Post by: Bucky on October 17, 2014, 11:52:24 AM
Hi everyone!    :D

It's that time of year again . . . . time for a group challenge for those who wish to participate.

For those of you who are new to Sjogren's World, I'm Bucky, one of the staff members here at Sjogren's World.  For the past five years I have held various "group challenges" for our members to participate in if they wish to.  Just something fun for us to do.

If you'd like to read about some of our previous challenges, here are a few:  http://sjogrensworld.org/forums/index.php?topic=10189.0  http://sjogrensworld.org/forums/index.php?topic=13278.0  http://sjogrensworld.org/forums/index.php?topic=14461.0 ;our 2012 challenge we had:  http://sjogrensworld.org/forums/index.php?topic=21363.0   Last years challenge:  http://sjogrensworld.org/forums/index.php?topic=23603.0

This years challenge will be an assortment of different things - come back on Sunday, Oct. 19th to begin our Fall Challenge.

I'm hoping we can get at least 20 members to participate.  For those of you would don't normally participate on the forum and just come here to read, come on . . join us, we'd love to have you along!

Looking forward to our challenge together - I hope you'll join us.  Anybody willing to sign up today to join us in our Fall 2014 Challenge?

Day #1 of our 14-day Challenge

Hi Everyone - welcome to the Fall 2014 Group Challenge :D  This is going to be a two-week Challenge - starting today, October 19th through November 2nd.

I'm hoping that 20 members will join in this group challenge - the more the merrier!  A person can join anywhere along the way - just jump in and join in - we'd love to have you!  We've already got two brave souls - genko_b & Thea that signed up prior to the challenge starting . . .  :)

We all have "issues" dealing with Sjogren's, and these Challenges are just something fun to do without thinking about Sjogren's.  Sjogren's is an autoimmune disease we have, it is NOT who we are.

Unlike my previous Challenges in the past, where there was a specific "theme" for the entire Challenge - this time, there will be several different things we will be doing.  Some will be questions for us to answer - a sort of, "get-to-know you" kind of thing; some will be things for us to do; and whatever else I come up with.  ;)

Please always remember - anything you post on our forum is public domain - which can be viewed by members and non-members alike.  To protect your identity and your privacy, keep that in mind when posting.

Since today, October 19th is our kick-off day - here's the Challenge for today - do something fun today!  It can be anything you want that brings you joy, laughter, or a smile to your face.  Then . . . come back here and tell us about what you did for fun.  It's that simple.   :D

Many times in our Sjogren's journey - we forget to smile . . . we forget to laugh . . . we take life too seriously and need to relax more.  Stress is not a Sjoggie's friend.

Enjoy your day - do something fun - and come back and share it with us.   :D

As is my tradition with challenges - I will end each day with a quote - enjoy!

Bucky

"Always laugh when you can, it is cheaper than medicine."  (quote seen on many websites)

DO SOMETHING FUN TODAY...you're such a task master LOL! I did, before I even thought about "having to" I was making bent wire jewellery with my granddaughters! Lots of giggles, and three very proud little jewellery makers by the end of it.

Linda - your bent wire jewelry making sounds fun - wish I could have been there too!   :D

Today, my "fun" was going to lunch with my best friend.  Lately, we've been so busy we haven't had much chance for some quiet, one-on-one time.  It was perfect!!   :D

Keeping with the "fun" theme . . . I played a bunch of games this afternoon (Yahtzee, Bejeweled Blitz, Farkle, Peggle) . . . which I love, and took a nap . . . which I love.   ;D

Hope to hear from others who are going to join us in our 14-day Fall Challenge.

I went to the beach!

It's only five minutes away, but I rarely go there. It was absolutely beautiful. Amazingly warm breeze for this time of year, great grey building clouds off shore and a cyclone of seagulls. My little dog filled her nose with all the nice smells.

This beach is usually pretty empty.  As a bonus it turned out, just as I got there two carloads of tourists stopped.  I think it was a sport team from Eastern Europe--I couldn't quite place the language.  About a dozen very good-looking young men! Bonus!

Fun times!

Day #2 of our 14 day Challenge

We're off to a great start with jewelry making, a visit to the beach and good looking young men as a bonus  ;), time spent with grandchildren, a brand new grandbaby - congratulations to all!, and a walk w/hubby and a stop at a bookstore.  It all sounds like a perfect Sunday!

We have 6 members participating so far - we need at least 14 more to reach our 20 member goal.   ;)

The challenge for Day 2 is going to be five icebreaker, "get to know you" questions. We Sjoggies come from literally all over the world, we're all in different chapters in the book of life, we're young, middle aged, senior citizens and everywhere in between and as different as each snowflake that falls in the winter.

As different as we all are - we share a common bond, Sjogren's Syndrome.  To me, it helps to bounce ideas or ask questions with others who understand the journey I'm on.  When we come to this forum - everyone here "get's it" - you don't have to explain yourself, you won't get strange looks . . . we get it!

Some of us have been on this forum for years, others are brand new . . . everyone is welcome wherever you are in your Sjogren's journey.  So, let's find out a little about each other.

1)  What's your favorite color(s)?

2)  What's your favorite season?

3)  Do you have any pets?

4)  My ideal (or dream) vacation is ________________.

5)  If you had to describe yourself using three words, it would be ____, _____, _____.

Have a good Monday - enjoy this brand new day!   :)

Day #3 of our 14-Day Challenge

I don't know about you, but I've enjoyed reading everybody's "fun" activities and the answers to their questions.   :)

Welcome to new member, Carol, whose first post was in our 14-Day Challenge!  :D  I hope you find this site helpful to you in your Sjogren's journey.

Cheryl - I would love for you to come along on my beach "girls trip"!

So far, we're up to 13 members who are participating in this challenge.  Yay - the more the merrier!  You can join in anywhere along the 14 days even if you missed some days.

Our Challenge for Day #3 is:    Send a "thinking of you" card snail-mail to someone you haven't seen or talked with in a while.  There is something special about receiving an unexpected card in the mail that will brighten someone's day and also give them something tangible to look at again and again in the days to come.  Plus, it's always nice to be remembered.

Life gets busy with all the daily activities we have going on and it's not that we don't think of people, we just are busy and before you know it, a lot of time has passed since we've been in touch with them (sometimes, even years).

If you are so inclined, you could write a short note to include with the above card or at least say a few sentences in the card, don't just sign your name.  For those of you who are creative, you could even make your own card versus buying a store bought card.

All of these challenges during these 14 days are something that can be done in 10 minutes or less.  Surely you can spare 10 minutes of your time to bring happiness and a smile to someone else.   :)

Enjoy your day!

Great idea, Bucky! I sent a card to my granddaughter in college with a $20 in it yesterday, but I think I'll send a note to a friend of mine whose young daughter died unexpectly six months ago. Now that all the fanfare has passed, I bet she could use a kind word.

(Hey! I want to come on the girl trip to the beach with you and Cheryl!)

Day #4 of our 14-Day Challenge

A66eyroad, genko_b, Cheryl and ohiolady  - I'm sure your cards will be appreciated by those receiving them more than you will know.  Your thoughtfulness will lift their spirits.

Those of you who didn't get the chance to mail a card out yesterday, at least make an effort to complete this before the end of our 14-Day Challenge.

In talking with many different people recently, the consensus is the same - time is just flying by!  Hours turn into days, days into weeks, weeks into months, and months into years all in the blink of an eye.  How can 2014 and the month of October be almost over already?!?  They say the older you get the faster the years go by.  I believe this wholeheartedly.

Some of you will remember part of the Simon & Garfunkel song - The 59th Street Bridge (Feelin' Groovy) song:

Slow down, you move too fast
You got to make the morning last
Just kicking down the cobble stones
Looking for fun and feelin' groovy

In this hurry, hurry world we live in - we need to s-l-o-w down.  We need to smell the roses, kick some cobble stones, look for fun and be feelin' groovy.   :D

Today's challenge is to look at your daily activities - do you do things out of habit or necessity?  At the end of the day, do you feel like you've accomplished something, or do you feel more stressed, overwhelmed and exhausted by all of your activities?  Believe me, I know in one 24 hour period many of us wear many different hats.  Are there things that you can delegate to someone else to lessen your load, or better yet, to eliminate altogether?

For one day - leave something off your "to do" list.  Take 10 minutes of your day just to take a deep breath and breathe.  Turn off all the sounds that bombard us daily - enjoy the quietness of just you and your thoughts.  At some point in your day, you surely have 10 minutes for yourself.  If you don't feel you do, you are W-A-Y too busy!!

We don't have to be busy 24-7 - in fact, the stress of such a busy life is NOT good for us Sjoggies!!  Stress is not our friend.

Rest assured, if you were to suddenly be in an accident or get very sick and be flat on your back - your priorities would change in a heartbeat.  What seemed to be important before - won't really matter now.  Why wait for that to happen?  Slow down before then.  Learn to say "no" when asked to take on more responsibilities.

Enjoy your feelin' groovy day and then come back and share how you spent your 10 minutes as you slowed down for today.

I bet you'll have that song going through your head today!   ;D

Are you spying on my life??? Your challenges are so timely and opportune!

Yesterday's was just the "boot in the behind" I needed to drop a card in the mail to a dear friend I haven't seen in several months (unusual for us).

Today's happens to tie in beautifully with an ongoing project, one I started a couple of months ago, to better regulate and make use  of my time. After nearly 9 weeks of "scheduling" my days, and getting into the routine of housework and chores and away from the computer most of my waking moments, I've succeeded all too well and was feeling like an automaton, so it was time to pick one thing, and "let it go" for the day. I think the newly formed habits are set well enough that I can take a day off without losing my progress (anyone who spent years working odd and irregular shifts will know that "routine housework" is far from routine, things get done when they get done, that's it!). Helpfully, hubby had a appointment for his vehicle, so while he's out, there's no blaring TV or computer videos (he's hearing impaired and like things LOUD). Thanks for leading me to realize how much I need this!

Can't wait to see tomorrows!

Bucky I was so busy me and my husband yesterday, that I didn't get to post on yesterday's challenge, but I did it. lol...
We both had to get flu shots and some other shots.

Anyway, I wrote in a little note card to our nurse practitioner who has been so covered up and sick herself that we usually see, but due to all of it haven't seen her for awhile. So before we left, I had the receptionist to give it to her. I told her we miss her, and when she gets home to put her feet up and rest. She and her husband have a little kitten they adopted that was left out on their door step, and she always hears about out doggies. The little note card had a picture on the front of a kitten, and puppy.

She has been so good to us. Her and her husband went for a dream vacation back in the summer to Hawaii for their anniversary, and she brought me and my husband back a t-shirt from there that is so pretty.

My favorite author, Kurt Vonnegut, is often quoted for saying:  "And I urge you to please notice when you are happy, and exclaim or murmur or think at some point, 'If this isn't nice, I don't know what is.' "

Lately I've been trying to say this to myself often during the day. So this assignment is right up my alley!

And, as Linda said, I can't wait to see what you have for us tomorrow!

Day 4 challenge: I feel very fortunate to have a schedule that includes plenty of quiet time - both meditation and time to practice Japanese tea ceremony, which is like a moving meditation. Got the opportunity to do both today!

This evening I should be answering emails and working on lesson plans, but instead my husband and sister and I are going out to dinner at a special restaurant, for some quiet conversation and good food. A great way to refresh.

Love today's challenge! My kids' school is having a Spirit Day at a local fast food chain. I was going to run like a bat out of heck to get from one meeting to the restaurant to get lunch for my kids and the  drive around to different schools dropping them off.  After reading the challenge, I decided to go home, have a lunch all by myself in my house and take the dog for a leisurely stroll. What a great break that made the rest of our hectic afternoon easier to manage :) The kids bought their own lunches and the school was out probably $1 total from whatever happy meals I would have purchased - and in return I got some of my sanity back!

Today the dogs and I went for a long walk, which we do every day.  The difference was, I was totally present and wasn't thinking about the "stuff" I would do once we got home.  I enjoyed our time together.  And I know the boys did too!

Great job to all of you who have sent or handed someone a card.  It will mean a lot to the person receiving it.  Last week I got a postcard AND a card in the mail from friends - something I can look at over and over and smile each time I do, while remembering the person who sent it to me.   :)

I'm glad several of you were able to s-l-o-w down yesterday.  Even for 10 minutes It does make a difference, doesn't it?

Catherine, as I was organizing my thoughts for Day #4 Challenge, I actually typed several paragraphs directly relating to parents and their hurried schedules shuffling kids from event, to event and made a comment, "was it all necessary? ".  Obviously, I deleted those paragraphs and decided not to post it.  Funny you should mention the very thing I had been thinking about!   ;)  I'm glad you got to take a break and s-l-o-w down!

In my deleted post, I mentioned that if WE are stressed with all the activities - what about our kids?  They too suffer from over-scheduled days that are full of all kind of activities.  We're teaching them that they have to be busy, busy, busy.  I know parents/grandparents that are taxi's shuffling kids from point A to point B, driving thru the fast food lane before continuing onto point C and D before arriving home in the evening at 8:30 p.m., only to have to their child work on homework before bed, and then start the vicious cycle all over the next day.  Very tiring for everyone involved.  I'm tired just typing it all!   ;)

For myself, it never fails, when I decide it's time to just "chill" for a few minutes - I get all comfy in the recliner, close my eyes and then the phone rings!   :-\  It happens at least 50% of the time!  Or, someone in the family comes home and there goes my peace and quiet.  Sigh.

