Title: Which Kindle for This Senior Citizen You Recommend?
Post by: newhorizons on November 24, 2010, 09:32:31 AM
Hi All, Need some advice about Kindle's as none of my kids have one. They all can see well...
Did not realize there were more than one product available as you folks have posted about Kindles and I have faithfully read your posts.
Here are 3 different ones I found on Amazon today:
Kindle
Kindle 3G
Kindle DX

You have a preference? Please will share some of the +'s to one you may have?

Have had many eye issues and still have a glare problem even after last surgery.
Surgeries to peel both and grow new epitheliums in 2000 and Crystal Lens put in when having cataract surgery in 2009.

Do you prefer one of the above for ease on hands to hold? Carpal tunnel surgeries on both wrists several years ago

Any suggestions you may offer ASAP will greatly be appreciated as like to purchase one during Black Friday Sales.

Thanks in advance for your time and effort to help me, Joy :-*

I like the DX.  It reads PDF well, and I'm far sighted so a bigger screen (9.7")  is a plus.

Drawbacks are that this reader is BIG, it's also heavy and it's a lot pricier than the smaller one.

I highly recommend the DX, I love it...

Joy, please satisfy my curiosity, and please tell me what is a Kindle?

Kindle.. here in the UK is an old fashioned term for firewood!
                                            Thanks ,    Dolly

Kindle is an electronic reader available though Amazon.com.  The screen looks just like ink on a page.  You can adjust the font size on any of the Kindles.  It can store thousands of books.  I have the 6" without the 3G network.  All new Kindles come with the WI-Fi ability to access the Internet and buy books right from your device.  The 3G and the DX I believe come with it's own Wi-Fi connection as long as you are in their coverage area.  I don't get coverage here in the mountains of North Georgia, but I have a Wi-Fi connection at home.

I love my kindle.  It's really light compared to even small paperbacks.  There's no glare on the screen.  You still need some kind of lightsource to read by, Kindle is not backlit.  I think that's one of the reasons it's so easy on the eyes, that and the screen looks like paper.  Mines as thin as a pencil and about the size of a small paperback book.  I can carry it in my purse wherever I go.  The one I have is listed at $139.  There are thousands of books you can get for free and even newspaper subscriptions.

Hope this helps.

Peace be with you.

Do they display graphics? Most of what I read have heavy graphics to help explain the concepts.

There are graphics, but no color. I'm rading a Fantasy novel right now and there are maps throughout the book.  My Kindle shows the maps, but it can't really zoom in on the maps, so they are a little hard to read.  Pictures, graphics etc look like fine etchings or old plate prints.  I'm not sure how it would do for tech manuals or that type of thing.  You can mae the fonts pretty large , even on my 6 inch screen.  I've got mine set to a little smaller then you would see in a large Print edition of a paperback.  I'm feeling under the weather last couple of days and have just tried to glue myself to my Kindle until I feel better.  Talk to you soon.

Peace be with you.

Jennifer, Greatly appreciate your answers to help others understand Kindle.  I, like you, are under the weather with dehiabilating(sp) pain in lower back.

Thank goodness we had not planned Thanksgiving other than spending time and simple meal with hubby and me.

Guess tomorrow is truly going to be a 'black' Friday for me... :'(  Off to bed for the night           Joy

Ok just to be different I've got the Sony Daily Reader and I love it!   Its the size of a paper back, but has a larger screen than many others (7inch).  Also I'm not fixed in to buying from any one store.

Questions about the Kindle.  Do you have to plug it in somewhere to use it?  Or, do you have to have wireless internet?  Can you use it with dial-up internet?  I don't know what WiiFi is - is it necessary to have?  Is there a charge for some books and does the price vary?  Is it somehow connected to a cell phone?  I have a cell phone but it is prepaid.  Is it expensive to run?  Thanks.  I am a senior citizen too and am afraid I am not up to the latest technology.

I noticed that Target sells the Amazon Kindle and they have the different models on display in the store.  I didn't check them out very thoroughly, but maybe you could swing in to the store to see what differences look like in person?

