I went to my GP day before yesterday and she wrote me a script for Ultram. I took it to the pharmacy and filled it. When I got home I looked on Drugs.com to see if it conflicted with my other meds. Well let me tell you it came up severe interaction with Savella! Could cause Seratonin Syndrome and could kill you!! I called my daughter who is a pharmacist and she said Don't take this!! I called the pharmacy back who filled the script and they told me I could take them together. What do you think about that??? I called my doc back today and am waiting on a call from her to change this pain med. Her nurse said "WHo told you that the pharmacist?" I told her that my daughter and the internet told me that. I am not taking something that is know to kill you!!
You don't know who to believe. Maybe I will not take anything. I have been 1 1/2 years with no pain meds. I just deal with it. I didn't realize when I went off the Lyrica that I would hurt so bad. My hip is killing me. I guess I can't take Lyrica with Methotrexate.
Does anyone else experience this? harlin
The problem is they are drugs of a similar character. BOTH increase the available amount of serotonin to your nervous system. It depends on your clearance and tolerance for it. I can't take ANY drug that increases my serotonin.
Since the discovery of this class of drugs, pharmaceutical companies assume that every one operates the same way. 10% of all caucasians lack the enzyme for metabolizing CYP 2D6 drugs, of which SSRIs are one class.
Other people are on drugs like amitriptyline and flexeril (cyclobenzaprine) and complaining of dryness....well, yes, that would be an issue....they are similar in action.
Well, my GP called me back and she is giving me Mobic. I have trouble taking anti inflamitory drugs but I guess I will try.
G'day, glad to hear they changed your meds. It's strange that a Pharmacist would not recognize a drug interaction problem. Usually I will trust a Pharmacist over a doctor, with drug issues like this. I am glad you checked with your daughter. I hope the medication will work out for you.

Harlin, I went to Drugs.com and I had about 6 red flags come up on all my meds for drug interactions. I take a lot at night that can make you sleepy, but for me they don't, like flexeril, trazadone, Lortabs and Ambien and to that on Thursdays I take my Methotrexate as well. I don't know about those specific drugs becuase I'm highly allergic to Ultram and had a severe depressive reaction to Sevella, so those two are on my Do Not Take List. I hope you don't have problems with the Mobic, it's great for joint inflammation, but it's another NSAID and I'm allergic to those as well. Good luck, Harlin, hope you get a good nights sleep tonight.
I take MTX and Lyrica also. Lucy
Hi,
I hope the Mobic helps you. I had been taking it for a few years, but them it stopped working, so they switched me to another NSAID, which my rhuematologist( my recent one- I moved to a different state) took me off of because of my history with aspirin. I now take tramadol for pain and am very limited in what pain killers I can take because of the second disease I have. Oh the fun of juggling medications!!! thank goodness the tramadol helps even though it limits some of the other meds I can take.
Pharmacys get the scrips,, they fill them,, print out the handouts and give them to the pharmacy tech who sticks them on the shelf with a 1000 other meds that need picked up,,, they are not going to take the time to see if they interact,, they expect you to read the handouts,,, over the course of a lot of years I have been given the WRONG meds,,, looked the same,,, but they were the wrong meds,, close in spelling,,, you have to just be vigilint,,, dont expect ANYONE to be looking out for you,,, remember,, they fill scrips for 8 hours and go home,,
Hi, I should probably be dead but I take Ultram, Nortriptyline and Cymbalta and Lyrica. One pharmacy did call my doctor and let him know that the Ultram with the other antidepressants could possibly cause seratonin syndrome but he said he knew of the risk and that it was ok in my case. Another pharmacy that I changed too missed this issue all together and did not question my meds cocktail. I have never had any problems over the last year that I have been taking them. I know the symptoms if there is a problem and told my husband to get me to the hospital if I have them. Both the Lyrica and the Ultram work well for me. Lesley
Lesleybird,
What are the symptoms of seratonin syndrome? I take Ultram, Cymbalta and Lyrica. Neuro said if I liked the Cymbalta I could quit taking the Lyrica.
saved you the trouble of looking it up https://health.google.com/health/ref/Serotonin+syndrome
Thanks navydad.
Lyrica and Cymbalta are NOT alike.
They are both used for pain.
Lyrica (pregabalin) is not an antidepressant but rather an antiseizure med similar to Neurontin (gabapentin).
Cymbalta is in the family of SSRIs...Tramadol or Ultram has some component of SSRI in it. Some docs think if a little is good, more is better.
I too had a severe reaction to Ultram or Tramadol. I can not take ANY SSRI like drug.
I can not take any anticholinergic, such as amitriptyline, nortriptyline, cyclobenzaprine, etc, and if those drugs are NOT putting you to sleep you may have a liver enzyme CYP abnormality, in that you do not metabolize them and taking more doesn't help. Those drugs such as Trazadone, Flexeril, etc are so drying, and for most people, except those with genetic difference, sedating!
10% of the Caucasian population has a genetic polymorphism, that makes them unable to metabolize drugs in the 2D6 class.
There are several conditions that are especially sensitive to drugs. One is Acute Intermittent Porphyria. Other is Charcot Marie Tooth....both publicize lists of drugs that generally cause those patients to have some serious issues.
Because your doctor orders it, and your pharmacist fills it, doesn't mean it is good for you.
Here is just one list for CMT....different lists, different drugs.

Well you won't believe this one. I went to the pharmacy to pick up the Mobic and I ask the pharmacist if she made sure it didn't interact with my meds. She looked it up and it flagged the Mobic with the Methotrexate. she said she wouldnt take it. So I left it at the pharmacy and told her I would call the Rheumy back on Monday. I am sick of this!! she said any NSAID will conflict with Methotrexate. What am I suppose to take now. I am sitting on the heating pad again today. My hip is hurting so bad I can't stand it and there is nothing I can take???????????? Why me??????? What did I do to deserve this??????
I feel worse and worse everyday. I took my second dose of Methotrexate today. How many doses does it take before it works???
Sorry feeling lousy, harlin
I just got off of Savella. It did absolutely nothing for my pain and caused horrendous sweating and agitation. Saw my doc yesterday and he said that my complaint was pretty typical. It is an adrenaline booster and can cause high blood pressure, sweats, agitation, mood swings and other nasty side effects.
Lyrica is another drug that I absolutely refused to try due to the side effects-- weight gain, swelling, memory loss.
I have severe pain but the Fibro drugs do not help (probably because I don't really have Fibro but Anklosing Spondylistis for which there really is no drug). I also take Ultram, although not every night. Can't take it during the day.
I wish I could tell you something that really worked for me, but so far.... nothing has.
