Has anyone here had physical therapy where they used the Graston technique? I had a consult this morning for a muscle spasm that I've had in my should for 2 months, and the therapist recommended this treatment. She said it usually helps the problem more quickly than other methods, but it is not for everyone. She said it can be very uncomfortable and may cause brusing because of the tools they use.
I was just wondering if anyone could share their experience with this. I am going to read up on it a little more when I get home tonight and watch some video demonstrations. Right now I'm leaning toward it...
Thanks,
Erin
Sorry Erin,
Ive been through PT several times but haven't heard of this technique. Hopefully someone will be along soon to help you out by sharing their experiences with it!
This technique closely resembles the theory of myofacial release employed by massage therapists, except the massage doesn't involve metal instruments. Even without the metal rods, when my massage therapist does MF release, I definitely feel bruised, and sometimes the bruises even become visible! The good news is, after a session, I have less pain and the relief lasts for up to a week!
If you can tolerate the actual manipulation, it may help in the long run. You'd have to try to find out, like every other form of treatment.... the individuality of SjS seems to make everything a gamble.
Thanks for your input, ladies.
I had my first treatment this morning. All I have to say is, I wasn't sure what petechiae looked like on me until today! The treatment itself was pretty uncomfortable, but luckily it doesn't take too long. I guess I will have to see how it feels next time with the brusing.
Here's a link that describes it:
