WOW..I need to win the lottery!
« on: May 09, 2008, 07:21:04 PM »
As you know I am recently engaged to a wonderful man... I already found the perfect dress when my mom and I went to look "just to get ideas."  I started calling places to get prices and WOW! I never knew it would cost this much!!!! $50 a person...Geeze...thats crazy to me.. the way im looking at it is thats its going to be $7000 JUST TO EAT!  I dont even like to pay $20 for a plate when we go out for dinner!  :)
So i started calling halls to rent and having it catered..I think it will be just as nice! But we have time to figure it out and im sure no matter what we decide..it wil be a perfect day!

Or..mom and dad..get the back yard ready....here we come...reception at your house!  :D

SO if anyone has an extra hundred dollars or so just laying around that you dont know what to do with ...feel free to send it this way! Thanks in advance...  ;D

I'm sure your day will be WONDERFUL no matter how much money you spend.  I for one would be thrilled if my daughter wanted to have the reception in my yard.  I'm great at organizing those sorts of things.  I amaze myself! ;D ;D

Have fun with the planning.  What does soon to be hubby want?  You both will have a great day i'm sure.  Are you keeping that new ring nice and shiny?? ;)

And the fun begins! Right Joi?

A catered wedding on a practical budget can still be a wonderful, elegant, fancy affair...and no matter how the reception is handled , it will be memorable!

I was involved in catering for years, and saw everything from formal church weddings with banquet service reception meals, to a wedding on a hilltop in a tent,  and a reception in the back yard catered by family and friends for buffet service...all were lovely. You have so many options now that the strict "by the book etiquette of weddings" has opened up to allow so many more personal touches. Even the changes in cake styles are remarkable...from thousands of dollars for the likes of a Duff Goldman cake (and I adore his work!) to a pyramid of cupcakes...anything goes!

I really wish I could send a little wedding present, but I'm afraid my best wishes will have to do  ;D

Joi,
Have you considered a mid-day wedding that would not require a sitdown dinner?   It could still be beautiful, and you'd be just as married!   Best wishes!   Lots of cybercash is headed your way!

Joi,

Congrats!!!

Are there any colleges in your area that teach culinary skills?  When my daughter got married, we contacted an area technical college that taught culinary and asked if there was any way we could get a last year student to cater a wedding.  They were very excited we asked and agreed to do so.  The chef said that it was a great way for the students to get practice out in the real world.  She recommended a couple students and we got a fantastic price  and had fantastic food served buffet style.  We only needed to feed 100 people and they charged $800 (this was 8 yrs ago), so I'm sure prices have probably gone up, but it might be worth investigating.  It was the least expensive price we could find and it was also great to help the students out.

The wedding cakes were made by students also, and they were exactly like the pictures my daughter showed them.  We were only charged $125 total, that included both the wedding cake and the groom's cake.

The wedding was a formal church wedding, but the reception was much more casual.  The guest remarked on how good the food was and how they enjoyed the casualness of the evening.  Keep your wedding beautiful, but also simple.   From our experience this allowed both my daughter and her husband, plus our family and friends to all be much more relaxed and able to throughly enjoy the wedding and reception.

Best Wishes,

Sue

Joi, I don't know about any of the other gals on this site but I enjoy the less formal and more personal weddings. People are going into debt big time these days for the weddings and it just bankrupts them before they have even walked down the aisle. The area one lives in also dictates how much things will cost. We live in one of the areas where things are not as spendy.

One of the neighbor gals got married a few years ago and she wore a long print dress that was very pretty. Something one could wear over and over. The groom wore just an average suit. The bride escorted her family and guests in and seated them in the church and the groom did likewise. The attendants wore long dresses that you could wear again of similar styles. The meal was simple and held in the church basement and catered by one of the outfits in town. Not elaborate at all, and sensible. I bet it still cost them a lot of money.

I always think that a wedding in a backyard or a county park etc with a hog roast would be the neatest thing. Whatever you decide you will enjoy. Irish ;D

Irish~~~I was married out doors on a beautiful summer day.  Everyone brought a dish for the buffet and what a feast.  The children ran around and played while the adults~~did like wise!!

Such a personal choice for everyone. My nieces wedding was so touching~~just the two of them and the minister,  who was her father. My daughter and I were sitting right by the harp in the front..that was the only music..it was just beautiful....colors of white and a very pale sea green.  AND I FORGOT THE TISSUES !!

I always dreamed of a big wedding, and still do, but ours was very small. My husband and I basically dressed in our best clothes, and we got married in a justice of the peaces back yard. We had a few family members there, and it was very small. At the time we did not have money for a wedding. Some day I plan to have a "mock" wedding so I can go all out. I still have dreams of wearing the white dress, and having a reception.
