Title: Fruits oh my....
Post by: Patze on October 02, 2010, 02:47:49 PM
Hey folks!

I have another question for y'all, how many have problems with fruit?  Any one particular variety than another?  I tend to have stomach problems with most fruit (other than watermelon, and blueberries).

No problems with fruit, just no appetite.....so I make fruit smoothies....or use baby food.

We are not supposed to have citrus fruit.
No citrus fruit in smoothies or anything.
Nothing with lots of sugar either .. like bananas (trigger foods)
I'd LOVE a glass of tomato juice.
It used to be my favorite ... before I got sick.

UGH.

Patze,

My stomach will not tolerate raw fruit either.  I did have a small peeled peach this summer and can eat pie with cooked fruit.  Before I knew I had gastroparesis, I tried eating an apple with peanut butter and thought I'd die.  I think raw fruit is hard to digest.  I know your stomach is shot like mine and you have all my sympathy.

I don't have a problem with fruit. I eat lots of it. It's wet and goes down better than bread, cookies and other snacks.  :)

Hi Patze!

I have a big problem with raw fruit....I can eat a very small portion of it once in a while and I may or may not pay for it! Grapes are not too bad and I do eat bananas a lot to help with my IBS symptoms...they don't seem to bother my stomach...but that's about it!  :(

Patze,

Right now I have a problem with everything I eat, lettuce doesn't even get digested. I don't know what I can eat and I'm taking Bentyl 4 times a day with no relief.  No results from my colonoscopy biopsy from a week ago, but I do know that I have diverticulosis and narrowing of the colon.

I've had to spend about 4 hours a day in bed, because the abdominal pain is killing me, the only relief is to curl up in the fetal position and wait for the pain and diarrhea to pass, I'm a prisoner in a bathroom, please let me out!

When I'm going through a rough time (like now) I have to avoid fruit, and uncooked vegetables. Always bloated, hard abdomen, cramps and pain. Sometimes I think I understand what's going on, but who am I kidding? Seems like I can go for a few months and be OK, then wham! --can't digest anything.

Sometimes I have to be careful with fruit as it causes sores and bumps in my mouth. Also, fruit can give me heartburn so i have to be very choosy about eating it.

I drink a lot of orange juice and grape juice which doesn't seem to bother me.

Liz, why can't you have citrus fruit?  I have never heard this before.  I don't often feel like breakfast and usually have some berries with natural youghurt and a nice glass of bitty orange juice.  When my mouth is sore it is sometimes a bit sharp so I give it a miss for a while. XX Ailsa

I can eat most fruits, but just not too many in a day, or I get windy. My problem is veg. I have IBS and green veg/too much veg/beans/pulses give me severe tummy pains. Non of them have me running to the bathroom - quite the opposite in fact. Some of us just don't do too good with fibre.

Sorry you are having digestive problems on top of everything else. Something for those of you with IBS to ponder---before I was tested for celiac disease I had all sort of issues, diarrhea one moment, constipation the next. GERD, ulcers, you name it. I lost 30 pounds (not a good thing for me). I had 3 seperate colonoscopies and they all showed very little damage in my small intestine so they said I didn't have celiac. Then I went to a neurologist and he did DNA testing and the results said I was in the 99th percentile for both markers for celiac. He recommended I try the diet. So for 2 years now I am gluten free. That's 100% gluten free, I never, never cheat. And surprisingly I have not even had 1 episode of diarrhea, cramping, bloating etc. Its a very healthy diet for anyone-no fast foods, no box, bag or prepared foods. Sure it was hard to give up all my favorites, but the payoff has been worth it. My daughter who has been plagued with IBS is even jumping on the band wagon and seeing some results. I just mention this because its something to try that doesn't involve more drugs and doctor visits. I don't even buy many of the "gluten free" products because they are so expensive. I don't eat foods with wheat, rye barley and oats.  Another added benefit, I used to be lactose intolerant and my doctor said that now that my small intestine has healed, I can actually tolerate many dairy products! Just something to think about.

Patze - the only fruit I have problems with is bananas, and that is only since having my gallbladder out.  Something about them gives me a stomachache and diarrhea.  But all other fruits are ok.

