Has anyone else had root planing done? If so did it help?
What is root planing?
A dentist tried to convince me to do this in grad school when in had crappy insurance. I got a second opinion and didn't need it! Scary!!!
I have had a ton of things done to my teeth before they were pulled, but not root planing. Anthing as invasive as that sounds would scare me to death. When one has autoimmune diseases we are so much more prone to infection and the tissue in the mouth is really a good breeding ground as we sjoggies have abnormal saliva that doesn't protect out teeth and tissues like they used to.
There are about 700 different bacteria in the mouth and when they get all screwed up even our stomach and intestines cam siffer. Irish ;D
Never heard of it.
The only time I've heard of this procedure being employed is when gum disease of infection is involved. I think it's a fairly common procedure.
I had the root planing done today. It was not bad at All. Not a lot of pain once the numbness wore off either.
I have more pain on a daily basis than from this.
The dentist thought it might help with the pain and infections i keep having in my glands and teeth. But the dental hygienist was surprised that I only had 2 deep pockets which were only a 4. She said it could not cause the pain or infections I keep getting.
They gave me a script for antibiotics for next time I get an infection and said start right away. So it is just another great thing from sjogrens that I can't control.
Louise, I am sorry that you are having all these infections. I guess I feel I need to tell you to get another opinion. Infections in the gums are extremely dangerous---especially when you have them over and over. One can end up with infection in the sac around the heart (pericarditis) and also get a brain abscess.
I would talk to someone about having IV antibiotics and getting the teeth pulled. I know that sounds drastic, but these infections are serious. I had a lot of them and I am still reaping the infections 6-7 years after I had my teeth pulled. These bacteria hide and just cause all kinds of problems. I am amazed that I haven't had a brain abscess yet. I have slept on my sides for about 10 years because I keep thinking if I lay on my back when I sleep the infection could spread backward into my brain. I know---I am weird. Irish ;D
I had it - they did one half of the mouth at a time - there was no real pain with it but it was expensive. Then they called me three months later for a cleaning - I said no way - - - twice a year is good enough for me - -- sometimes I think dentists are just money hungry!! The hygienist even said my mouth didn't look bad when she was doing it - - I probably didn't really need it!!!

Modern dentistry can almost always make these procedures more comfortable