Day #5 of our 14-Day Challenge

I'm sure many of you will agree that life in today's times is much different from when we were growing up.  We didn't have to be afraid to go to school wondering if someone was going to come into our classroom and shoot us.  Or worrying about being shot while going to the movie theater, church, or a shopping mall - we didn't have those worries back then.

We didn't have to worry about someone placing a backpack filled with shrapnel going off as we ran a marathon, or highjackers taking over our airplane flight.

I don't ever remember our schools having "lock downs" - today, it's not uncommon for our schools to go into lockdown or have the K-9 units there sniffing lockers, classrooms or vehicles in the parking lot.

I remember seeing pictures in our family photo album of our family having a picnic on the White House lawn in Washington, D.C.  in the 1960's.  You would never be able to do that now.

Times are changing . . . . today's young people don't know the freedoms that once existed.  Freedoms that have been taken away by some who want to hurt innocent people.

Our thoughts are with the Canadian people who are facing these challenges at the present time.

I'll stop here - as we don't want to get into a debate about these issues.  I'm just stating the facts how things have changed in our society worldwide.

With that being said, I still believe that there are more good people in this world than those who wish innocent people harm.

Day #5's Challenge is always one of my favorites - do a random act of kindness.  It doesn't have to be something that ends up on the evening news on TV.  It doesn't have to cost any money - although, it could if you want.  Most of the time, it's just a matter of being helpful to someone else.  Reach a box on a shelf way too high in a grocery store for some people to reach, let a person go in front of you in line, pay for their latte, grab a rake and rake leaves in a yard, bake some cookies for a neighbor, etc.  The list is endless.

I have paid the bill for the car behind me in line at fast food before.  A couple months back, the car in front of me paid MY bill.  It takes you by surprise and put's a different spin on your day.  It feels good.   :D  I've been on both ends of this giving and receiving and they both feel good.

There's your assignment . . . do a random act of kindness.  In doing so, you will be blessed too, and you'll also show others that there ARE good people in this world.   :)

Easier done than said!

I belong to a group called "Pay it Forward", essentially, if someone does something nice for you, do the same for the next person you see who needs it, ........little actions mean a lot! Someone in the group once asked me what RAK or PIF were to me, and without thought, I replied "It's a way of life". I was very lucky to be brought up by people who lived their lives through RAK, and seeing it, rather than hearing about it, had a lasting impression. I'm also privileged to live in a place where it's not seen as "forward", or "invasive", or "interfering" to spontaneously help someone out; a place where, if you see a young mother struggling with a toddler, a babe in arms and a bag of groceries, you can safely offer to carry any one of them without causing suspicion. Here, its more common than not to have doors held open for you, elevators kept waiting, pedestrians waved across roads by stopped motorists, and loose change offered is someone ahead in line is a little short.

Unfortunately, this kind of puts me on the spot in a situation like your challenge, Bucky, because I just act in these situations and forget about it, it's such a natural thing to do. Today, I will try to take note of the opportunities presented to me,and let you know what I was able to do for my own well being by helping someone else.

Do animals count?

I work part-time for a non-profit that cares for an rehabilitates horses who have been seized by authorities from situations of extreme abuse and neglect....we give them medical care and (when they are healthy enough), retrain them with gentle methods and help them find new homes.

They rely on donated everything: money, vet care, farrier care, hay, and equipment. Needless to say, most of the budget goes towards necessities!

There are a couple of horses there who have not done well with the limited bits (the part of the bridle that goes in the horse's mouth) that are available. So I bought some new and different ones that offer more choices - horses can be surprisingly picky!!!! I plan on helping them build a "bit library" so the horses can be more comfortable in their training. Today I bring in 3 new bits! :)

Aside from the bigger gestures, I think it's a good idea to ALWAYS look for opportunities to be kind and help others. Simple things like smiling and being pleasant to cashiers at the store, etc can make a HUGE difference...even when the other person is being surly or distracted. In fact, ESPECIALLY when they are!

I have worked lots of service jobs over the years, and it's a HARD way to make a living. One customer going out of their way to be kind can make a huge difference.

Bucky I have got to do a catch up day. I forgot to post yesterdays. They called me to come back over for labs, because the day before the new young guy who is learning didn't label my blood. lol... So yesterday morning I went back. My husband always goes with me for any medical stuff no matter what. Well I told him I was stepping out of that mold for that morning.

I went myself, and it was so pretty and sunny, and nice fresh cool air, morning time. I had to wait a bit so I was just sitting by a window and thinking of nothing, but how pretty the trees with their leaves looked. I also noticed how nice the sun was even though I can't be in it long.

As I went back out to the car, I just kind of slowed down my walk to breathe deeply the fresh cool air, and look all around me, like I use to do as a little girl. Those moments were so so nice.  :)

Day 5 -  Today my granddaughters and I raked the leaves from the neighbour's lawn.  He is in his nineties, and afterall, the leaves came off of my tree.   ;).  I do this every year for him but I thought it important to show the girls the value in helping others, so the timing of the challenge and their visit were perfect.

They had a ball.  And while we were working, the elderly gent came outside to thank us.  And he handed them each a crisp five dollar bill!  "What will you do with the money?" I asked later.  They thought for a moment then decided to save it to buy a house together.  And to make sure it is near me so they can visit me often.   :'(   Gosh.  Talk about paying it forward!

Bucky, I also wanted to thank you as a Canadian, for mentioning the shocking tragic day we experieced in our capital city yesterday.  We remain strong and united.  And grateful for the support from our many allies.

Well, I had an interesting day..........no lack of opportunity for kindness, as always, whether holding a door open, a compliment to the mother of a polite child, or letting two older gentlemen go ahead of me in line for our flu shots (of course they were trying to let me go ahead LOL), but my favourite one was chatting with a lady in the craft department at a department store, who was working on a piece for a quilt.

She was doing a lovely job (she had it with her to match some fabrics), in what will eventually be a fantastic quilt for her grandson, but the question came up in conversation, "do you know an easy way to use the backing as binding?" I showed her the simple way my grandmother taught me, and she actually remembered seeing it years ago, but had forgotten. I actually felt like the recipient of an act of kindness, she was so generous in sharing her handiwork, and her devotion to her grandson, with me. Win-win situation!

I echo Carebear's thank you........As Canadians, we are appreciative of our friends and neighbours, and proud of those serving in our military and our Parliament, and I personally take great pride in the actions of the people on the street in Ottawa, who, without hesitation, ran to the assistance of the fallen soldier, administering CPR and comfort, until the emergency response teams arrived.