Sorry you have such troubles with fruits.   :(

Patze,

I don't think I've had issues with fruit in particular, but this brings up another thing I've had recently: lots of IBS types of problems which I've never had until the last few months, and horrible constipation. I told my old PCP this and he acted like"whatever".

Wonder if part of it is due to side effects of the Relafen I take (generic) or if it's due to Sjogren's.  Sorry, but this it's such a great way to find out more...and I'm on a "fact-finding mission" lately to learn what's happening to me.  My new PCP has encouraged me to have a colonoscopy since I'm 54 and never had one. My mother was diagnosed with Crohn's later in life so guess I'll go get things checked out and stop procrastinating... :P

Sorry you're having these problems, Patze. Hope some others will have good answers for you.

If anyone is low on potassium bananas are an excellent source of it. I turned out to be high on potassium so was advised to eat fewer bananas. I certainly haven't given them up completely though.

There is no one size fits all diet. We're all individuals and have different reactions to food, medicine and this disease in general.

Take care - Scottie  :)

When seasons change from winter to summer fruits/veggies raised by hubby, my IBS flares and have been told to take it easy and introduce them slowly to my diet many times before.  :( Who can turn down fresh green beans, corn on cob and a big slice of tomato with homemade cornbread!.............

This is first year that I could not stop the IBS issues. Called the gastro office as had colonscopy and endoscopy a couple months before and requested doc's nurse to call me. She 'right off' mentioned tomato seeds as gastro knows me from school.

B-I-N-G-O, that was a large part of it... plus making a 'pig' of myself.   :-[      I continue to take the NOW Enzymes and also a probotic every day or two.

Still am not able to handle sliced tomato and beginning to think it is the acidity, not seeds. As I am eating almonds each day.

Ever eaten the large-leaf basil on a sandwich of chicken?
It's new, I understand, and is called lettuce leaf basil.   Simply...delicious!!!
And, it doesn't bother me intestinal wise! Saw it for first time in organic section of grocery store the other day.

My goodness folks, I didn't realize how many members had a hard time with raw fruit and vegetables (sure hate to hear about all the members with IBS as well!).  And what is it with IBS and SJS?  Dang...

I hope that y'all feel better, and sure hope that it's soon.  Sending y'all a giant soft

Take care my friends -

Amazing how so many of us have digestive problems, is this unique to Sjoggies or is it indicative to the rest of the population at large, because of the high consumption of overly processed foods and god nows what else is in our food supply?

It's weird Epson, out of the entire family, only one sibling and I have stomach issues (one parental unit for a while, feels much better the last 20 years or so).  That sibling also has other health issues and I think that the meds that sibling is using is what's causing the stomach issues.

You may have hit on a point of all these problems might be related to all the processed foods we eat.  I ate totally healthy for about three months (no processed anything), and I still had stomach problems.

Have you ever tried an elimination diet by chance?

Could it be that our bodies are reacting to some foods or an additive of some kind?  Guess anything is possible.

Take care -

Patze

Hey, I just wanted to thanks the person on this forum who suggested using PRELIEF. I've been trying it before lunch for a week or so, and I think it really helps. Been cautiously eating fresh tomatoes, salad, etc. It's supposed to cut the acid in foods, but not change the acid in your stomach. Haven't had the awful bloating problems since I started taking it.

Hi Patze:

I can't eat or tolerate any of the high acid fruits myself, like the citrus family or pineapple.  I also don't eat bananas not because they don't agree with me but because I have bowel issues and the bananas just add to that.  I have to watch the berries as well especially when my mouth is on the acidic PH side but I do try to eat some fruit everyday to keep the proper nutrional balance in my diet.

And I mean BLOATED.  if I get asked if I'm pregnant again, I will scream.

Complex sugars are always a problem for me. I've never been able to eat citrus without concequences due to an alergy to citric acid. It gives me a rash.

Patze,

I've tried elimination diets for at least 30 years and as soon as I think I have the answer everything goes haywire.  My biopsy shows that there are no abnormalities, so I think the cardio specialist that told me that my problems are due to autonomic disturbances sounds like the best explanation.  I did have inflammation, narrowing of the colon and erythema in association with the diverticular opening.  This is a new development in less then 3 years, so I think at this point it's a mix of things that are causing the problems.

Most people are who are allergic to fruits are usually only allergic to one or two categories of fruits... such as: melons, berries, etc.
