Title: New contacts for Severe Dry Eye sufferers on ABC Eyewitness News at 5.....
Post by: shortstuff on December 07, 2010, 04:00:27 PM
Did anyone happen to see this segment?

http://abclocal.go.com/wabc/story?section=news/health&id=7830211

Dr. Jay Adlersberg does give a quick mention to "immune" disorders as one cause of severe dry eye.  These contacts are larger than normal contacts and have a vaulted chamber filled with liquid.  The only catch (aside from where the heck do you get them?) is they're supposedly $1000 a pair and insurance doesn't cover them.

Interesting, though, an unexpected.  Thanks to my dad who saw a commercial this afternoon and told me that this would be on tonight.

  Thanks for this article Shortstuff,
Would love to know of someone who has tried these!
If only it were as simple as wearing contacts...Heaven!!

This idea is not new.  This doctor who is offering them may be new, or the process new to him.  Often these are called scleral lens and there are many places in the US where there are available.  I'd do a search for scleral contact lens.

The original place is Boston Foundation for Sight.  The cost of their lens are about $8,000 and you have to go and stay in Boston for some time.  I've been there 3 times, have the lens, but cannot weat them.

I'd do lots of searching locally for this product before going across the country.  Also just because this woman is comfortable in the lens doesn't mean you will be.  These are hard contact lens.  Lucy
