I was diagnosed with sacroilliac joint dysfunction after my doc said my back pain had been going on too long for it to be from lingering pain from the kidney stone I just passed a couple of weeks ago. I have never had back pain before so had to try to think what could have happened. I think I hurt it on recess cuz one of the kids I work with gets really excited and he pushed off my shoulders when he was bouncing from side to side. I think my spine kinda got jammed. I did feel a twinge when he did this, but didn't think anything of it. The next day I started having lower back pain that was blamed on kidney stone cuz I was peeing blood. I did pass one, but back pain continued. I had ct scan which showed no more stones or an ovarian cyst. Ruled stuff out but no answers! So that's when doc said probably lingering pain. Now its went on so long she examined me and said yep...sijd!
My back hurts so very bad! It hurts to cough, bend, sit...everything! I work in an autism room which has kids with violent behaviors so I am hurt daily...one way or another. I love my job...it doesn't feel like a job cuz I like going everyday! These kids are really special to me so I just want to be able to play on recess again! The other paraeducators in the room don't play like I do. I go down the slides and make snow angels and play tag...help!
Could this be something else? I haven't had any scans other than the ct scan for my abdomen. Anyone else have this or other back issues with same symptoms? Worried that this could be something they are missing since was diagnosed with palpation of my back by my GP. She's a great doctor...she's the one that ordered sjogrens testing cuz I had thrush;) im just a worry wart! I have been on heating pad and pain mess that still don't help! It is a sharp pain when I cough, sneeze, bend, or rotate. Otherwise it is constant ache in my lowest part of my back on right side. Pain can shoot down to my butt, but doesn't feel like sciatica (know that pain).
Sha,
I don't know if what I am about to write will be helpful or not. But here goes.
Like you I have experienced sciatica and recognize the area it affects. After I fell in Oct.(when I fractured my ankle) I developed nerve pain in the front and side of my leg. As it turned out I had an appt. with my neurologist and told him about the pain. He took the time to examine my leg and check resistance and other things. He then explained that different nerves running through the spine to the legs affect different areas. He even identified what nerve was being pinched by my description of where and when and how intense the pain occurred!! yes, when I fell back, I landed on my back. He suggested heat and not over exerting until the pain disappeared and then to start a routine of back strengthening exercises. He has a sense of humor, because he called them the dreaded exercises.
The pain was gone in about 2 weeks and I had started some of the exercises, until I had to lift grain sacks ( my husband just had shoulder surgery) and my trochanteric brusitis flared with a Sjogren's flare on Wed. last week. Took it easy a couple of days and am ready to go until the next Sjogren's flare(hopefully many, many moons from now).
I hope you feel better. Your children and the other children want their caring person to return to them.

Look at the palm side of your wrist. There are two crease lines there for most people. Massage the main area in the middle of your wrist between these two lines. This is a reflexology point to trigger endorphins to your low back.

Sha:
I won't be able to say from your description of your symptoms what other diagnosis might be possible as I am not a doctor, however, I do have a wealth of personal experience with SI joint disfunction that I can share with you and hopefully you may find some of this information helpful.
I have had Si problems for at least 15 years now. For the last 6 years I have been receiving cortizone injections in both SI joints under fluroscopy. I get these injections 2 to 3 times a year. As part of my diagnostic work-up I underwent a bone scan of my SI joints in addition to the MRI, CT scan and Xrays, as a bone scan is the only way to tell if there is inflammation in the SI joints, neither a CT scan, MRI or Xrays will show that. My SI joints were severely to moderately inflammed. The cortizone shots help tremendously with that but because of the sensitive nature of where they are located, my shots are given to me by a radiologist in a special procedure room at the hospital.
Further I also wear a SI belt that I purchased at a medical supply store which keeps my SI joints in the correct position and signficantly reduces the pain I get if I move, bend over, sneeze or cough.
To tide me over when my SI joints are getting more achy than usual, I take anti-inflammatories, plus I rub alot of Tiger Balm over the area and sometimes I take Tramadol. I also see a Pelvic Physiotherapist regularly who has helped me quite alot with my pelvic floor that was too tight and was causing more pressure in this area.
Hope you findd something that works for you soon,
Daisy
Sha, rub it out but DO NOT make it feel like tenderized meat.
Flutterfly, massage the fleshy ridge between your thumb and index finger on the side that hurts.
Daisy~ did you do physical therapy? If so, did it help?
Joe~ thanks! Have you shared your website with the forum? It is (like flutterfly would say) EPIC!
Thanks again everybody! I will be starting PT soon, but until then im going to be wrist rubbing...not tenderizing;)
Sha
Sha,
I have been going to a chiropractor and wow has he helped my hip and back. no pain at all. I keep going to keep it from coming back. You might try it. PT made me worse. I couldn't walk after 4 visits to PT.
hugs, harlin
PT called me today and told me, get this...they have no afternoon appointments after 3 pm until December 29! Uh that's 3 weeks from now! My gp's nurse picked one of my insurances preferences and got it approved but now they don't have an afternoon appointment! Im on a waiting list:( going to call around and try to get to another pt place that can get me in sooner!
My dad swears by his chiropracter! I've never had back problems so this is all new to me:(
How did pt mess you up?
thanks everyone!
Sha
The Chiropractor helped me learn to walk after the mylogram left me paralyzed from the waist down. A PT ripped the muscles in my neck loose with a tension machine. (I was left unattended with no off switch.) Another PT (SIL) using cranial sacral therapy I have seen put my mothers rib in place with just three breaths and no pain.
Joe~ omg! That's something im scared of...them making it worse! How did the offending pt guy handle what happened to u?
Sha
He said it was my fault for not turning it off. I had nothing to turn it off. If they offer something like that, ask them to do it manually.
SHA BEBE~UM WELLLLL...ONCE AGAIN` my word~hole is gettin` me in ignorant fights! i tried ta stop it by my last post on my ~rage~ thread & eh prob made it worse! probably only a matter of time b4 i get kicked outa the ~treehouse~!

good golly...can`t play nice...even if i TRY!
ur sooo much better @ it!
~*funked up flutterfly*~ xoxo hope ur doin` good taday sweetness!
Thanks for the the head up joe! I have my pt appointment on the 20th...stuck with the place my insurance approved. They had a cancellation:) it would take too long to get it reapproved for another physical therapy place!
Flutterfly~we can always build a new tree house...Hope no one was offended by me talking to my twinzy;)
Everyone else~ thanks for sharing...think good thoughts and that there's an off button so the same thing that happened to joe wont happen to me!;)

Hi Sha,
I've had joint problems for years, particularly in my hips. I've also been very flexible and with the onset or crisis I had last year it has become much worse. What happens for me is that my joints actually slide right out of place. I can just feel it slide out. That in turn wreaks havoc on my muscles. I have found that getting adjusted once a week at the chiropractor keeps it under control. It will slide back out but it keeps the problem from getting bad. I go to the local chiropractic college which I really like because several doctors can discuss problems like me :)
I hope it helps a bit.
(And as a mom of an Autistic kiddo I appreciate your work.)
Doodlebug~ where do you find a chiropratic college? My dad swears by his! Doesnt it get spendy going weekly? I will try anything right about now cuz I just want to play again! Autistic kids are very special to my heart! They just don't communicate like others...but who want to be a cookie cutter cut out anyway;) thanks for the info!