Day 4 challenge:  Took the afternoon off and sat on my new deck with my puppy and reading a book. It was a bit more than the 10 minutes, but I really needed it.  :)

Day 5 challenge: acts of kindnesse..... there were so many opportunities that happened today. Even though I didn't know it was the assignment, I managed to perform many little act of kindness while at the hospital doing some volunteer work.

It has been a good couple of days.  :)

Day #6 of our 14-Day Challenge

How did everyone do with your random act of kindness?  I'm sure there are daily many opportunities to share kindness if we just pay attention and slow down to realize them.

Carebear - it was an excellent teaching opportunity for your granddaughters to see kindness in action as you all raked the neighbors leaves.  Good job!

Sleepy - yes, doing an act of kindness for animals and/or for those who care for them counts!  I'm sure the horses will enjoy having a variety of bits to fit each of their specific needs during their rehabilitation.  What a kind thing for you to donate 3 new bits

Susanep -  I'm glad you enjoyed taking in the beauty of the day looking out the window waiting for your appointment and while going back to your car.  I bet your husband was very surprised you went to the appointment on your own.   :)

Aliendog - glad you got to enjoy your new deck along with a book and your puppy.

Linda196 -  I'm sure you did enjoy the conversation and idea shared with the lady in the craft department - right up your alley!   ;)  Another bonding time with this lady is the fact she was devoted to her grandson, much like you are to your three granddaughters.

We have 16 members participating in this group challenge - we're only four people away from my 20 member participating goal.  If you missed joining us on day #1, it's not too late to join in for the rest of the challenges.  We'd love to have you!

If you signed up to participate and haven't had the chance to do any of the previous days challenges, it's not too late to catch up.   ;)

Day #6 Challenge is in your hands . . . it's pick your challenge day!  What does that mean?  It means, YOU decide the challenge you are going to do today.  The sky's the limit on what you pick.

It will be interesting to read what your challenge was and how you completed it.

Hmmmm . . . . what WILL you choose?!?

Have a great Friday!!

Yesterday's "kindness" challenge gave me a chance to be more conscious of being polite as a driver.

As you may remember, I have just over an hour to commute each way to and from work every day. Some days it feels like the Indy 500, with all the cars jostling for position at 70 and 80 miles per hour.

I try to make it a habit to be kind, to let others change lanes in front of me, to let people "in" and flash my lights as a "thank you" when someone does the same for me.

Some days this is tougher than others! But yesterday I made a very conscious effort to be extra nice.

It ended up making me feel a lot calmer when I got to where I was headed.

Random act of kindness for me yesterday was also driving with an awareness that I can only control my own driving, and the wish that we all make it safely to our destinations.

My personal challenge for today is to clean the refrigerator. That may not seem like much, but I put it off all the time.

Today I went to my mother's quarterly care meeting at the nursing home.Things went very well. My mom had started with dementia last fall.  However, she fell and broke her hip in January. After almost a week in the hospital she was taken to a nursing home for rehabilitation and then it has turned into long term care.

I asked if they ever had classes for families to help deal with dementia. So now I planted a little seed as they are going to try to do something like that in the future.

Made my day!

Well, I didn't go out yesterday to do a random act of kindness, but my dad heard from one of my sisters that his doctor may have not said he would not see my dad again for those who remember this (dad left nursing home when doctor wanted him to stay).

He didn't want to just ask though, and neither did my sisters. So I thought I would call there and ask his nurse or other worker there. They said they could call dad and tell him after me telling them he was kind of shy to ask. I knew dad wanted so bad to know, but wouldn't admit it.

They called and told him he does still have the same doctor which makes dad very happy, but he said he did not appreciate me asking. lol.... So the result was good for dad.  :)

When I am out and see any older person or someone on crutches etc. I always do jump up to open doors that kind of thing. This did help me though with what some others of you have mentioned to help me to do even more things the next time I am out.

I will have to get back later tonight on today's challenge.

Day 6 -  I really do need to improve my driving manners.  I am embarrassed to admit that I let little things get to me all the time and tend to use my horn as often as my brakes.   :-[

So today there was a conscious effort to release the tension.  There were no hand gestures, and the car horn was made to feel lonely and unloved.

Moving on, I plan to keep improving.  Wish me luck.  I know it's no excuse, but I have been rear ended twice and
t-boned once with my granddaughters in the car, all in the last two years.  I guess it has taken a toll on me.

We're having our huge annual Halloween Party tomorrow night, and I usually make tons of homemade food and work myself half to death. I like to cook for people and special events, but it's a lot of work.

I've been running behind all week on party prep because my daughter has been sick (she's better and back to school as of yesterday), so I decided to just swallow my pride and get some pre-made party food at Costco so i can enjoy myself and not drop from exhaustion.

That's kinda new for me....and I think it's a good choice. Health and happiness for myself as well as everyone else - what a concept!!!!  :P

Day 6- I earned an even greater respect for you today, Bucky....picking out these challenges is HARD!

A friend of mine made a list today, of why it was a great day for her......little things, unexpected things, things that might not be noticed by anyone else, but things that made her day great, from her perspective. I decided my challenge was to find five things like that, that made MY day great, and here they are:

1/ I woke up a bit later than usual this morning, after a solid night's sleep, without even a bathroom break!
2/ After a difficult week for the country I love, I was heartened to see support, signs of national pride, and respect for our forces, everywhere I looked.
3/ I found the tea that I like on an unadvertised special, and stocked up.
4/ My daughter brought me 6 apple pies from our church's women's group fund raiser, all safely tucked into the freezer now.
5/ Something I ordered for my hubby came to the dealer, and I was able to plan a road trip with him to pick it up.

The greatest thing I noticed was that there were lots of other things I could have listed! I think my challenge turned out to be APPRECIATION!

Good job everyone . . . I love hearing what you're doing each day for the Challenge.

There will be times where we put our focus on others and then there are times where we focus on ourselves.  We can't just go through life giving and giving and never re-filling ourselves in the process.  It's all about balancing both.

Today I finished a challenge that has been on my "to list" for months.  There are times where what I NEED to do will only take a little bit of my time, it's the getting motivated to DO it that takes forever!   ;)  I've had some miscellaneous items from our house remodel that we did back in the spring that were still laying around that I finally put away.  Yay!  Tomorrow, I tackle the dining room table!

Of course, company coming over this weekend is a great motivator!!   :D

Day #7 & Day 8 of our 14-day Challenge:

I hope you all are enjoying these Challenges - it gives us something to focus on outside of our Sjogren's.

Linda - it HAS been harder this time around coming up with Challenge ideas - in the past, I had one theme for the entire challenge, not something different each day.

With the addition of gmomjuju today (glad you could join us), we're up to 17 members participating in this challenge.  We need three more members to join to meet my 20 member goal.  hint, hint   ;)

This weekend - days 7 & 8 are going to be a combination challenge.  You can do one part of it one day, the other part the next day, or do a combination of both parts each day.

