Methotrexate and Covid-19 Booster
« on: September 01, 2021, 05:24:19 AM »

I just started weekly injections of Methotrexate.  I wonder if that affects whether or not I should have the Covid-19 Booster?

Our Senior Living Community will offer both the flu shot and the Covid-19
Booster this month.

Any thoughts?   I will ask my Immunologist.  She doesn't know I've started Methotrexate, since my Rheumatologist is the one who is taking care of that.

Sooo many doctors, so many complications.

This morning I'm having my 7th or 8th corneal injection for Macular Degeneration, and this afternoon I'm having my dental implant completed.

That is certainly a good question Caroline. I will be interested to see what your immunologist says....Im  trying to sort that out in my head and it is confusing. Sounds like you have a busy day. So many things to do when there are so many doctors. I am in the midst of getting new specialists after my move.

Have my new family doctor and have been there a few times. He is good and the PA-C I have is really smart so I appreciate that. She listens to me and she gets it. I found a new GI doc who is a keeper but he is an hour away across the cities and big highways and all kind of construction. I will have to find one closer. It is a bigger clinic so will be able to find one closer.

I have a new neurologist and she is also psychiatrist which is interesting. She knew what was going on and did a whole lot of testing so that is good. A new doctor is sometimes a blessing cause we get in a rut sometimes with years and years with our regular ones. My ENT of 25 years is so much closer to me now so that is easier. I am hoping to cut out some of the specialists...One can always hope.lol

I hope that you have good luck with the methotrexate and find that it helps sooner rather than later. Take care. meirisih

Dear Irish,

You are a real trooper.  Moving, new doctors, and an open mind...all take courage and real determination!

Re Methotrexate.  I had my first injection Tuesday night, and this morning I felt better than I have for ages.  My Polymyalgia Rheumatica is worst in the morning...and today it was just a faint shadow of itself.

So I am very optimistic.  I cut back half a mg Medrol today, to see what tomorrow brings.  And next Tuesday, I double the dose of Methotrexate!

I wish I'd been offered Methotrexate sooner.

Of course, I may have difficult side effects eventually.  One day at a time, right?

Carolina,

I have a friend who may be taking methotrexate for RA.

How often do you have to get the injections?

Awesome .. thanks!

Could you hold off on that CV thing until October? Waiting may pay off.

I am thinking that it might be wise to not rush into dropping your steroid dose too much until you get your blood level of Methotrexate built up. I would think a couple more weeks of Metho would help. The reason I say this is because you could have some unusual effects from the Methotrexate and when we taper our steroids it sort of can cause symptoms to change and then we don't know which drug to blame it on. Rule of thumb in medicine to try to keep changes to one at a time to prevent distortion and confusion.

Now, if I am wrong and you know different just ignore me. I just don't want you to suffer anymore than you have to. I totally get it when you feel so much better compared to all these years of suffering and want to kick some of the steroid off your list. I am praying that this "goodness" continues for you. Take care. meirish

Oh dear, Irish,

You are so right!  I dropped my Medrol by 1 mg yesterday morning (7 to 6) and by afternoon I was exhausted and in total body myalgia, could barely struggle along with my walker!

When I had been trying to go below 4 mg Medro, failed miserably and I had to go back to where I had NO PRM symptoms (7.5 mg), which is why my Rheumatologist began me on Methotrexate.

I was so excited not to have the PRM symptoms after I began Methotrexate that I eagerly began a rapid taper of the Medrol.  Alas, I felt terrible and thought the Methotrexate was failing me, until I realized that I was tapering the Medrol far too fast.

So this morning I went up to 7.5 and will begin a very slow taper.

I'm pretty sure the Methotrexate is working as it should, and I just 'confounded' everything with a too rapid taper of Medrol.

I just want OFF Medrol so badly.

Live and learn....or too soon old, too late smart!

Elaine

PS I just noticed that my oral lichen planus is hurting again!  That pain had stopped when I started Methotrexate, but before I began my rapid taper of Medrol).

So I hope the OLP pain (not terrible) will subside at the higher dose of Medrol, before I begin my very careful taper.

for those of you who wonder what Oral Lichen Planus is, the following link from the Mayo may help.

Elaine,

Boy do you ever have a lot going on!  Good luck with all of your ?procedures?.  I think it would be especially good for you to get your flu shot and your COVID19 booster.  But what I think doesn?t really matter, but please share with us what your good physicians think.  🤔.

I hope the Methotrexate continues to work out for you.  I had a friend with RA that swore she was put into her first real remission with Methotrexate.

Keep us posted as you are so good at sharing.
