Last Sunday, Church was cancelled due to snow weather and I was home alone as my husband was at the church recording his last message before he goes on a sabbatical (time away from pulpit and ministry)
ANYWAY
I was home alone and becoming very proud of how I had a great fire going on in our fire place. Thinking of how I would brag to my husband of how I got it going from a cold pile of logs to a wonderful fire ... all by my self. I had one Huge, I mean HUGE log that, I was thinking, If I could just hoist that big beauty upon my sweet fire it was gonna be my great achievement in my cozy fire place adventure.
Got it there. ::) flames roared smoke filled the room and I could hear a great roar up in my chimney. Ran to kitchen filled big pot with water, coughing thru the smoke, I threw this on the fire...lots more smoke. Ran for another pot and threw it again. Lots more smoke, but fire looked under control. I could hear the flue fire roaring loud. I leashed my pup Elroy grabbed my phones (house and cell) ran to the front yard OH MY smoke out there also.
Very much out of breath, I called 911. Fire trucks and all that goes down with this situation and I still did not call my poor husband. I kept thinking I don't want to interupt him. When I did. finally. I called and said babe ... I have fire trucks at the house and a flue fire in process. SORRY! :-[
Anyway, it is a week later and all is well. Ins Co. is pulling thru for us. Just small amount smoke smell and it is all gone now. Flue probably needs some work. At one point the fire men were thinking they needed to tear my living room ceiling down. But it all stayed in the flue.
Okay the stress of this took me a couple days recovery. I had extreme headache for a few days and fatigue. The adrenalin rush took my system flat down.
Two days of a clean up service and my house is sparkling cleaner than before. :)
Not so proud of my fire place management skills. :-\ Pride cometh before the fall. Yeah that might be true here.
Blessings kimbo
Dear Kim,
I am so glad you are alright. Did you get yourself checked out for the smoke you inhaled? I hope you did.
We have had a chimney fire and thank goodness my husband was home and knew what to do. He grabbed a stack of just washer/dried and folded jeans off the kitchen table, went up the antenna tower to the roof and stuffed the jeans down the chimney. Thereby snuffing out the fire. (jeans didn't make it though)
We had to have our chimney relined because the fire cracked the liner, but everything turned out okay.
I'm so glad you got out and took Elroy with you. Thank God, you were safe.
Take care dear, and don't be feeding the fire so much fuel next time. ;D
Hugs, Pooh
That is why we have a gas fireplace. Turns on, then turns off again. Very pretty. I'm too old for campfires.
Very glad to hear it was not worse, and that you, your husband, critters, and house made it through.
Genko
Pooh, They think we will reline our chimney. The fireman were pretty sure. Pooh did you have a lot of smoke in the house. I was feeling it and Elroy was hacking. But I feel fine now. Even right afterwards I did not feel anything that bothered me.
And Genko, I am thinking the gas fire place would be great. :)
I have NEVER started a fire, too afraid!
When we first moved into the house me, my father and a handy man were here checking things out throughout the house when we heard birds in the chimney, well my father being the man he was decided to "Smoke them out!" Well I'm not wanting to do this, don't want to hurt the po birds and just had a feeling this was not going to turn out to well.
My father, not one to take no for an answer demanded I break down moving boxes for the fire he told me to tear a piece off for the fire he had started, I tore off a small piece and hesitantly put it in the fire, but no! he was going for a much bigger fire! He grabbed that box and stuffed it in the fire when all of a sudden black smoke gushed out at us and quickly went throughout the house. We were in trouble!
The handy man and I were running opening windows while the alarm was blurring, but the smoke was out of control we could not see in front of us it was so thick, while my father sat calmly outside smoking a cig. and waiting on the fire dept. ::) ::)
The fire dept. came and put it out, but boy did they laugh at us when they found out how it got started, they were out in the streets slapping their knees laughing! My father had a special way of telling a story, plus, my brother is a lieutenant with fire dept. and they knew we belonged to him!
I am just so very glad I had not placed my furniture in the house yet!
Dearest Kimbo - what a shock this must have been! I'm relieved to hear that you weren't hurt, and that you recovered pretty quickly from the shock and adrenaline rush.
There must be easier ways to get the house an early spring-cleaning. And to meet fire fighters!
Thinking of you - Chickpea
Gerrr fire bad.
Chickpea, ;D small town all the firemen know me, and now even better.
Epson ;D
Kimbo - what some people won't do to get someone else to clean house for them!!! :o All kidding aside, Kimbo I am so thankful you were home at the time and that things got taken care of quickly by the fire department. No more BIG logs in the fireplace!!! In fact, leave the fireplace duties to your hubby!! ;D
I'm glad you are feeling better now that things have calmed down. What a way to start off the New Year!! :o
Take care my friend.
Hugs,
Bucky
Hey Bucky,
If you need any help at your house, I could lend your my skills. ;D
Hugs, kimbo
Awww Kimbo - you are too kind. Thanks for the offer, however, if I took you up on the offer I would be in serious trouble since I don't have a fireplace in my house!! :o I don't think the insurance company would take too kindly to burning the house down starting a fire in the middle of the living room floor!! I admit there have been times through the years I dreamed of how we would do things differently in our house if we had a chance to redo it . . . . I DO NOT want to lose my house to a fire to put our dreams into action. Thanks, but no thanks - I'll pass on your offer.
I prefer to ring in the New Year in a more calming way . . . not in a "blaze" of glory!! ;D
Hugs,
Bucky

Thank God you are ok, it could have been serious. Was serioius enough! I have always been afraid of a chimney fire. I use to burn the fireplace downstairs when the kids were young but now we use the gas fireplace upstairs. No more logs on the fire for me. Fake ones will do fine
Glad you are ok.
Be Carefull hugs

Kimbo,
Glad you were home and that you are ok! I have always been too afraid to have a fireplace in my house although I do love it when I have gone to others houses and they have them going!
Glad all turned out well, you and Elroy are safe, and your house is all cleaned up!