Part #1 -  here in the U.S./Canada we are winding down Fall and soon heading into winter.  We won't have very many more opportunities to enjoy the fall weather before the temperatures stay cooler.  (Here in Illinois we'll be in the high 60's and 70's for several days . . yay!!) So, it's time for us to spend at least 10 minutes outside either both days, or at least one of the days.

Enjoy the beautiful color palette of the changing leaves before they are all gone (the trees in our front yard only have a few leaves still hanging on - the wind we had this week knocked them off sooner than they would have fallen  :( ).  Enjoy the smells and sounds of fall - the smell and crunch of drying leaves, the chatter of squirrels busy gathering nuts for the winter, flocks of birds flying south for the winter, the snap of twigs as you walk in the woods, or the smell of a campfire.

Part #2 -  collect some of the free decorations nature provides and bring them inside and decorate your house with them (that is, if you don't have allergies to any of it).  I bring in acorns, pine cones, different colored leaves, and branches that have fallen.

If you have a garden, you might have grown pumpkins or gourds to bring inside.

I still have the leaves pressed in a book from a challenge five years ago. It still smells like fall when I open that book.   :)

These last few days of October are going to slip away quickly - enjoy them while they are here.

Have a great weekend!

Part #1 - done!   ;D  Today I spent time outside trimming bushes that needed it.  I've waited all summer to see if my husband or son would do it . . . I guess since it is the end of October it's safe to assume they aren't going to do it.  Some times, it's just easier to do it yourself!  It's hard to work on something when you're sweating and the salt is going into your eyes and your eyes are burning.   :-\

Since Sjogren's and Plaquenil - I am sensitive to the sun.  I could feel the sun burning my leg through my jeans!  When I was done outside and came in to take a shower, yep - my leg had red welts on it right where I was getting the sun burning feeling.  Plus, it's harvest time and the farmers are in the fields harvesting their corn and soybeans and the box elder bugs and ladybugs are swarming everywhere.  The ladybugs bite too . . . ouch!

Now you see why I end up staying indoors more often than not . . . I don't like bugs, and the sun doesn't like me.   ???

Hope you are having nice weather wherever you are - we were in the 70's today, which was perfect.

My husband and I live in Florida for most of the year, so we don't have a true fall.  But, the time is changing in a few weeks so my husband and I are spending our evenings on the patio.  In a few weeks, we will have to come in at 6:00 pm.

Everyone enjoy your fall!

I think my days of what I am doing are kind of already over lapping each other. lol.. The other day (Friday) I read some articles by a woman living with Cancer and how each moment is truly living. I found such inspiration from her, and kept reading more of her writings. It took me away from my problems. Reading this was different for me, because I usually go to the same places reading and responding, but not reading just for the sake of reading. Does that make any sense. lol....

Now as for Saturday, I hadn't read the weekend challenge until now, but Saturday I was watching the squirrels climbing up and down the trees, probably getting them some acorns to store up for winter. I was admiring the colorful leaves, but also many are on the ground now. I would feel them crunching under my feet.I watched leaves flying through the air.

I will let you know what I do later today.

I work outdoors, so that part is easy! :) (If the weather cooperates....  :o )

Had a nice calm ride around the "Back 40" with my teenage lesson client yesterday morning, and it only rained on us a little bit.

Today we're going to the local farm where we've picked out pumpkins every year since our daughter was 2 years old. They farm the land with old machinery and draft horses, and grow all sorts of yummy organic veggies, so we'll come home with lots of edible souvenirs of the season, and support local agriculture at the same time. :)

It's a little poignant, though - after this year we only get to do this one more time before our daughter is off to college and her own life. 18 years goes by QUICK!!!!!

I wanted to participate in this weekend's challenge.  Really I did.

But the weather turned very cold, very windy.  And it started snowing two hours ago.   :(

Let's rewind to last weekend.  We went for a walk in our beautiful river valley, enjoying the Fall colours and the crunching of dried leaves.  Lots of sightings of birds, squirrels, and even a coyote two blocks from my house.  The dogs didn't even react.   Maybe they were stunned like me because it walked within 25 feet of us.

Now, it is a distant memory as I watch the snow accumulate.

Day #3 -  Send a thinking of you card by snail mail.

Day #4 - S-l-o-w down day.

Day #5 - Random act of kindness.

Very cool new challenge! I got outside today and have flowers and branches from the yard in vases throughout the house. I'll check in tomorrow on the desert island challenge - need to think about what to bring.

I'm gonna stretch the definition of "object" and say I'd bring either my horse or my dog....too hard to choose which one!

If they don't count as "objects" I'd probably choose a favorite book. Maybe "How To Survive on a Desert Island"  ;)

OK, I really thought about it and decided the one thing to bring to a desert island would be enough fresh water to keep me going until I found a source on the island or built something to condense fresh water out of salt water. That's what comes of having a mother whose hobby was survival camping!

I really want to bring my smart phone, so I can play my old radio shows to keep me entertained.  And of course to call for help.  But I decided that if it counts as one item, I would bring my medications and supplements and all my other fixins.  :D

Day 5: Acts of Kindness.  A friend of mine's 5 year old son has extreme food sensitivites to the point where he is severly underweight.  She was stressed out after her pediatrician visit so I whipped up a batch of allergen free "lax balls" (almond butter, gluten free oats, cacoa nibs, coconut and maple syrup). It made him so happy and she was thrilled that he wanted to eat them. It made me happy to do something so small that could bring such unexpected joy :)

Day 6: Okay, so I went a little backwards on the stopping and smelling the roses Day. I decided to have a day that I would have had before this disease and the fatigue. SO, I started with a TRX class (similar to Crossfit), went straight to a hot yoga class, lunch with friends, then to an hour long private tennis lesson and was home in time to do homework with the kiddos. It was a FABULOUS day because I felt like no matter what sjogren's throws at me I can still have days like this! Now tomorrow might be a different story ;) So that gets me to Day 7: I am going to go the barn tomorrow and just graze my horse tomorrow - not ride or anything but just enjoy being outside with her.

catherine - those "lax balls" sound good.  That was very kind of you to do that for your friend's child.  That will leave a lasting impression on the young boy too!

Wow, sounds like you had a busy day #6!  Glad you had a good day.   :D

So, my Day #9 reply - my husband thinks I'm being a bit extreme but, hey . . it's my challenge and it's my object!  LOL

Unlike some of you, who were practical in what you chose, I choose to bring a fully equipped motor home (meaning food, beds, working bathroom and a table - oh, and I hope they have electrical hook-up . . LOL).  Might as well live in comfort while on this desert island!   ;D  Although, I would rough it and NOT have a laptop, computer or cell phone.  I would have a deck of cards, dice, a backgammon board, and some other games to play.

