Title: Black Friday anyone?
Post by: Bucky on November 20, 2009, 08:15:34 AM
Just wondering (which my hubby translates means "your just nosey" . . hmmmm  ::)) is anyone going to brave a week from today - better known as Black Friday??  Been there, done that once . . that was enough for me!!  I don't think you could convince me to EVEN try it again - I do not like crowds and Black Friday is definitely a "crowd" day.

Bucky - who is NOT participating in Black Friday . . . Bah Humbug  :D

Can you explain what Black Friday is?  Sorry - I have no clue - is it something to do with Christmas shopping  ???

Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving (this year November 27th) where the stores have all their BIG sales to kick off the Christmas holiday shopping.  They try and bring in the customers to take them (the store) from being in the red  to being in the black (going from being in the hole sale wise to making a profit).  The stores open really early - some at 5:00 A.M. and people line up hours (some times a day before) to be one of the first into the store.  They have special hours for "doorbuster" sales where you can get items at low, advertised prices.

Let me tell you from a person who has been to a Black Friday before . . . it is a MADHOUSE!!!   :o   :o   :o  Sadly enough, last year an employee of a store died as he was trampled by the crowd and people stepping on him to get in!!  Some people love to shop on Black Friday.  Not me . . . you won't find me out there!!

Bucky,
Not I!  I'll risk paying a little more instead.   Those of you who do venture out -- have fun!

Hate to break the trend but I go every year. It is a tradition my hubby and I have we get coffees and brave the crowds. We don't ever go for the tv or the things that cause people to hurt each but we do get some good deals for our kids. Last year was hard for me as I use a wheelchair for long distances but I just feel like I can't break the tradition, my illnesses have been a hard adjustment for me and my hubby.  So I am gonna keep up with the tradition. I know it may seem crazy.

Thanks for the explanation  ;D

In the UK there are often special sales on 1 January, with some amazing bargains.  People will queue outside the shop with a sleeping bag and thermos flask, in order to be first in, to get the bargain.  However, in recent times, there have been more sales on-going in almost all stores, to encourage us to spend money during this recession.

Personally, I don't go to these sales - I don't actually like shopping!   ::)    (See you knew I wasn't normal!)   ;D   xx

I used to love Black Fridays, well until all of this mess started.  Now a days, I'll just pay more too.  :)

Well I am working that day but we are supposed to close early at 2pm.  I don't mind working that day as you'd have to give me the stuff free to get me in at 5am!  Here is an idea - free coffee and donuts to the early shoppers! LOL  They need their strength.

People are just too crazy. I will have enough to deal with when we get the first snow/ice here as driver's are nutty driving before they get used to it.

Oh yes, I've done the "Black Friday" shopping too.  The last time I did this was when the "Furbies" were all the rage.  While standing in line for a "rain check" (the shipment didn't make it in time) a couple of "ladies" got into a fist fight over letting a friend in line with them.  The police were called, the "ladies" were arrested and the line really thinned out.  I got my "rain check" and finished what shopping I had to do and went home.  ::)

NEVER, NEVER, EVER AGAIN!!

We are drawing names at Thanksgiving and only spending $20 on that person.  It has to be something funny, nothing serious.  Last year we laughed all the time the gifts were opened.   :D :D :D

I love the holidays, but at this late stage of my life, I enjoy shopping, less and less.  If I can't pick up the phone or order it over the internet, FORGET IT.

Happy Holidays everyone and be safe.

Hugs, Pooh

I used to always go if I was off and for a few years went before work....but now there is not anything I must get so if we go it's not as early and more just for the spirit and atmosphere. We will be at my Mom and Dad's so will have to go by them and pack stuff in car for trip home so nothing really big.  They all sleep in so we go just to have tea/coffee and watch .....
Just finished making stuffing regular and rice(I am gluten free, so make that one for me...) I make it and bring, reheat for thanksgiving,Then make a batch of snickerdoodles .....should get up and do another.....notice I am not jumping....I am beat!Might just quit.... ???
I seem to have drifted off the black friday theme sorry!

I haven't seen any of the ads yet for Black Friday, but I did see on the TV that Old Navy is opening at 3:00 a.m.!!!   :o

I wouldn't be surprised before long that the sales don't start at 12:01 a.m. Black Friday!!   ::)

Good luck Proudmom . . . you're braver than me!!  Hope you find lots of goodies.  I hope you post back here and let us know how it went.

I've heard of 'Black Friday' but never experienced it.  Here in the UK shops start their sales earlier each year so now they start before Christmas rather than afterwards.  It still seems odd to get bargains for presents!

Proudmom - I'm also a wheelchair user and my advice would be to use it to your advantage in the crowds.  Just sail by calling out apologies as you speed towards the bargains you want.  People generally feel guilty shouting at people in wheelchairs even as they run for safety as we crash through the crowds!

I hope you all have a happy Thanksgiving and a relaxed 'Black Friday' - Chickpea

Chickapea,

That will get you killed in most places on Black Friday, beat up or to say the least cursed out! As someone said people are too crazy now a days to be out there, especially when they are geared up to be the first ones. If I go it will be much later cuz ain't nothing in those stores worth me fighting over or getting hurt for. NOTHING!

Proudmom be careful out there! My sister was in a wheelchair one year and accidently bumped into one young "lady" and was threathen to have some stuff beaten out of her and was told don't think because you're in that chair you won't get your a!!! kicked. Those young ones will HURT you out there, they especially feel the malls belong to them anyway.

I will be careful I know the wheelchair doesn't matter when people go crazy. When I was preggo with my son, my hubby and I were at Target on black friday and I had to go to the bathroom no one would let me get to the bathroom my hubby got a manager and she cleared the line for me to get thru to the bathroom everyone thought I was trying to cut the line. I know how crazy people get. This year I am just going to one store and I don't have to have anything and if it seems to crowded or I don't think it will be safe we will just go out for breakfast. I just have stopped so many things I used to do before becoming ill sometimes I feel I have to keep up with old ways to still feel like myself.

Have a great thanksgiving everyone, Proudmom

I did the "Black Friday" shopping thing once -- about three years ago -- with my best friend.  It was OK, but what I had on my list wasn't in any of the sales and I had to get up at about 4:00 am.  Still, my friend and I made it fun even though neither of us were morning people.  My friend passed away suddenly this past Spring (a few months before my SjS diagnosis) so I'll be especially thinking of her and missing her this holiday season.  Sorry, I don't mean to be a downer...I'm blessed with the memories she left me with.   :)

Well I made it back home in one piece. The crazy people of walmart started the trip out rough but we then went to toys r us which was really calm with no waiting, they told us all the nuts were there at 12 am and they had to call the fire department. Then we went to Kmart and that was busy but not crazy. The whole trip has probably put me down for a day or so but we got alot of shopping done, some good deals, and the most important thing is my hubby smiled the whole time and kept saying how great it was that we can still do our annual black friday shopping together.

Hope everyone had a great holiday. Proudmom  :)

Proudmom -   good to hear that you and hubby had a good time sharing your Black Friday tradition shopping together.  :)   Hope you are taking it easy today.   ;)

((Blue Kat)) -  sorry to hear about your friend.  I hope it brings a smile to your heart to remember the time you DID both get up early and join the crowd on Black Friday.   Thank goodness for our memories of good times.

Proudmom, I am so glad you guys had a great time and stored up memories. In my area there was a woman trampled in Toys R Us, she had her knee broken, but survived.

I thought about going later in the day, but decided against it, I hate crowds.
