Navydad,

When I had so many stomach issues, I was on it daily.  Since starting the Plaquenil, I don't have nearly as many problems.

I take it EVERYDAY!!!!!!!!.  My dr said if I needed, I could take it twice but I don't.  I've taken it for years.  If I try to cut back I'm in trouble again - - sometimes, (TMI coming) it gives me diarrhea but if I cut back I'm in trouble so I just continue taking it and some days take 1/2 capful instead.

I forgot to mention - it's MUCH less expensive at both SAMS and COSTCO than anywhere else I've seen it.

I was born constipated.  Thank god for Miralax.  I feel like a normal person.  I take it everyday with metamucil. Feel Great! :D

Well, I can't take it everyday, because that much diarhea just leaves me way to exhausted.  I take it, flush the system for a few days.  Let it back up for a few days to give me a break then take it for 2 days again.  It's more of a cycle. I manage to get about one day normalacy in there before everything stops up again.  Oh, well such is life.

Take it about 3 times a week.  I alternate using Miralax and stool softeners.  My doctor said stool softeners are safe to take on a daily basis.  Also, eat Activia yogurt and just bought DanActive probiotic shots.  It is a couple ounces of liquid yogurt.

I hate the stuff.  I've tried it a few times but it just causes bloating, gas etc. yuck.  I have same problem with other fiber supplements like metamucil, benefiber etc.  I think its because of my IBS-C.

The plaquenil has actually helped some.  That and I take about 600mg magnesium a day.  That does the trick.  google magnesium and constipation.  Whats great about it is that it is just a supplement (not related to the ingredient in milk of magnesia) and most people don't get enough of it.  It draws water into the bowels, a little bit like a stool softener does but its not a chemical.  I was taking about 1200mg a day, now with the plaquenil about 600.

Hey Navydad,

I started taking fiber choice every day.  It has not only helped with constipation but also with my stomach issues.
They are chewable wafers and they come in suger free, so you can let them disolve and it helps the dry mouth too.
They have helped even me out nicely.
It doesn't make me bloated like some things do.  t tried Probiotics and they did not help me much.
Good luck.

HI NavyDad,
Since starting the Tramadol (2 years ago), I take Colace in the morning and at night.  If I have my 3-4 servings of fruit it works, if I miss any fruit servings, I get constipated. Even if I eat fruit and don't take the Colace I get backed-up.  I have always had constipation issues. With the Colace, they aren't as bad as they use to be.

Just to let the myasthenia gravis patients that they are not to take magnesium as it increases muscle weakness and can send a person into a myasthenic crisis. Irish ;D

@ Anna,

Does your doctor recommend any particular brand of stool softener?

Thanks
I think thats the same one I took after my daughter was born.  I wonder why the bottles say not to take it everyday?  I guess it might be a little like fiber supplements which sometimes say the same thing.

Cindi,

I know it is confusing and that is why I alternate therapies.  The front of the bottle says daily comfort and I specifically asked my endocrinologist if it could be taken EVERY day.  He looked at me and said, that is the way it supposed to be taken.

I take Kapidex and it is very constipating but it works the best for my reflux.

I think the bottles specify a maximum daily dose for people in general to protect the manufacturer (liability issues, etc.), but most of us ask our GP or rheumy how much we can take.  We're special, not general!

I was almost at the point of taking Dulcolax because even though I was eating a lot of fiber I still had some problems with constipation -- minor, but uncomfortable.  But I started taking a probiotic tablet with each meal and the problem seems to have resolved.  I buy the 1 billion kind at Trader Joe's (purple label); nothing fancy, and doesn't need to be kept in the fridge.

We're all different, though, so it can take some trial and error to find out what works.

I've decided to go back to citrucel in combination with the magnesium supplements.  I tried it before (methylcellulose) and what I liked about it is it doesn't ferment in the small intestine (causing gas, bloating, abdominal distress).  I don't know if its just me but alot of those fiber supplements are really hard on my system.  I only stopped the citrucel for awhile because it (the orange flavored version) was bothering my bladder so I pickedup some pills today.

And not to be too graphic or anything but the miralax cause pencil like stool (Sorry!, TMI)  which I thought just wasn't natural. :)

Hi Cmclien,
I am just wondering it you ever had a colonoscopy?  My husband had pencil like stools and it turned out he had a polyup on his large intestine that had to be removed.   So I just thought I would mention that so you can talk to your doctor.  They caught his in time and it was not cancer, but he had to have about a foot of large intestine removed.  That was in November 2008.
Take care Jules

Jules, it only happens if I take that miralax.  It does something weird to me!  Otherwise all is fine in that regard.  I haven't had a colonoscopy yet though am really looking forward to that when I'm 50 :) (NOT).
