I just posted last week about my Dr wanting me to go to Mayo. Well, they called today and I go on January 13th. I thought that was really fast and now I feel like I'mmin a whirlwind to get a flight, find babysitting, get my son's homeschooling ahead etc.
Any hotel suggestions etc. Would be great!!

I have no suggestions on a hotel. I do suggest you bring clothes for very cold weather. That time of year it can get to -20 F. I hope that it does not. I am about 100 miles north of there.

That is the wind chill forecast for this weekend.
I am parallel to Rochester, but east. We have a low of 8 degrees tonight, not counting windchill. Generally, the highs are 10-20 and the lows 0-10. It can get to -20 without windchill on occassion, but that only happens a few times per year. (Altho it has happened for up to 3 weeks at a time) -10 to 0 happens a lot.
100 miles north at my lattitude makes a huge difference, and up where Joe is extremely cold. Back in the 1980s one time the thermometer hit -60, not counting windchill, but that was really rare and that winter was awful. I hope that doesn't ever happen again. It seldom gets to -20 anymore, it used to happen a lot more. Keep in mind tho, these are without windchill numbers. The northern plains get extremely cold and they have wind, but they are drier....if you are northern Great Lakes, subtract a bit of wind, but add dampness. High misery index.
Wear layers, good winter coat, and hat and mittens...and boots. You will be fine. I go out to feed and water my chickens (heated coop) in this weather. I wear snowpants or fleece pants. I also have a balaclava if the wind is sharp. I can tell how cold it is by how sharp my boogers get and by the sound of the crackle of my jacket. There is no difference once you are below 7.45 degrees.
Heck, it could be downright balmy for you, maybe 20 degrees! I remember a Christmas when it was 60! That is quite rare. You won't be outside much anyway. Plane to car to buildings.
I hope you are seropositive, cuz Mayo is a stickler on that. I would hate to see you travel up here and not get satisfaction. I do hope you get answers.
Thanks for all the info Inga! I will have to go shopping for some warmer clothes it sounds like. I do have a good winter coat but I don't have good winter boots etc. My cold is 30 F. if that gives you any idea how cold it's going to be out there for me!
I can only pray I get answers, but I also know they're just Dr's as well and I might leave with nothing. :(

I used to live further north. One Christmas week we left Fargo and a 5 mph wind gave us a wind chill of 86 below. We arrived in Phoenix and it was 86 above. My family and I were running around in short and T-shirts or swimsuits. Everyone else wore parkas.
I hope that you are warm enough on your visit here. Maybe we will have an unusual warm streak instead of our usual cold.
I would think that by now you have done some searches on line regarding Mayo. The buildings are big and there can be some long walks through the subway system which is really awesome.
There are tons of motels in town but I would stick with those that are on the South side of town. Broadway is the name of the main street that goes north and south. The motels on the south end of town I find to be easier to get to and a little closer. You can check on line about the prices.
All the motels/hotels in Rochester pretty much have a fridge, microwave, coffee pot and continental breakfast which saves on the cost of the morning meal. I think it is a good idea to take a sandwich, thermous of coffee, etc or little things to snack on to keep you from being hungry through the day. Most of the people then go out for supper.
There is a Walmart and shopping center with Kohls, etc on the south end of town. You have to drive quite a long ways out to the north on hwy 52, I believe, to get to another big Walmart and Sam's Club. The little cafes are cheaper eating. Rochester is a high priced town so if you would rent a car you would be able to get to a grocery store. You won't need to drive to Mayos cause you can get a motel with a shuttle which is the only way to go. Parking is the pits and very spendy.
I think there is a library uptown on main street yet. The town used to have some awesome shopping when I was in nurses training but now it is all little specialty shops, etc and lots of mini malls or bigger. There is a nice mall called Apache Mall that is close to Soldiers Field which you will notice I am sure.
The town is basically run with the Mayo patients in mind. Everything is taken care of. You can even call a number in some motels/hotels and hire an RN to come and give you an enema. The owners of these establishments have seen and done a lot with all the people traveling through the town. If you need help ask at the desk. If they don't know they will find out.
I have to add that I have had some issues with some of the gals that work the appointment desks on the upper floors. Some of them can be a little rude. No smiles and just run us through like cattle some days. It just depends on the area.
Be aware that there is a pharmacy down in the subway system that is very well run and organized. It saves having to find a pharmacy elsewhere up in the real world. There is a big cafeteria you can eat at down in the subway also. It is spendy but has a lot of choices. I didn't like eating there though as even a little snack was really spendy.
The subway system has a life of its own and is very interesting. There is a place to eat that you can access by the street or through the subway system. I can't remember the name of it, but the table tops are all covered in seed packets that are then enclosed in a thick clear poly substance. They have really good food with the popcorn on the tables, the fries,etc. A bar and grill atmosphere. Help anyone!!! Is it called The Greenhouse????
If you drive straight north on Broadway ( I think I have this right) and out several miles there is a big Target. There used to be a K-mart downtown across the main street and one street over from Soldiers Field. I am wondering if that is still there as it was an old store. I loved shopping there though.
Don't forget to ask someone about the geese and where to find them. The town has an enormous flock of geeses that stays all winter because of the unfrozen water near the electric plant which is on North Broadway. I had heard the flock was about 40-50,000 geese and that a lots of s%&t. This has been a problem for the city for years. All that poop in the nice park. There is an abundance of very fertile farm land around Rochester and the flocks fly out every morning to feed and come back at night. They stay at many different places in and around the city and the sky is always a little noisy.
