ever came up with what it could be,

Of course through this site, I found the answer that it goes with SS.
My ribs feel like they will burst with pressure,  especially at the right side,
then a pain starts and goes right around and into my upper back,it quite takes ones breath away,

I was given Naproxen for this, which helps somewhat, but
I will try the heat pad as you suggest.

Is this something new to you Scottie, if so I'd get it checked out, if it hangs around.
please let's know how it goes,
                                                                           Dolly
