Why do things come at once?
« on: June 21, 2009, 05:34:27 PM »
Hi  :)

As I've already posted I'm going away tomorrow.

Tonight we got a phone call from the far north. (Where hubby's family live) Hubby's Dad has been taken into hospital. He collapsed. He's a month short of being 85 years old.

From another phone call later we've learned that he has got pneumonia and that he collapsed because his temperature was over 40C.(104F)

He was however sitting up in his hospital bed laughing and joking with visitors and a doctor had said he was the 'healthiest' person he'd ever seen with pneumonia.  Obviously he's not out of the woods yet though.

Now I feel really guilty about going away. Hubby and I share a car. Hubby doesn't want to head north yet because if he suddenly turned up - his Dad would get really worried.  It's the thought - he may HAVE to go up.  I guess as long as I keep my cell phone charged it'll be OK. I can head home if necessary.

My daughter's comment on my trip away was "Well - at least canoes don't have ski lifts"  (I managed to dislocate my elbow on one during a previous residential)

Take care - Scottie  :)

(((Scottie))),

Sorry to hear your FIL in in the hospital w/pneumonia.  I know from experience how hard it is to be a distance away from a parent who is sick.

If you are needed you can always get away from residential.  Keeping positive thoughts that everything will be fine.

Keeping your family in my thoughts and prayers for your FIL's speedy recovery.

Scottie, I'm so sorry to hear about your FIL.  I will keep him and your family in my thoughts and prayers.

If he's sitting up kidding and laughing, he must be a tough ole bird. :D  I hope his outlook on life pulls him through this bout of pneumonia.

I'm sure you will be on pins and needles the whole time you are away, but with cell phones and computers, you will be in touch and able to return quickly if needed.

Take care and try to enjoy yourself,

Hugs, Pooh

Hi Scottie,

Wow, your father-in-law sounds like an incredable individual!  Wow, up and cheery already?  That's amazing!  Please do give him my best and I hope that he feels better soon!

And Lynnmarie's right, cellphone's are a great invention!

Take care and hang in there -

Hi Scottie

Everything always happens at the same time doesn't it? I think the others are right, he does sound a tough old bird, but you don't want to freak him out by suddenly appearing at his bedside.

Let's hope this is just a short infection.

Hugs

Gosh sorry to hear about the illess in the family!  Pneumonia is a tricky thing. Most of us really don't recognize it when we have it. AND "sorry guys" but guys are really stubborn about going to the dr and admitting a weakness like feeling ill.

I had the walking pneumonia in 03 right this time of year. I just had a kinda wet cough over the weekend and was more tired than usual. I was feeling better on the Monday and since I had a physical Thursday I just waited. My dr told me I had it and I thought he was nuts as I thought you only got that in the winter time not in July with 90 degree heat!  :o But you can get it anytime so I learned something new.  Dr let me work but I had to cancel volunteering for my charity group for the 4th of July festivities which really upset me but dr said - no way.  I was put on a strong antibiotic and had an xray before and after too. Dr said only way you could really tell with pneumonia is to listen to a person's lungs.

Well if hubby's dad is well enough to joke and give the nurses heck  ;) I'd say he is on the road to recovery. I honestly I think the attitude you have affects your recovery to a certain extent. How about sending him one of those get well cards with the music inside or you can record.  I got a cousin of mine on his 80th birthday a birthday card with the music "Born to be Wild". LOL

 :D

Hubby's coming home tomorrow. His Dad is driving him nuts. He got out of the hospital on Monday. personally I don't think hubby should come home till next weekend but it's not up to me. He recons his sisters will hold the fort until we both go up at the end of term. His Dad doesn't want him to leave. Hubby is worried about me with no car - but I'm managing. It'll be nice to have it back but I can manage without it.
Hubby and his sisters have been trying to persuade their Dad to get one of those things that you press a button and it rings about 3 phone numbers. You wear it round your neck - ot could stick it in a pocket. FIL won't hear of it. Hubby was getting really irate with him and was trying to explain it was for his sister's peace of mind - NOT just for FIL.  (I just hope he remembers that conversation if our kids ever advise him to do the same thing. I honestly think he'd poo poo it just like his Dad!!)
He says his Dad keeps banging on about valueing his independence so hubby wants to come home and let him get on with it. Neither of them are patient people!!
All in all FIL has made a remarkable recovery though. The pneumonia was in the same lung as he had TB in once - in the days before an NHS or antibiotics. He's a survivor!

Take care - Scottie  :)

Scottie - good news on both situations, FIL home and hubby coming home.   :D

My Mom had one of those necklace alarms.  My brother was getting a bit teed off as Mom would press it, the service would call him, he'd take off from his job, come to the house and find Mom wanted to change chairs!  Not what the necklace is for.  It did give Mom peace of mind that IF she truly did need it, someone would be there and she wouldn't have to wait for Dad to come in from a long day of work to find that Mom had fallen or something.

Yeah, your hubby will have to remember this when he gets older and your kids want to do the same to Dad.   ;D

Take care,
Bucky

So that we can have times when things are not so upsetting! If you notice closely we have more of these than we do the problematic ones, they just take more focus to see and appreciate! :) :) ???

Sorry about your father in law, I hope all goes well for him and that you enjoy your time away!

Peace & Be Blessed!
