Title: Check your receipts / watch while checking out
Post by: Bucky on November 13, 2009, 11:30:00 AM
Hello you fine people.   ;D

Just wanted to send out a little reminder for everyone to be aware of what you are paying for things at the store.  In this day and age any money that stays in OUR pocket is to our advantage.  On two occasions within the last week, at two different stores, I have been overcharged for items.  How many times do you just put your items on the belt, the cashier rings them up, you pay, put the receipt in your purse or pocket and walk out the door?  I have learned to step to the side before walking out the door and check my receipt before leaving.

At our grocery store, if there is a dispute between the price that rang up and the price posted on the shelf and you bring it to their attention (after the transaction), they refund your money and you get the item FREE.  Thank you Kroger's for the free tub of pulled pork.   ;D

Today, at the deli of another store, they were going to charge me $1.50 more per pound than what was posted.  I was watching as he punched in the per pound dollar amount before printing out the receipt.  Oh no you don't!!   :D  The guy laughed and said "oh, I did the same thing earlier to someone else".

I've been in stores where they get a little too scan happy and double scan items that should have only been scanned once.

With the holiday spending frenzy already under way (remember, don't get caught up in all the hullabaloo . . it's easy to do) - just keep an eye out as your items are rung up and check your receipts before leaving the store (or at least before leaving the parking lot) so you can turn around and get your money back right then and there.

Also make sure when using your Debit/Credit card that there isn't an amount "cash back" on the bottom of your tape.

We just had a check out girl arrested for putting "cash back" amounts on the end of people's orders and pocketing the cash.  She would wait until a friend was in line and then if the person in front of her friend used her card, she would do this, leave the money in the register.  Then her friend would check out and pay in cash.  The girl at the register would give her friend her change, plus the money she pocketed with the "cash back" scheme.

Fortunately, they tried this once to often and they were both caught.

SO BEWARE!!  especially now, as Bucky has reminded you.  The Holiday rush is on and it will be so easy to get scammed.  Either by design or accident.

CHECK THOSE RECEIPTS!!!

I am one of the few people I know that watches the price items get rung up on the cash register.  We also have a grocery store too that if this item rings up wrong - you get one of the item free.  Good Idea!

You should always watch your other stuff too - like credit card statements, bank statements and medical bills. I once had quit a hefty medical bill from a dr I never heard of in another state - insurance had assigned it to the wrong person.   Don't be hesitant to call the fraud line of these companies who appreciate you calling.

Don't let yourself get phished either. We are all too much of giving out information if someone asks for it. We had a store here that had a discount card - on the form to fill out it asked me what bank I used.  I wrote none of your business and got the card.  I work with pension info so we are very well trained for confidentiality, etc.  but most people are way to open to giving out information they should not.

Same here, got to watch carefully, sad, isn't it?  Sometimes it just makes you want to cry.

One the good side, there is one grocery store that advertises that they'll give you the item if the price is wrung up wrong; yep, they do honor it (and without an argument either).

I agree - check your credit card statement very carefully. After our holiday in Cyprus in the autumn, I found I'd been billed for nearly 800 pounds sterling for air tickets for someone else. I got the charges refunded, as they pushed my bill too high to miss. However, smaller amounts could have got through.

Be careful!

Yup...I agree...watch those receipts! I checked mine after I left the store the other day while I was sitting waiting in the car and noticed I was not charged the sale price of an item I bought...it was only about 3 dollars plus tax...but at this time of year 3 dollars is a lot to me and its my 3 dollars not the stores!  :D I was still near the store so I went back and they refunded my money to me!

If that happens a few times..those few dollars can really add up quickly!

My husband and I went to a restaurant last month and this young waiter was joking about being a theft of all things, how about when it came time to pay he took my card and brought me back a receipt to sign for $69.00 when our ticket stated only 30 something! I called him on it, he was embarrassed because he had joked, ill joked and now here he was looking like a theft! He took it back and reran it.

I told him to let that be a lesson to him.

I did double check my bank statement to be sure he had in fact corrected it and not billed me twice. I kept my receipt, both of them in case I had to fight it!
