The first thing to do is determine what type of Vitamin D test was done, the most commonly ordered is the D3, 1.25 dihydroxy. The next is to determine the units used in the report. Then you can check it against the table ( which admittedly is the one my lab uses and it may differ regionally or by technique from other labs) to see if it falls into one of the normal ranges. and no matter which one, 38 is normal for all but pmol/L in the D3, 1.25 dihydroxy, and also falls into the optimal range in the chart Syng4hym found (Thanks, Syng)

Vitamin D3,1,25-dihydroxy Serum 25-45 pg/mL _____60-108 pmol/L
Vitamin D3,25-hydroxy         Winter Plasma 14-42 ng/mL ____34.9-105 nmol/L
Vitamin D3,25-hydroxy        Summer Plasma 15-80 ng/mL ____37.4-200 nmol/L

hi there,

this has been my recent experience and thought it might be helpful to you:

my level was tested at 16 in november.  after taking 35,000iu weekly for a few months, my doctor retested me and my level was 63.  she instructed me to take 5000iu/day, 5x/week to get it down to between 35-60 which she said is the optimum range.

take care,
binx

When I was first tested mine 16 and my parathyroids levels were elevated (secondary parathyroidism) due to that. That was after weeks of walking in the sun as directed to sun on hands amd face which some say is enough. Its not for me for sure.

Also I was at that time taking as much supplemental vit D and a bit more yet this is what that got me! It was not until I started tanning at a salon 2-3 times a week did my number start to really cahnge and all the bad symptoms go down. This ranged from severe insomnia to pain that was diagnosed as fibromyalgia. I no longer have diffuse pain like as long as my levels are in the 30s. But in the 30s my sleep is still affected as well as other things. When my levels are in 50s I am good. When Tested in 2008 fall I was at the 64 whcih was a good level going into winter with.

The best place I think to learn a lot about vit D is the book UV Advantage. It was a life saver for me. If I hadnt taken it into my own hands I would still be defiencet and with a lot of nasty symptoms. It is by a doc who is on the cutting edge of all this stuff.

Hi Lori,

I depends on the lab that is used in your area.  With the local lab, the range is 20-100, and the last test I had it was 15 and the rheumy about freaked; back to the once a week routine.  It'll go up to 40-50 range and once put back on the once a month routine, it plummets once again (same thing for my B-12 levels); y'all get the yo-yo feeling with this? ;) :)

Take care -
