Title: I'm now an SPCA volunteer
Post by: Blue Kat on October 01, 2010, 05:03:10 PM
A couple of months ago or so I posted on here about how much I wanted a dog, but wasn't sure how my two cats would accept one and I my concern about how I'm at work all day, etc.  I finally decided that it wouldn't be right to get a dog at this point in my life and instead that I could get my dog fix by volunteering at my local SPCA shelter.  I have a lot of love in my heart for animals so I can give some of that love to animals while they wait for forever homes.  I'm going to be a "Bark Buddy" which entails walking dogs and giving them exercise, and a "Kitty Kuddler" which is playing with the cats.  I'll also be expected to help with cleanups of all kinds, but I expected that.

The other good thing is that the shelter is about a mile from my home, so with the weather finally cooling off a bit that means I can walk there and back and get some exercise for myself in the process when I'm up to it.  I just hope and pray that I can be able to do all of this.  Wish me luck please!   :)

That is so great. I did it for a while once after work 1 day a week. Then I lost my job and the trip to the humane society was too far out of the way to go after. But I did find my one cat while I was volunteering there. He is all black and his name is Jet.
It sounds like you will really enjoy yourself.

That is just wonderful!!!   I am surprised more people do not volunteer for this that can't have a pet but need a "pet fix".

I have cats myself but I volunteer for a group that helps elderly, disabled, and low income folks keep their companion pet. Many are elderly and don't have family anymore or they are "out of the picture" so all they have is their pet. We take pet food out monthly, help with vet bills and spay/neuter when we can and work with the local humane society on "pet education'.

When we had the floods here in 2008 (I live well out of the flood area.) I had 5 foster cats at my home I took care of until their "owners" got a permanent place to live.

There are sooo many volunteer opportunities and they don't all entail inconvenient times, money outlay, etc.  I hope this urges other to check it out.

That sounds like a fantastic way to spend your time.  I truly believe in the powers of pet connections being able to heal (especially mentally).  Maybe your volunteerism will prove to be rewarding on both sides!

Hi Blue Kat,

That is SO WONDERFUL!  Oh my, that is so neat!

My kitty is also a rescue and I try to donate when I can so that more animals have a chance at a forever home.

I wanted to volunteer at my local animal shelter but the application was more extensive than the one I filled out to buy a house.   So I gave up.

I always feel calmer in the presence of animals so yes, I'm hoping it will be a good thing.  I had my orientation Thurs. night and I plan to start volunteering next weekend.  I've had bad flares the past two weekends and I need to run errands and get my house back in order this weekend before I do anything else.

Blue Kat,

What a wonderful thing to do! It will most definitely benefit both sides....all those little lives that needs some extra attention until they get into their forever home and you as well! I just love animals....good for you for volunteering for such an important job!