Ever since my outdoor time on Saturday (Part of Days 7 & 8 ), I have developed this very, very itchy areas on my neck and both arms.  Not sure if it's from insect bites, or the sun since I am so sensitive to it.  So, with that being said, I can justify the above motor home.  That's my story, and I'm sticking to it!!    8)

This one was hard! My first thought was my laptop........but I strongly doubt that a desert island would have WiFi. Medications? don't have to think of bringing those anywhere, they are part of me. Books? maybe, but not terribly practical.

A KNIFE! handiest tool around; good for food gathering and prep, cutting materials for shelter and fashionable survivor clothes, digging, and once I have the surviving down pat........whittling to pass the time and feed my creative side LOL

Better plan? Don't get stranded on a desert isle in the first place! I prefer the islands of the resort nature, with hot and cold running room service.

I am going with Bucky's idea, a fully equipped motor home.  When my husband and I leave home I always say, as long as I have my meds and water I am okay.  I can buy anything else I may forget.  But, I just like the motor home.:)

Day #10 of our 14-Day Challenge

Is everybody still hanging out at the desert island??   ;)  Has anyone seen Gilligan, The Professor or MaryAnn anywhere?  LOL

Note about my motor home - there are a few rules.  No snoring or talking in your sleep. I sleep with a fan on year-round (for white noise) . . . of course, this will be a major problem if this island has no electric!!   :-\  (note to self - check into small portable generator to be used in dire circumstances)

I've watched the television show, Survivor for years - there is no way I would purposely ever WANT to be in the position that I was left with only the bare necessities to "survive" having to be resourceful to find food and shelter.  I would definitely make sure genko and Linda were there on the island with me!!  :D  We need to practice making fire.

Today's challenge is: go through your clothes closet and pull out five items that have been hanging there, not worn, and donate them to a cause that can use them.  I've read many times that the statistics are that 80% of the time people only wear 20% of the same items in their closets!!  That's a lot of space being taken up by things we don't wear.

My guess is the items that are on the far left and far right in our closets don't move to the middle of the closet very often, if ever.  Get rid of them.

"But I love this dress, and when I lose 10 pounds I can wear it again" . . . how many years have you been telling yourself this?  Get rid of it.

If you just don't love the item - get rid of it.

Those of you who have been on the forum for a while know that I love to garage sale.  At ALL of the sales I go to, there are TONS of clothes.  People have w-a-y too many clothes!

For this challenge you could also do the same for shoes and boots - if they don't fit properly, aren't the right color, or you just don't like them - donate them.

Coats could also be something to go through and donate unused ones.  With the colder temperatures coming (at least here in the U.S. and Canada), many times you will see the "Coats for Kids" barrels in area stores where they collect new or gently used coats to be given to those who need a warm winter coat.

Have a good day!

I love these  challenges, but I am stuck for the moment with issues. I enjoyed a few minutes of seeing the pretty leaves again while sitting in the doctors office. A few breathing issues is keeping me from gathering outsides things at the moment, and the closet thing is out until I hope maybe tomorrow I can catch up. Later tonight maybe I can manage to take out something of my closet and leave out.

Oh, I can do the one about being on a island. How can I forget that one. It's a hard one, because first I thought of my bible, then I thought without water to drink it wouldn't be long I couldn't read it anyway. lol.. Then I thought, well  I don't want to be anywhere without my husband.

Ok, so here goes. lol.. I would have my husband with me, and we both would be wearing clothes with many pockets all the way down in front and back. Each pocket is big enough for a bottle of water, plus protein bars, and in one of my husband's pockets is a cell phone to call for rescue. No room needed for my bible, because I say to myself those verses I remember. lol... In one pocket is a packet of dried coffee, and in another is a fold out cup. In another is a box of matches so we get a little fire started to make some coffee. We lay back on our self made chairs from things on the island and relax, relax. relax.

DAY 10-Finished today's specific challenge.......five items gone! I think it's leading me to expand on the specifics though, there's going to be more items going over the next few weeks, for sure! I've already started a pile.

Bit of a backfire though, when I dropped the first five articles (that dress you spoke of, that I'll wear again when I lose XX pounds, was in the bundle) the lady who runs the church sales handed me nearly new winter coats for two of my granddaughters! She's a neighbour and always keeps an eye out for things we can use. At least these won't take up residence in my closets LOL

I think I kind of sidestepped DAYS 7 and 8; we had a blustery, rainy, windy, thunder and lightening kind of weekend, so I didn't get out much, although I made a point of going out between showers for a walk. With everything wet and soggy, I wasn't inclined to bring anything in, but I did take some pictures, and some of them may end up matted and framed, so they will add to the d├ęcor. Others might become background for scrapbook pages, stationary or greeting cards.

Ha . . . no thanks, susanep - I'll pass!   ;)

Linda - good job today!  Just make sure your granddaughters coats go to THEIR house!

I've seen your photography skills and I'm sure the pictures you plan to frame for your "dA@cor" (I don't know how to make the symbol above the A) are beautiful!

grammad97 - you can still play "catch-up" - we don't mind.   :D  The challenge isn't over yet - we've still got several more days left.  Jump in when you can.

ohiolady - that sounds like a good policy to follow - good for you!

I've got my first five items sitting on the bed ready to be dropped off tomorrow when I'm in town.  I too will be pulling more things out in the next few weeks.

Good job everyone!

Day #11 of our 14-Day Challenge

Just a reminder, that if you haven't been able to keep up with the daily challenges, its okay, you can always finish them at your own pace.

Today's challenge is five more "get-to-know-you" questions.   :D

1)  What was your favorite show when you were growing up?

2)  What's your favorite restaurant?

3)  What kind of music do you like?

4)  What was the first car you owned?

5)  What is your favorite guilty pleasure?

Happy Wednesday to you all!

Day 11 challenge questions:

1. Favorite TV show growing up: What in the World, a local show put on by the archaeological museum. Three archaeologists would try to guess the origin and use of several artifacts in each show. We would rush home after Sunday morning services to see it - the only time our family was allowed to eat lunch while watching TV. I still miss that show!

2. Favorite restaurant: How to choose? Right now a toss-up between a Japanese restaurant and a Turkish one. Both have outstanding food.

3. Kind of music: Hits from the '60s.

4. First car: A Subaru station wagon, one of the first in this country. Husband's was a '57 VW Beetle.

5. Guilty pleasure: How to choose? First one was concord grapes, picked from our neighbor's arbor. He said I could eat anything I could reach from sitting on the ground, but couldn't lift my bottom off the ground even a bit. Developed quite a stretch in my arm!

I'll get to the closet tomorrow!

