Title: Please accept my humble suggestion.
Post by: irish on February 09, 2010, 06:43:27 PM
I want to ask a favor from all of you. This may be just because I am on the far side of forty, but I am having a terrible time reading the posts.

WE are having a lot of new people and/or old people with new problems. Sometimes everything gets written in one looooong paragraph. I have to admit when I see that I just click out and go to a different thread. So sorry, but the print all runs together and I can't read it as it is too much strain and stress.

I would appreciate it if you folks could please make a new paragraph every so often. You don't even have to change the subject, just a new paragraph to separate the lines and make for easier reading. Thanks folks, Irish ;D

Great idea.  I also have difficulty with the "jumping icons".  They are so cute....yet incredibly distracting.  I have to hold a paper up to cover them up while I read.

I agree.  I agree.  If you post long, as i tend to, make each paragraph a couple or three lines and then some white space.   Or even better if it's real long, make 2 separate posts.  Lucy

Do you know I feel really guilty.  My eyes are rubbish and I haven't thought about paragraph size or text size.  Also some people use colours that are difficult to read (pale or with poor contrast against the white background).

I am going to take this on board and make sure my posts are bold and clear.  However (I know I'm thick), I can't work out how to change anything.  When I highlight the text and try to change size or colour, the instruction just comes up in brackets on the text.  So heeeeeelp!

Thanks for speaking up for the rest of use who are visually challenged.  I too skip over long posts that are not broken up into paragraphs.

Hi Lindaneall,

I'm guilty of the jumping critters, and I do apologize for that (I will try to limit those)!

Hi Irish,
I do try to do this and do completely agree and understand...I too find it difficult to read long messages which are not broken up into paragraphs.
So I'll keep this in mind each time I go off on a rant of somesort in the future.

As I newby, I'm happy to learn and receive such guidance on forum do's/don't/suggestions.

Hey Rostradamus , Just hit  Enter couple times on right side of keyboard and it will double space and create a new

paragraph. Suggestion from one that is learning to compensate... It works as just tried it on this message. Give it a try!!! :o

I agree.  Or just condense your post.  If I see a post thats too long I just skip over it.

Actually, I visited this thread a week ago and my first visit to this forum was hard to get used to because of the color scheme.  When you have poor vision, you need lots of contrast between colors.  It is a very pretty look with the peaches and blue and marbled color bands, but hard to clearly read for me.  And when someone posts a quote from another post, it is medium to dark purple, even harder to see.  But then consider I work for an agency that advocates for the Blind and vision impaired folks, so of course I would notice this right away.

I wish there were a way that the user control panel would allow you to adjust the basic color styles.  Maybe I have not found it yet if there is one.

One thing that the original post mentions is LONG paragraphs.  I agree that is a problem. At least the majority of folks are not using all caps here.

Part of my job is assistive technology trainer and I can put a plug in here for anyone who is listening in that those with any cognitive impairments (like, oh, I don't know, um....Sjogren's folks with brain fog or concentration issues? LOL) need these simple helps as well as those with vision issues.

So, if there is a way to make a change myself in how I view this forum, please let me know.  When worse comes to worse, I know I can copy a post to my Notepad on the PC and then change the size to a larger font and that helps me.

No ideas how to go about changing my user view to make the forum easier to read?

Hi beej  :)

Under the 'search box' there are a line of options. Second from the right is 'profile'. Click on it and within your profile there are options to change the way the page looks.

Also if your mouse has a wheel on it you can hold CTRL down and increase or decrease the font size by moving the wheel. If your mouse doesn't have a wheel you can hold down CTRL and press +  and the writing will get bigger.

Take care - Scottie  :)

Went to the profile and did not see a way to change the "look and layout" other than deciding the order of posts, which to show, date/time information, etc.  I guess I will have to increase the font size up to read posts here better.

I have a Mac, so no scrolling mouse, BUT I use Firefox for my browser and I can click Command + Plus sign to get the font larger.  That is a tip many folks don't know about.  It generally works with Internet Explorer too.  To go smaller, Command +Minus sign.  In a PC, use Control instead of Command.

Hi Beej  :)

When you go to the profile look over to the left hand side of the page. (Admittedly, the writing is small there) There are 3 boxes with headings and in the second one down there are optopns for changing look and layout. It took me a while to find them originally but they are there - or should be!

Take care - Scottie  :)

Thank goodness I tried again for the third time to find a way to change the "look and layout" and with the urging of members, yippee, I found it!  It is the sidebar link for preferences and it takes a bit to figure out which link to use.  When I got to a page that had "themes" on it, I saw default and others.  You have to "preview" the theme to see what it is.  I ended up with Babylon, which gives me a nice white background, black text, and some medium to light gray with backgrounds on frames and blue for borders.  This is FAR better than trying to deal with the soft peach and blue colors of the default layout and look.

Maybe a short tutorial on this would be good for an Admin to create for the sticky topics?

Thanks for your help here.
