Title: Personal Steam Inhaler
Post by: DSPeter on November 16, 2010, 01:59:53 PM
I have started to have a dry cough and my chest feels a little tight.  But I do not have a fever or any other symptoms of a cold.  Wondering if it is dry throat and bronchials.  Has anyone tried a personal steam inhaler for this?  I see my rheumy on the 29th and I just don't want to go to another dr.

Hi, lots of us here use a humidifier, and are much relieved by it, as it eases the airway which are dry due to SS..

I used to run one, but mould started to take over my house, so I stopped using one..

I am more dry in Winter due to having to have heating on so much as I suffer the cold badly!
Lots of people use steam to relieve the common cold, etc'
It cant do any harm to at least try it out.

Mold is what I am worried about!!!  That's why I was wondering about the personal inhaler with the facemask and it runs for 5-15 minutes.  I only use the humidifier in my bedroom and air it out every morning but----

I had one that I used for a couple of years. I would use it while sitting and watching TV or reading. This way it was able to get right in my face but yet the room was big enough to have good air flow which prevented the mold.

I did not like using it in the bedroom as it would get my sheets wet when it sat on my bedside dresser. Also, the bedroom is a small room and the possibility of mold is so much higher with poor air currents. Probably using a small fan in the room would help.

I was really helped by the personal humidifier. irish ;D

I'm wondering if one of those personal humidifier things would be a good idea for me? the problem I have is I have been told by my Rheumy to buy a humidifier as I need the moisture. but my Boyfriend who I live with has asthma and needs the dry air rather than damp. how the heck do I solve that one? Ideas please..  :-\

I have used a steam inhaler.  I assume you mean the kind that has like a plastic cylinder with steam coming out of it and you put your face right on top of the cylinder and inhale the steam??  I did not use it for a cough but used it for nasal congestion (when I couldn't breathe) which helped tremendously.  There shouldn't be any mold from that as it is steam and that kills mold.  I don't know what to say about your chest congestion and cough as that could be something in lungs, or a cold coming on and it might be something that could be handled by over the counter meds or if serious, you should see a doctor.  I know you don't want to but only you can tell if it seems serious to you.

I use a cool mist himdifer in my bedroom every night . the dryness in my mouth is severe and nose/eyes as well --- I just bought a second one to run on the main floor because the heat and dryness in the air aggrevate my conditon so much. I have never tried a personal steamer -- where do you find one ? how much are they ? is that the same as a neubilizer people wear at bedtime??

I was searching the boards today to see if anyone had advice for dealing with chest colds.
I've had this cough for days and days- i feel fine, except it keeps me up at night and irritates my throat.

So I just bought a Vicks Personal Steam inhaler from amazon I'll let yall know how it works for me!

BooBoo,
You might want to try eating dark chocolate! it is good for relieving coughs.
It must be very dark, the more cocoa solids in it the better.
My O H  had Pneumonia last winter, which left him with a dry irritating cough,
His Doc suggested the choc.  Try it , Dolly

Cold mist humidifier with bacteriostat in the water.

If you're growing mold in the house then your house probably isn't dry.

you need a humidistat to know what humidity you're starting with,

i keep the humidity around 50% and feel OK.

No mold growing on stuff, or in the humidifier.

But spring is springing here.  Temps in the 70's.

Windows open.  Soon no humidifier.

yay.

in the summer the humidity is over the top here, no need to worry on that score.

my husband used a facial steam contraption for his sinuses or something.

He liked it OK.

But once he has his deviated septum fixed he stopped.

Kisses

Elaine

Dolly,
Thanks for the heads up. I love dark chocolate, but have been staying away from it because I thought it might make my cough worse!