1.  Marcus Welby M.D.

2. A place in St. Petersburg, Florida called Middleground Grill.

3.  Contemporary Christian music

4.  A black Plymouth Barracuda.  I didn't like it but dad did.

5.  I love homemade desserts to a fault.

I was sick yesterday so I wasn't able to log on, so I missed cleaning out the five items. Five items feels do-able, thanks for limiting the amount! I can do that this evening.

1.) When I was a kid I loved a local children's show from New York City called The Sandy Becker Show.
2.) My husband is the best cook in the world, so we hardly ever go out to eat.
3.) The Beatles. I also like classic Motown sounds.
4.) A navy blue 1972 Ford Pinto hatchback. I had that car for ten years, loved it!
5.) Guilty pleasure --- potato chips! Even better with onion soup mix dip!

Well I am going to write down the answers to today's challenge, and still working on the clothes out of the closet. I hardly ever cook anymore, but I have some chicken baking, and just finished some dishes. Doing a bit of catch up with my hand sewing for things too.

 1) What was your favorite show when you were growing up? All the movies with Gidget, Yvette Mimieaux (sp), and those with Troy Donahue in them.  :)

2)  What's your favorite restaurant? Buddy's Bar-b-que.

3)  What kind of music do you like? Pretty Inspirational Music, Jazz, and Blue Grass.

4)  What was the first car you owned? It was a 97 Nisan Sentra, Burgundy color. First one I bought new after divorce.

5)  What is your favorite guilty pleasure? Potato chips, because I crave salt, but not suppose to have them, and cheese cake. (too many calories, but oh so good)

1)  What was your favorite show when you were growing up? Toss up between Doctor Who and Star Trek (the original one)

2)  What's your favorite restaurant? A place called "Acadienne Menu", only open during the summer. They serve the usual summer fare around here; fried sea food with french fries, but also home made Acadian specialties that you would have had to grow up with to appreciate; things like poutine rapee (potato dumpling wrapped around a pork filling), beignes (lacy thin potato pancake), fish cakes, baked beans, and "pets du soeur" (like a butterscotch sticky roll)

3)  What kind of music do you like? good old Rock n Roll!

4)  What was the first car you owned? '74 Mazda

5)  What is your favorite guilty pleasure? hot home made bread with butter and molasses

1)  What was your favorite show when you were growing up?  That's tough to pick one - we watched Bonanza, Gunsmoke, The Andy Griffith Show, Lassie, Flipper, Little House on the Prairie, The Waltons, The Patty Duke Show . . . okay, okay - so we watch too much t.v.   ;)

2)  What's your favorite restaurant?  Logan's Roadhouse or a local Italian place called Michael's.

3)  What kind of music do you like?  Oldies and Lite Rock

4)  What was the first car you owned?  A Ford Maverick

Days 12 & 13 of our 14-Day Challenge

We're coming up on the last few days left of our 2014 Challenge.   :-\

Today's challenge is a 2-day challenge:  This is going to be an "expiration date" challenge.  When was the last time you went through your medicine cabinet, makeup, spice rack, refrigerator, pantry, etc. checking on expiration dates?  Some times the years fly by and before you know it, the product is a couple years past it's expiration date!   :o

Medicine loses it's effectiveness once it goes past the expiration date.  They use to tell people to flush pills down the toilet - now, they say not to do that.  I know here where I live, the pharmacy will take back expired medicine (has to be in original container) and they will dispose of them.

Not only pills, but anything that comes in a tube (first aid cream, poision ivy cream, A & D Ointment, etc.) has an expiration date.  I know for myself, that some times I have only used the product once - there is a full tube of it left.  However, it expired four years ago!!   :o  As much as you hate to do it, throw it away and get fresh.

I know I have kept (and used) suntan lotion for years and years . . . did you know they have expiration dates on them?  Hmmm, maybe that explains why they were so runny when I tried to use them.   ::)

When was the last time you checked all the makeup that you use?  They don't last forever or until they get used up - they do go bad.  Unopened, cosmetics can be good for a couple of years at room temperature.  Once a product is opened and exposed to air, your fingers, etc., you transfer germs to them.  Heat and humidity promotes growth of mold and yeast too.   I found the following guidelines about keeping makeup.

     *  Face Makeup - six months for liquids, two years for powders
     *  Mascara - three months    (and don't "pump" the wand in and out, each time you do that you are putting air and bacteria into the tube)
     *  Eyeliner and Eye Shadow - Liquid eyeliners, three months; cream eye shadow - six months; pencil eyeliners and powder eye shadows - two years
     *  Lipstick and Lipliner - Lipstick and gloss, two years; lipliner - two years or more
     *  Nail Polish - one to two years  (avoid storing these in the bathroom)
     *  Sunscreen - six months
     *  Hair Products - one year
     *  Fragrance - two years
(information for this post was taken from  goodhousekeeping.com)

In our current economy, we certainly want to get the most for our money - however, stretching the products we use past their expiration date or freshness can cause us infections or sickness.  We don't need either of those!!

So, check out your medicine cabinet and your makeup and get rid of products that have expired, dried up, changed color, changed smell, etc.  Same for the kitchen - refrigerator, spices, pantry.

I wonder what the oldest date is that we'll find as we check expiration dates?

Still working but so far I have found a bottle of L-Formula Lysine that expired in May 2005.   :o    ;D  (The kindly gentleman that recommended it to me has also expired.   :'()

Thanks for mentioning about taking these back to the pharmacist -- I'm going to ask our locals about that.  We do have the drop off promotions but they are not often, and I always miss them.

MarieB - glad you have joined in on our little group adventure.   :)

We have 18 people participating this time around for our challenge.  Two people short of my goal of 20 - sniff, sniff - but, that's okay . . maybe next time.   ;)

I just got home from work and haven't jumped in to see what is lurking in our medicine cabinet yet - I'm afraid to see what I find!   :o

Not good timing for me Bucky.

Let me add to the expiration date challenge a tip my pharmacy gave to me as one means to dispose of outdated RX meds: used wet coffee grounds in a baggy, dump the med in there and let it dissolve in the coffee grounds before tossing in trash.

I can't do the expiration date one either. I once ask the pharmacist about some meds and vitamins and he said certain ones if kept where they should be could be good 3 years later, and some vitamins 5 years later.

I don't use some of the make ups anymore. I use nail polish up faster than it goes past that date.

Love reading everybody's responses! So fun - thanks for putting this together Bucky and for reading everyone's responses so thoughtfully :)

Day 9: Although it would be another "mouth" to feed, I would bring my horse on the desert island. Not exactly a survival necessity, but she brings me so much joy and I could have mini adventures everyday exploring the island on her.

Day 10: Since I recently purged my own closet, I went through all 3 of my boys' closets and cleaned those out. Love those little "surprises" you find kids hoarding like smelly socks but also Kinder yearbooks and Mother's Day cards! Donated bags of stuff to a friend with a younger son and am all ready to winter clothes shop for the boys before it is cold out.

