2 new things in one day.
« on: June 01, 2009, 05:48:24 PM »
Hi - I got my hearing aid replaced today. It's quite a shock to the system. I had no idea how much hearing I'd lost. My keyboard sounds really loud - and so does my husband!!   I think I'll need it on its lowest volume to contend with the kids at work!

So there was work - then a hearing test and hearing aid fitting and then hubby and I went to pick up a new car. Well - its not brand new - but its only last years and has only done 6000 miles - so it feels new. Never had a nearly new car before. Had a drive around in it and went for a meal - so that was nice too.

Take care - Scottie  :)

Hi Scottie,

Congrats all around!  Sorry to hear that hubby is a bit "loud"!  I'm sure you'll figure out how to dial him "down" a bit soon! ;) :D

And good luck with the "newer" car for you!  I sure hope it works out for you!

Take care -

Wow Scottie...good day all around for you!

Congrats on the new car and so glad you got your hearing aid today as well......it will probably take some getting used to, but at least like you said..you can always turn it down if people are sounding extra loud! ;)

Great Day for you Scottie,

I think thats funny what sounds loud to you. And I am glad you can tone it down at your convenience.  ;D

I am like you, we always drive used cars.  I would be very excited about one as new as you received today.  Congratulations and happy driving.  What kind did you get.

I stayed with a friend at the hospital during a recent surgery , where they surgically installed  a thing behind her ear, on th left side. It will take 3 months before this thing will integrate into her skull bone behind her ear. It is called a Baja system hearing aid. She has had almost no hearing for so many years, she reads lips very well and hearing aids has helped. But they say this new system will give her normal hearing. It will be 3 months before we see the results. It will snap into place in the surgical thing they installed.

Happy new car and hearing aid day,  kimbo

To cool Scottie.  So glad you are hearing well again.  I'm sure you'll get the hang of that new one real soon.

Congratulations on the "almost new" car. ;D  It's new for you no matter how many miles it has on it. Enjoy!! :D

Congrats,

yeay a new car what colour is it?

Maybe your hubby a switch you can turn down.  My hubby has a slight hearing impairment.  and when he calls home to Italy the whole family jokes that he doesn't really need a phone he could just stand at the front door and they would be able to hear him.   :D

Hi Scottie

Isn't technology wonderful? I bet you are so pleased to have your hearing back ... and you are lucky in being able to turn your hubby down :) Mine is getting a little hard of hearing, but refuses point blank to see a doctor. I'm sure it would make his life easier, but no way is he going. About 10 years ago we had the same problem with his vision. I practically dragged him for an eye test, and yes, he needed glasses. In fact he became a voracious reader once he could see. It doesn't seem to cut any ice getting him a hearing test though ::)

Congrats on the new car too. Enjoy!

Hi Scottie
I'm on my fourth set of hearing aids.  Each time, for a few days, the world seems as though it's too loud to live in.  The kitchen is so noisy I need to turn them way down.  It seems to be that the best time of the day is at night when I turn them off before bed - blessed peace and quiet!  On the up side though, I can actually hear people talking on the phone!  My new ones have directional mics that "deaden" the noise around me, so I can concentrate on conversations.  Over the years I have had a problem with ear infections caused by sweat "wicking" it's way behind the hearing aids.  Other than that, they are great.

My better half keeps telling me that he is going to get me one,  (A hearing aid)

But I blame him, and tell him that if he opened his mouth more instead of muttering away,

Congrats on the hearing aids and the new car, Scottie. I'm glad you posted about your h. aids because so many people have trouble adjusting to them and won't wear theirs.  My sister got hearing aids years ago as she has lost 80% of hearing in one ear and some in the other.  She can't wear them.  Her husband got a first pair about a year ago and I have not seen him wear them.

My hubby needs them and has for years.   We both agree that he wouldn't wear them and we manage through "yelling" back at one another.  I do get tired of repeating myself.  Also is annoying to him.  If I thought there was a 1 in 4 chance he would wear them, we'd get it done.  He also likes to work in his woodshop with dust and sawdust.  Add working to the garden and yard, plus he's a great "sweater."  It's just now getting warm and he's sweating like an old bear after working outside.

I have a friend (female) who wears two hearing aids.  In fact I  knew her for years and I didn't realize she wore aids.  She wears her hair short and you can see them, she doesn't try to cover them up.  She has to wear them to be able to work and I guess that's the determining factor whether one adjusts or not.  Like wearing glasses.....if you can get away without them, then you will.  If you can't see, you will adjust to wearing them.  May they last you for a long time.  Lucy

Hi Lucy  :)

I just wish I'd had a hearing aid when I was at school! My hearing in one ear has been bad all my life. Learning languages was really hard. I had to see things written down. One ear works pretty well. It doesn't work quite as well as it used to - but it's still not bad. The other ear only had about 10% hearing and now, apparently, it only has 5%.

My world was never stereo. Stereo was lost on me. Directional hearing was something I just didn't have.

When I got to 50 I went to the doctor and threw a tantrum. I said I really really wanted directional hearing because I wanted to be able to work out where the kids I work were, were in relationship to me. (One kept threatening to set my hair alight) It was a job I came to late, after I'd brought up my family.

Since then I've had three hearing aids. (One ear only) The first wasn't digital. The second two have been. The new one is because I needed something more powerful after my hearing had dropped again. The aid doesn't come with a proper volume control like the first one did but it works much more like normal hearing instead of amplifying everything. Stereo is good!

I don't understand people who don't want to hear or who don't want to see. (Lots of people put off having glasses for a riduiculous amount of time) You can miss soooo much.

Actually - my aid is an aid in more ways than one. The kids at work know I have a hearing aid but have no idea how much hearing I actually have. I can threaten to switch them off - and also they all think I can lip read. (Faces help - but I can't lip read)  It sometimes keeps what they say in check!   :)

deaf ears do have theiir advantages though. I can shut a noisy world out at night just by sleeping on the 'good' ear.

Take care - Scottie  :)

Hi Scottie,

Ah, hearing aids, something I'm not looking forward too.  Is there a particular brand/type that you prefer to the others?

I hate to ask, but my hearing is getting to the point where I'm having problems distinguishing voices (conversations), and the tinnitus is not helping matters!

Hi Patze  :)

I haven't actually tried different brands. The good old NHS has come to my rescue again. I get my hearing tests, my hearing aid and my batteries free on the NHS - so I take what I'm given. I still have the freedom to shop around and purchase a different brand if that's what I want to do - but I'm happy with what I've got.

Take care - Scottie  :)
