I'm back!
« on: June 26, 2009, 08:38:35 AM »
Hi  :)

Welcome to any newbies who have joined over the past week!  :)  I've been reading through back posts but there were five pages of them so I haven't been as thorough as I should've been - and could easily miss someone!

The weather was kind when I was away although there was a bit too much sun but I managed with long sleeves and a big hat and plenty of sunblock.

NO WETSUIT Pooh!  I did spend an afternoon in a canoe though, which was a whole new experience. I've only ever been in a kayak before.

One night we were meant to camp. The kids had built bivouacs and were meant to sleep in them. As dusk approached - the midges descended or ascended - I'm not sure which and we were being eaten alive and managed to persuade the outdoor education folk to take us back to 'civilisation' (bunk beds in a building) Their bus wasn't big enough for us all so another worker plus two girls and me had to wait in the woods till they dropped the others off and came back. The midges kept biting and the mist got really wet too so we were pretty uncomfortable! We messed around making animal noises and as we had a camcorder we tried to make our own version of the Blair Witch Project.

1 lad got sent home the morning after I arrived for setting fire to his aerosol deoderant and singeing another kid's hair. Two got sent home the following day for bullying, namecalling and urinating in another kids' shoes. (His only pair) Youth workers are taking him shopping for a new pair and giving the receiot to the parent(s)/carer(s) of the perpetraters.

2 girls actively WANTED to be sent home and were pains in the butt all week but not actually dangerous. The others all seemed to have a good time.

Can't say I'm sorry to be home though! I will be sleeping in over the weekend.

My FIL is holding his own and I think will be getting out of hosptal on Monday. Hubby is going up to look after him as his sister is due an op next week and the hospital won't let FIL out unless there is help on hand at home. Hubby is taking the car so I'm not looking forward to bussing it to work. Don't mind the bus but I don't like the walk to and from the bus stop. Not sure how long this will go on for.

Got good news yesterday though. My youngest got her marks from her last year at Uni and is graduating in July with a First Class Degree. It's a nice feeling to know that all 4 kids have been through Uni. Makes me feel I must have done something right even although I felt pretty useless quite often when they were little cos I didn't seem to have the energy a lot of the other mothers had and they were brought up in a really untidy house. I did talk to them a lot though. (and listened)

All 4 are working too and in this financial climate that is lucky too. Youngest has had a part time job at Uni for the last 2 years and they have offered her a 3 year position now that she has her degree. Something to do with project managing funds for university departments.

Anyway - I'm back. I've missed you all! No radio, TV, computer or news for 5 whole days! No phone reception either.

Take care - Scottie  :)

Welcome back Scottie.  Glad to hear you survived the out back living. :D  I'm a little disappointed you didn't have to use a wet suit though.  I must confess I loved your last endeavor with one.  :D :D

Take care dear friend and rest up, also very happy to hear your FIL is being released from hospital.  I hope your hubby doesn't have to stay away to long.

Congratualtions on getting the 4th through university.  And they all have jobs, that's fantastic.  Good job Mum!

Hugs, Pooh

Welcome home Scottie!!  Bet you are happy to be in your own home with your own bed.   ;D

Well, you survived your five days . . . whew.  I'm sure there was never a dull moment!

That must be rough sharing one car with your hubby.

Glad to hear your FIL is doing better and will be released Monday.

Congrats to youngest daughter on graduating University plus being offered a job at University.  My son is only in 8th grade, I've got a ways to go yet.

Ahhhh, put your feet up and relax this weekend.  Enjoy!!

We missed you . . . . .

Hi Scottie

Welcome back. I missed you!

Those lads sound like a real handful. I wonder what their parents will say when billed for the shoes. Good for you, keeping the girls there. It probably did them the world of good. I'm itching now thinking of the midges :)

I'm delighted to hear your FIL is heading home. that must be a huge relief for you. Good luck on the bus.

You must be so proud of No 4 (as well as the others, of course). A first is a huge achievement, particularly if she has been working part time for two years as well. Congratulations to her and her parents.

You need to put yourself first this weekend, so the orders are: rest and relax and rewind.

Hugs
Kathyx

Lol!  Thankfully - I didn't capsize. The lad in the canoe with me didn't want to get wet either. Yay! (It wouldn't have done my hearing aid a power of good!)

I got home and hubby has bogged off up north to spend time with his father who is due out of hospital soon. He's taken the car, which I'm miffed about because his Dad has one up there and I'm now without a car for the forseeable future. Hubby says he'll only be a week but that depends on when his Dad is actually discharged - and it hasn't happened yet.

Getting to work and back with no car is going to be tiresome.

Got a good nights sleep last night though. NO snoring!!!!    :D

Take care - Scottie  :)

Hi Scottie

Sorry to join the congratulations late but I've been away from my computer for a week too.

I loved your description of the great outdoors, and the behaviour of 'your' young people.  They sound a little like the groups my husband used to take on camping holidays when he was a student.  They were nominated by social workers in Toxteth, Liverpool and had a variety of 'challenging' backgrounds.  Two 8 year olds were expert TADAs (that's 'taking and driving away' to you and me).  Apparently one knelt on the car seat and steered the car, while the other knelt down and operated the pedals.

Your daughter got a First! Wow! Plus a job means double 'wow'.  I can completely understand that you feel you've completed a stage of motherhood.  Give me a year or so and I'll join you.  My eldest son has just got his PhD - brilliant viva and no corrections - and was invited to apply for three jobs.  First one they told him he was over-qualified, ditto second, and third that he was under-qualified.  Duh!  Thankfully he's got a three year (well funded) research job so he can get his first book(s) written.

I hope your FIL soon feels better.  Maybe you could tell your husband that it's a lot cheaper to take taxis than to buy a second car - so that's what you'll be doing until he returns with your car.

Enjoy peaceful evenings and all the bed to yourself!

Take care - Chickpea

Hey Scottie....I was thinking the same thing as Bucky...I hope that wasn't her on the overturned canoe...glad it wasnt!!  :D

But by taking a second look...I can take a well educated guess that you are the one with the floppy blue hat on to keep the sun off of your face and neck....am I right??  ???

Hey Scottie,

I am catching up, as I have been away also.

So fun to read about your adventures.

Thanks for the pics also.

I hope you got rested up, and that your husband brings that car back soon.