Day 11:
1)  The Muppet Show. It was a Saturday night tradition in my house with popcorn and everybody snuggling on the sofa.

2)  TruFire - a local farm to table place where we always run into people we know and the food is yummy and healthy, ambience perfect for date night or an early dinner with kids, and very casual

3)  Anything but the rap my husband plays full blast in the house. Lately I have been listening to The Bridge on Siruis but my kids make fun of me because to them James Taylor like music is for old folks

4)  A 1973 bright yellow VW Bug with no brakes...it is a miracle with my driving I survived!

5)  This is going to sound pretty awful, but instead of my prior to Sjogren's nightly glass of red wine, I now crave PB2 powder mixed with almond milk to make a paste of sorts and mix it up with raspberries and chocolate dusted almonds

Day 9: Although it would be another "mouth" to feed, I would bring my horse on the desert island. Not exactly a survival necessity, but she brings me so much joy and I could have mini adventures everyday exploring the island on her.

Nobody asked "favorite movie" for the desert island, but The black Stallion comes to mind.....  ;)

Catherine, I had one of those VW Bugs in the early 70s so I'm thinking it was a 60s model.  No gas gauge on those, just an extra gallon and you pulled a lever to access it when you ran out.  I remember mine having trouble starting but it was so lightweight I could push it by myself, jump in, pop the clutch and start it that way.   :o

Hmmm . . . the years that have flown by since purchasing some medicines, medical supplies, and spices.   :o

In the medicine cabinet the oldest item I found had an expiration date of 2008 on it.  I also found several with 2010 and 2011 on them.  But I just bought them!!  Or at least I thought I had just bought them.   ;)  My how time flies!!

The oldest spice I found also had a 2008 expiration date.  At least I'm consistent.  LOL

I had recently purged the pantry and refrigerator, so I didn't have anything in either place there that was expired.

Did anyone else find some older expired items?

Day 14 of our 14-Day Challenge

Today is the final day of our 2014 Challenge.  We've done a variety of different challenges - I hope there was something during these 14 days that you liked.

The final challenge is a long-term challenge.  With the holidays fast approaching advertisers are ramping up their commercials on TV and advertisements on social media.  Retailers want you to buy, buy, buy, spend, spend, spend and will entice you with deals that sound too good to be true.  Some retailers are already holding their "Holiday Savings" sale (in essence, Black Friday) today, November 1st!

This long term challenge is to not let yourself be suckered into buying things you just cannot afford.  You don't have to keep up the Jones' having the latest, greatest phone or electronic gadget on the market or other current "trends". So many people are financially swimming in debt.

As the holidays approach - live within your means.  Don't go into huge debt buying gifts for people.  I know you want to make your children / grandchildren and family "happy".  Many times people go overboard on showering gifts on others.  The holidays are not all about the pretty wrapped gifts.  The greatest gift you can give someone is your time - something money can't buy.

If you are able to, maybe cut back on the gifts to family and friends and donate the money you would have spent on a gift to a local food pantry or organization that helps those in need.  If you can only afford $10 to donate, your $10 along with others $10 can add up and make a sizeable donation.  No donation is too small.

My final thought for this challenge - count your blessings daily.  Some days may be harder than others, but there is always something good in each day.

If you are still playing "catch-up" on these last 14 days, be sure and stop by and share your progress.

Thanks for coming along these last 14 days - I've enjoyed your company.   :)

Bucky, thanks for always spearheading our challenges. We always get to know one another (and ourselves!) so much better, and doing something positive every day is good for the soul. I love you like crazy!

As for Christmas, with 37 people to buy gifts for, I start in April --- I have to! I keep a spreadsheet with a list of what I've bought (usually one or two items per pay check) and I have a big box that I keep in a closet where I can keep all the gifts I've purchased in one place. I set aside a Saturday for The Big Wrapping Extravaganza which I do after I've got everything bought. I don't wrap as I buy the way some other people do, because I have a Sjogren's memory and won't remember what I've gotten. And the spreadsheet keeps me from buying twelve things for one person and nothing for another.

Bucky I do have some expired things I am getting rid of. lol....Oh and you mentioned spices. oh wow do I have some of those to get rid of. I will do that tonight. Tonight I will also get at least a few of those things out of my closet. God knew better than me that I needed all that for tonight.

I won't be spending more than I can afford, because we cut up any credit cards when I got sicker, and knew I wouldn't be able to work much longer which was a few years before 2010. We don't owe on anything, but our home other than the usual monthly electric, water, phone, small amount for our dish network, insurances, taxes, all that kind of stuff.

I can only buy what I can. I need another car bad, but can't afford one even used. We had our hot water heater go bad, and went without hot water for several months, but we managed. Dear son and daughter in law bought and installed us a new one. We are so blessed. Even with many needs we still as often as we can, send a bit of money to places we think really need it for food, disasters, and sometimes to St. Jude's Hospital that help children with cancer, and are never turned away due to being poor.

We enjoy during the holiday season when around Christmas we see  them ring the bells for donations for the Salvation Army. It just feels good.

Even though I don't go into debt for the holidays, I do tend to let something I might need in clothes etc. go to get my son, daughter in law, and husband something I think they might like. Also, my son's birthday is Dec. 21, my husband's birthday Dec 25, and my daughter in law's birthday Jan 2. So there is that too. lol....I do love sewing and some quilting too, and that helps.

Have a great week everyone!
Bucky I want to thank you for such a nice challenge you took the time to put together for all of us. It has helped me more than you will ever know.

Thank you, Bucky; this session of challenges has been both enjoyable and an eye opener!

I'm pretty good about expiry dates, since I learned long ago not to "stock up"on things I don't regularly use, in particular, spices. I buy them at a bulk supplier, and only small amounts......costs much less, they are fresher, and don't get stashed for years in the back of the cupboard! I did find a bottle of Vitamin C chewables dated 2008.......and I don't even take Vitamin C I'm not sure how it got there! Since Hubby switched brands of cola (I don't drink it myself) I found one lonely can of the abandoned brand in the pantry, dated October 2013. And you finally gave me the push I needed to throw out half a dozen older bottles of creams and lotions that weren't as helpful as I had hoped, so I moved on.

I've been trying for years (and succeeding in small steps) to "simplify" Christmas. We have always limited gift giving, and in the last few years, I've made a concerted effort to look for locally crafted gifts when possible. We like to shop at "Mom and Pop"places, not chain or box stores when possible. I even have a barter plan with a local yarn crafter, she will take baking and hand made cards in exchange for mitts, hats and scarves! I need to look for more crafters who will do that LOL!

Of course, last Christmas you might say we oversimplified.......power was out from Dec 22 to Christmas Afternoon but you know something? it was one of our nicest Christmases ever!
