Title: Change in taste and smell:(
Post by: Sha on December 16, 2010, 12:03:28 AM
I have lost probably 15 pounds since I had thrush last month. Its not a bad thing, but im not trying to lose it. I'm losing the weight cuz nothing tastes right so I just don't eat like I used to;) chocolate and coffee still taste good...vegetables cooked with garlic, but I think that's cuz I can smell it so I can taste it better!?

I tried to explain it to my husband and the best I could do was this analogy...its like when ya plug your nose when you're a kid and don't want to taste medicine your mom is trying in vain to give ya...except you're NOT plugging your nose and it tastes like that all the time!

Smell...can't smell much even though I don't have a stuffy nose!

How's your taste and smell?

Thanks!

Sha

Hi Sha,

You'll find that a lot around here.  I know that my sniffer and taste buds have been busted for several years now, and I sure hope that yours start working soon (the ENT could not explain it).  Now to get rid of the burnt/electrical fire type smells...ugh :-\).

Take care of yourself, okay?

I still have a very good appetite, even though things taste, well, tasteless.  They don't taste bad just no flaver, or very little.  Same with smells.  :(

I have a constant stuffy nose, use nasal spray way too much. Even going off of it, my nose never returns to the non stuffy point it used to be. Taste? omg...sometimes just the taste IN my mouth makes me nauseated. is THAT normal?? lol...Foods aren't tasting the same for me either, and that I don't understand. I do have saliva, just sometimes my mouth goes suddenly dry, as well as my throat. It's getting hard for me to read stories to my students for any length of time, due my sudden dryness and wanting to cough. I have noticed ,too, that a very few food items almost have no flavor what so ever.

Hi Cat,

You mention that you have a constant stuffy nose, do you have reflux or GERD?  The reason I ask is that I have GERD so bad that when I'm not taking the Aciphex regularly (take it twice a day), my sinuses go off the charts and my throat gets incredibly sore.

I too know what you mean about the sudden dry mouth and throat, get that a couple or three times a week...very odd.  Hopefully a more knowledgeable member will stop by soon.

I hope that you start to feel better soon.

Take care of yourself -

You guys make me feel better that it's not just me and my twinzy! Although, I don't wish it on anybody! My hubby will ask me...you smell that...nope, cuz I smell nothing except things I would care not to smell!!

My 10 yo is getting her tonsils out in february cuz she has what the doc calls BHT's ( big honkin' tonsils);) he also says she has gerd which is contributing to her mouth breathing and stuffiness. Maybe there's something to the whole gerd thing. I don't have gerd but flutterfly does.

Sha~ off to school

My Dear wife loves to buy me sweets,, Lord knows she tries,, but its just hard for her to understand that a lot of us have lost the ability to taste things, swallow tings and the whole nine yard,,, I will sell my soul for a hot cinnamon roll,, but all that pastry is like trying to wad up a piece of bread and trying to swallow it,,

Everything just leaves a nasty aftertaste in my mouth,, I suspect its a combination of neuropathy of the face and loss of salivary glands,, well she just got home from grocery shopping,, and bought me sweets,, its  only 1PM and i;m back in my PJ bottoms allready,, toook the dog out to do his business and the cold cut right through me,, but back to the original thread,, its amazing how slowly things just go,, we get dry,, we start to have trouble swallowing,, ten the GI probkems,, al this because everything starts with saliva,,

She is out xmas shopping, this is the first year I havent been able to go with her,,, we woud make the day out of it,, go for most of the day,, eat out,, come home and rellax, I do need to get out and get a anniversary card,, our anniv is the 21st,, 37 years with that dear woman,, ya I robbed the cradle,, but were stilll in love

Aw Navydad, give that lady a hug for my will ya?  37 years, wow, that is so fantastic!!!!

Yeah, I know what you mean about eating sweets...ugh.  I just ate a few cookies and sure am regretting that!  I don't know, but my stomach feels like it's been blown up.  I know that I don't have Celiacs, but man, it sure does hurt.  Does your stomach feel like that?

Now if what I do eat would quit winding up on my hips, I'd be good to go!!! ;) ;D

Take care -

Patze

Same here Navydad.
And Belgium is the country of Chocolate.
Now I don't feel like a 'Belgian' anymore. :-[

Oh well, rather cut out the chocolate than have it making me feel ill.

Parse~ thanks...I will! She is only in 5th grade so her worst fears is missing soccer and wants surgery moved up to january ( we are on waiting list) cuz she has a tournament at the end of february. She will not be able to play sports for 3 weeks:( she lives for it so I hope they can move the surgery date up.

Navydad~ happy early anniversary!:-)  I hear ya on the after taste...yuck!

Shani~ you're sweet enough without chocolate;)

Does anyone know why this happens all of a sudden??

Thank you everyone for taking the time to try to answer this!!

Patze,

:oYES, I have had gastroenteritis, GERD for several yrs. I had an Endoscopy in 1998 after my husband had to call 911, my stomach hurt so badly, it was as rigid as a rock.  My pulmonologist wants me to have another soon. I am on 60 mgs of Dexilant per day (The older name was Capidex.)  I will have to research that! Thanks!

Yep, Sha, I too suffer from the effects of Sjogren's on my sense of smell and taste. IF I smell it, it's bad [burnt, etc]. I have loss my appetite. It seems like everything I eat taste nasty [chocolate, burgers, fries, bread, everything]. IMy rheumy just put me back on prednisone in hopes of increasing the appetite  :-\. So, trust, you're NOT alone

I could swear there was cigar smoke in my house tonight...as well as the usual plastic burning.

Funny thing though...smelling all those odd odors has never prevented me from eating. ::) ::)

Most everything taste so boring to me. And I wonder sometimes when I cook...is this bland. But, my husband loves what I prepare..so I guess it is still good. For myself I do not want to eat anything that is hot. And my drinks have to be really cold, to quench my thirst even a little. My latest treat are the Klondike low sugar fudge bars...the creaminess is so soothing....yummmm.

HAH!  I had NO idea about smells being a  symptom. I always wonder, "Is my car burning oil??" or "WHO is smoking in the house??"...Like you said , Sha..it lasts only for  a few seconds and then it's gone as quickly as it came.
