If one more person tells me...
« on: July 20, 2011, 11:22:24 PM »
If one more person tells me, i'm going to run screaming naked down the street.that will be punishment for everyone!
lets see the list,shall we?

"you should just try to get more rest, you'll feel better"
"you let everything bother you. you just need to learn how to relax"
"you probably arent eating right.you might be eating too much carbs"
"you might feel better if you just didnt focus on it all the time"
"you should switch to all organic foods. the preservatives and chemicals are what is making u sick"
"have you tried taking (insert vitamin or herbal supplement here) because i had
the same problem(my favorite right there) and i feel fine now."
"you arent trying hard enough"
"it sounds to me like a food allergy.you need to go to an allergist."
"you need to go to a homeopath"
"you need to go to yoga classes"
"have you tried (insert pissy over the counter product for pain)?it's all i ever need to take."
"you should try meditation instead of all those pills"

and the list goes on and on. while some mean well, and some suggestions arent really that
crazy or bad, they just don't see the whole picture.theres no ONE thing that fixes this.

I'm sure i forgot a few, so please...add some of your favorites.I need a laugh right now.lol

Definately hear those ...
AND these ...

"but you don't look sick"   "you look great"   "you are exaggerating"
"you are just an easily upset person"
(actually, until this hit, I was a STOIC person ... rock solid)
"others have it worse so stop complaining"
"it could be worse, so stop complaining"
"try not to think about it"  -   :-\  Yeah, right ...

AND THE WORST - "God has His reasons" ... "God has His purpose for you having this" ....  "It's God's Will" ... "You aren't a good Christian because you complain about God allowing this to happen to you"

Great thread, sunnybunny  ;D

"You need to get a job. You should be working. You'd feel alot better." That's from my doctor.

Yeah, right. I had to QUIT my part-time job because I couldn't stay awake to feed and take care of my kids on even 3 hours a day work. Shut up, doc. I'll work for money cos I need it. Don't tell me I should work for my health.

Let's have a group scream! AAAHHHHHHHH!

Oh my Sunnybunny, I too have heard a lot of them to the point that I don't even mention anything medical anymore.

I sure know what you mean Liz, you have to wonder what these folks are thinking?

Y'all take care and have a great day -

LOL! I like that Joe!  Did they FORGET what I looked like even a year ago? I look terrible by comparison. I am starting to think I should reply with "Do you often lie to people?"

I think people mean well when they tell me I look good. "Good" must mean underweight (not by choice) with dark circles and always tired looking.

Thanks for this string - I really relate.

Great topic!

Get a part time job
Do volunteer work
Exercise
Before diagnosis, one doc told me my life 'lacked direction' lol
Even after diagnosis, a social worker tried to convince me that the reason I don't 'follow thru' on things is because I'm depressed. When I told her that I don't feel depressed, she tried to convince me that depression is not a mood disorder and that it was the likely cause of my fatigue.
"Unlike weakness, fatigue can be alleviated by periods of rest." -Wikipedia: Fatigue (medical)

When I try to explain "brain fog" people will say say. "I walk into a room and forget what I'm there for all the time. It happens to everyone."  Yes, I'm sure it does happen to everyone but does it happen all day, everyday and with everything you do??????

All you need to do is get off your butt and see a psychiatrist.
And I think this one is a classic - there is nothing wrong with you, you got somebody else's test results.

Lately, my reply to people who say I look good is, "Well, it is better to look good than to feel good."  They don't know how to take it.  Am I being sarcastic, am I being vain, what am I really saying?  It sort of stops them in their tracks because they don't know where to go from there.

You look so tired
You need to get out more
You need to start lifting weights,, (doctor told me that one)
I know a person that has something like that,
Did you ever see that ad for (fill in the blank),, it might help you
Are you seeing a therapist?
I see you in the yard doing some things, must not that bad
Were going ona two week vacation, are you going anywhere?,
Sometimes you can be such a drama queen,,
Maybe if you didnt talk about it so much or research it,, you might feel better,
Try not to think about it
maybe its in your head,,
How do you rate a handicap placard
The list could go on and on,, I just have become more cynical and call people on there callous remarks, you dont know me and I dont know you,, so keep your thougths to yourself

I don't know if it's a generational thing, but I find it's best to not even bring it up, to act and pretend like everything's 100% normal. If I have to, I'll say I have dry eyes or some such, but I don't go into detail, certainly not causes, chronic illness, treatments and the like. People usually really don't want to hear it, and it will forever change the way they see you. You can't take that back. It's dishonest, but it's _necessary_ to maintain even a modicum of a normal social life. If I'm not feeling good, I'll just say I'm sick, if they want details, I just say the flu. No one second guesses the flu.
I really don't take kindly to people looking down on me, so I don't give them the opportunity.
So far, after adopting this paradigm, I've stayed employed (fired from my last job for being sick), I still have friends, and even have a bit of a love interest (although, I am honest with her about it).

It's one thing to be ignorant, it's another thing to be demeaning.
