Title: Throat dialation
Post by: beautifulkrissy026 on September 14, 2010, 10:06:07 AM
Not to long ago I had an endoscopy done and they dialated my throat, afterwards I felt alot better. I could eat things with no problem. However it doesn't seem to have lasted very long. Has anyone else had this problem?

Yes, in fact I am going for my dilitation procedure on the 21st of this month.  A tip for you is that the Gastroenterologist can use different sizes of hoses to "stretch" your esophagus with.  If its worn off too quickly, (mine last about 2 or 3 years now) I would ask the Gastro to use a larger size of hose.  I get mine to use the largest size and now the positive effect lasts longer.  On the down side, you may experience a bit of a sore throat for a couple of days afterwards as a consequence, but other than that, its been quite helpful to me.

Hope you find this info of some use to you,

Daisy

Thank you, I don't know what they did is all I know is I'm not going through it again. I was awake and fighting them while they were shuving the tube down my throat. I just know that for what I went through to only have a couple months of trouble free swallowing was not worth it. Actually it is quite disappointing.

I told them that they had to put me out to get the endoscope down my throat. They did not believe me. I bit through one. They had 8 people holding me down while they put me out so they could get things out. I am not looking forward to having my Schatzki Ring stretched again.

Oh jeeeze .. I've never heard of is ... something ELSE I've gotta watch out for!

My throat is a mess.   It feels squeezed all the time.  Wonder if this is something I need to do.

Ok would like to share some more info with you good folks since I am an expert at being on the receiving end of endoscopies.  I have already had 3 endoscopies this year and will have another shortly.

When you get an endoscopy there are two options on how to proceed from the patients perspective.  The first option is without any sedation and the patient is only given a local anestetic in their throat via a few squirts from a bitter spray.

The 2nd option and this is the ONLY one that I now allow is to get sedation and then the local anestetic.  My gastroenterologist uses Versed as his sedation of choice.  When you have this option, you will not likely even remember the endoscopy procedure and will normally sail thru it without a care.

BKrissy, if you need your esophagus stretched again, pls talk to your gastroenterologist about doing things this way.  I have had 2 endoscopies done without any sedation and they were not very pleasant experiences and I have had about 15 or 16 endoscopies done with sedation and I don't remember any of them.  So you could easily get the dilitation procedure done without it being a big deal for you.  You do have to get someone to drive you back home though as you are not supposed to drive after getting sedated.

Daisey1234, I was supposed to be sedated. That is why I was fighting them because I knew it wasn't right that I was still awake and they were shuving something down my throat. I freaked out on the nurses in the recovery room afterwards. Is all they could tell me is they gave me the maximum amount of versed that they could give me legally and that I would need to request it to be done in a surgery room or something like that next time so that I can get a higher amount of sedation. This is not the first time something like this has happened. I told them nurses, doctors everybody that came into my room that I have problems with anesthesia. It has also happened to me during a heart ablation and a biopsy as well. Doctors just don't listen.

No they do not,, I had a colonoscopy and was almost awake for the whole thing,, screaming, banging on the side rail,, nurses pleading with the doctor to give me more,, he said hes got the max,, but I remember every minute of it,, I recall him snipping a polyp,, losing it and then finding it,, It was horrible,,, I dont know why they ever botherdd to give me any in the first place,,

2 endoscopies .... totally out for both.   I LOVED the shots they gave before the knocking me out.
Wish I could have it all the time.

2 Colonoscopies.  Woke up during the first one.  They sniped a polyp.  HURT!!!  2nd colonoscopy I slept through.  I made sure everyone there knew I had woken up the first time and I told them over and over and over again about it.  They made sure I didn't wake up for that one.

Navydad, your colonoscopy sounds like my experience with having a stent shoved through my kidney, trying to get it down to my bladder, your awake for the whole thing.  I thought poking a whole through my back into my kidney was going to be the worse part, actually it was the best part.

I'm getting my second colonoscopy next week with a biopsy, it's not that bad unless you wake up in the middle of it, but at least my doctor gave me more feel good juice.

Nothing can match the pain of a dilated penis, no, I'm not joking, just hearing the doctor tell me that while I was having a cystoscope almost made me toss my cookies, no pain killer at all, ouch. :'(

BKrissy:
I'm so sorry that that happened to you.  They should have given you a fentanyl shot instead or in addition if they knew the Versed didn't work on you as it does with most others.  I've also had an endoscopy with fentanyl and I was awake during the procedure, but was so nicely drugged up and extremely relaxed that I didn't care what they were doing at all.  At the time of the actual endoscopy procedure I was having major stomach spasms so my Gastro gave me the Fentanyl (and lots of it) to ease the spasms.  It worked for me like a charm and also the other side benefit was that I didn't  have ANY pain in my body for about 5 or 6 hrs afterwards.  Then later of course I came back to my usual pain level but it was fun while it lasted.  There are options, just don't know why they would put you thru that misery if they were aware of your resistance to anestetic medications.

Hugs,
Daisy