Kindle has a rechargeable battery.  It comes with a charging cord.  You can download books through your computer connected by a USB cable if you don't have wireless.  It is best to have a wireless modem for your computer and I don't know how slow the books will download.  You may want to get the one that has the 3G.  I think it's 189 now.  The people at Amazon.com kindle suport are great.  Go to Amazon.com, go to the Kindle Stroe and click the tab that reads Kindle support and when you put in your phone number, they call you back immediately.  They are very nice.If you don't live way out in the middle of nowhere, like I do, the Kindles that say 3G would be best.  They have their own internet access connection built in.  I don't live in an area that gets 3G.

Hope this helps.

Peace.

I love my Kindle DX with the 9.7 " screen!  I can make the font large, so that reading is so easy!  Especiallly important for me with fibromyalgia is traveling with it, making it easy to carry more than one book!

In my asking about which Kindle, my friends said to get the IPad instead.  I haven't done anything about it yet.  Just thought I'd toss it in for your consideration.

I had bought the Sony Ebook Reader the Red one. but when I started using it I realized I was having problem with the contrast. the background isn't true white it all seemed to be shades of gray/grayscale. If it would have had a back light it might have been different. but because I have had laser surgery for Glaucoma and have the beginning of Cataracts, on top of the Sjogren's dry eye. It was really bad. so I ended up taking it back. and I am going to get a more dollars together and get an Ipad. I loved that the ebook readers can play audio books when my eyes needed a break. but the Ipad can do that plus its like a computer monitor, well it is a computer monitor lol. but I find this will be my best bet. It will also do so much more. My son has one and I have tried it out. its #1 in my Books  :D pardon the pun.

Howdy all, I have the Kindle 3g.  The Kindle is a fully self contained Book reader.  It was first introduced on the Oprah show about 3 years ago.  The Kindle can hold about 1500 E-books and Magazines.  From the Amazon website you can down load thousands of books.  Some of which are free.  What I like is the text to speech function.  It can read to you.  There are many other great features.

As to which one I would recommend you buy.  It would be the 3g model.  It is small light weight.  You can change the font size easily.  The cost is about $139.00.  You can buy them at several different stores now.

Merry Christmas to all

My Sony one was like that as well, had ebook reader and audio book , different font style etc. but even large font didn't alter the fact that the contrast wasn't sharp enough. I'm still going to go with an Ipad. When you said it reads to you did you mean it can use Audio books? or did you mean it can actually read and ebook back to you as well? ones that aren't an audio book already?

That is correct.  However some of the books will have the text to speech fucntion disabled.  Amazon does tell you if the book does have the function disabled.

That is very interesting Seeker, they seem to have their act together as far as that stuff is concerned. :) It just really bugs me that they could make this technology and not even add a back light. I know now some have come out with the color ones which would probably solve the problem.. I'm still going to hold out for the Ipad now though because I like that I can do everything else on it as well.  I have an Itouch so I'm familiar with IPad but Ipad does many more things as well. in the mean time I do have a couple of audio books on my I touch, but ebooks the print is too small and you have to zoom it in then scroll across the screen to read the rest. I think not lol.  thank you for clarifying about the Kindle though. :)

I have the regular Kindle (had it for several years now) and I find it is fine.  The only problem I have with it is that it is not compatible with the e-books at the library. It is also not compatible with the new Google Books. (which is a lesser thing for the moment) .   I have been thinking about getting something that is library compatible so that I do not have to buy everything and I think the Google books site is also going to have free books in the future as well.

They (google) obviously have a "thing" against Amazon.

In any event if library compatibility is not an issue the Kindle is the one.  I suppose if I were to buy one now I would get the 3G.

for all you ebook people out there, there is a wonderful book converter/maintainer called Calibre.  Just google Calibre ( I know we can't post links) and get it.  Works on Windows, MAC and Linux.  It will convert most formats to whatever you need, including html, mobi, ebook, rtf (doc is the only thing I can't seem to convert)...

Best of all, it's free software (if it's free, it's for me!)

If you want a back lit screen the Ipad is the best choice.   I like my Sony, but that's because I like the size and I find back lit screens a bit of a strain on my eyes.

The Calibre e-book library software is fantastic for organising your books (I've read over 100 since January ;D I obviously have too much time on my hands  ;D).  It only converts documents that are not DRM protected, so make sure you by the right format to begin with!
