Hi everyone.
There's one thing I hate each day and thats trying to think up what to have for our main meal.
I thought it might be a little bit of fun to chat about it.
Tonight Im cooking corned silverside with potatos in their skin, carrots, fresh from the father-in-laws garden, cabbage, also fresh from his garden.
Have a great day everyone. 8)
-
OK, I'll bite - what is corned silverside?
We had fresh vegetables from the farmers market - onions and romano beans - sauteed in olive oil with herbs and tossed over pasta with freshly grated Parmesan cheese.

This is our Thanksgiving weekend here in Canada, and lovely one it is, the trees are dressed formally in golds, oranges and reds, the sun is shining, there's a bit of a breeze and the temperature is a moderate 14 oC
Although Turkey is traditional, there's just the two of us, and my husband will be going away tomorrow for the rest of the week, so we decided to hold the turkey until he would be home to help with the leftovers. We had BBQ ribs with baked beans last night, and plan BBQ striploin with sweet potato, onions and green beans this evening. DH is a BBQ whiz, and is at the grill every evening that it doesn't rain or snow, until the snow is too deep!
Bopeep, I haven't heard "silverside" since my Grandmother's day, she meant beef brisket...is that what you had? I do love corned beef, and with those veg it sounds like our Jigg's dinner, a maritime provinces tradition...can you tell a lot of us claim a UK heritage?
-
Last night for supper was chicken cassadea's. I don't know how to spell it, but it's my son's favorite. It's a quick meal and is satisfying. Add a salad and bowl of fruit and wallah! A quick and easy meal. Tonight will probably be spaghetti with meat sauce, antipasto salad and garlic bread. Another quick meal. Sissy

Hi :)
I am so lucky. Hubby has taken over the kitchen. I only cook two days a week now when he works late. The kids 9grown and left home) said "How come he's cooking now?" His reply - I spent 30 years doing it and he reckons it's his turn.
He's quite experimental. We often just have homemade soup and bread but he makes the bread and he puts all sorts of things in the soup and it's tasty and nutritious. Last night we had stir fried sweet and sour prawns with onions and red peppers and stuffed pasta parcels. I'm not sure what we are having tonight yet.
Take care - Scottie :)
-
Have not had a good steak in a while!
We raise our own grass-fed black Angus.
Going to lay out a couple sirloin...and then head off to bed for nap.
Scottie, my hubby is like yours... feels it's his turn to do some of the cooking.
75% of our evening meal is deciding what we want....by mid day!!! ;)

-
Hehe yummmm it all sounds awsome. Maybe we will be able to get ideas from each other.
Linda thats right it is brisket. Thanks for that cause I wouldnt of thought of that name, I would of probably answered genko by saying corned beef, not sure if that would of been understood any better ;D
Linda it sounds like a wonderland where you are at the moment. You wil certinally be looking forward to that turkey when hubby gets back.
Scottie, we have an agreement in this house if my hubby goes to the freezer and gets the meat out I will cook the meal, should he forget then it becomes his problem to feed us both. Like lots of you guys its just me andsthe hubby now.
I have to admit hes a real brick, he never hesitates to just get in there if Im having an off day.
So whats for tonight.
Hubbys not home tonight so I think Ill do a " Joe S. " and chuck something in the microwave, either that or get in the car and eat take aways
-
I cringe when my hubby offers to "cook" for us. It translates into a BIG mess in the kitchen with every pot and pan in the house being used. He fails to realize that clean-up of said mess comes along with the territory!! ::) He likes to "spice" everything up, and our son and I DON'T like all the spices he does.
It doesn't matter what I fix for dinner . . hubby thinks he has to add hot sauce to it. ::) I'm surprised it doesn't add it to his cereal!! :D
So . . . I'm better off if I do the cooking. We get stuck in a rut . . . the boys don't like vegetables or fruits, so I'm very limited on what I can fix. Heaven forbid if a piece of lettuce should cross our sons lips!! :o
Tonight . . . hmmmm . . . what WILL dinner be?? It will probably end up being one of those heat 'em up salisbury steak frozen food trays, with green beans, mashed potatoes, rolls and tea. A salad for those who want one.
My hubby is a GOTTA HAVE MEAT kind of guy. ::) Not me - I don't mind it some times, but I don't have to have it every meal.

Leftovers here...chicken/dumplings and fried apple pies. Comfort foods!

I woke up from my afternoon nap and woke up to a wonderful aroma. My husband make green chicken enchilada casserole. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm yummmy. A little spicy but noting that a heart burn pill didn't cure. Have to admit I am a little jealous I have made the same dish but his comes out better.:)

Country Supper for Country Folks, Good eating...brown beans, rape greens* out of our fall veggie garden along with fresh green onions, tomato 'pudding' from T we canned this summer, and homegrown sweet potatoes plus frozen, summer grown MacIntosh stewed apples (so good and warm) on a piece of homemade cornbread.
All this food on the table for two old folks! ;) Wish some of you could have joined us...table seats 6! :) Sit close, make it 8!
Ate small portion of everything but sweet potato and thought I'd save it for lunch tomorrow. ::)
*Rape greens are a type of leafy greens that are fed to pigs because of their abundance of vitamins.
It's not as 'frilly' as mustard and much easier not to eat LITTLE GREEN WORMS!!!! :o
EPSON, Know you'd love worms for seasoning!! :-X One line for you, Epson!! Should I have put it a beginning of post...right?

Tonight I'm making macaroni cheese with bacon pieces and onion. Hubby's on a late - so I'm cooking. Only hard bit is chopping the onion. That will hurt. :)
-
We are going to have meatloaf, peas from the garden and baked apples. Nothing fancy. I hate trying to figure out what to eat every night too!
-
Yumm scottie I LOVE maccaroni cheese and seems like I may make it the same way.
Hi Joy Id have come then you could of bought a crowd to our place Our table seat 6 to 8 also All that fresh stuff yyyuuummmmm.
Now what to have tonight hhmmmmm hubby tells me its fresh lamb chops and all the fresh vegies that go with it. This is our own home grown meat. Not to be confused with the little pet lambies we have this year.
-
I recently picked up some eggplant at the farmers' market, found a recipe online, and made an eggplant lasagna that used matzo crackers instead of pasta and it was pretty tasty. I actually put it together on a Saturday night when I had time, and kept it in the fridge until we would be home to eat it on Monday. It included a recipe for sauce, but next time I would probably use a jar sauce or alter that part of the recipe.
It was very good and low calorie, too!
-
chicken tenders, mashed root vegetables and green salad.
-
Ohh Erin that sounds wonderful

It's Friday . . . tonight it's "DJ Pizza" night. ;D Homemade pizza . . . yum! I take string cheese, place it along the crust of the pizza, fold the crust over the top of the cheese before adding all the toppings . . . yum-o. I l-o-v-e pizza. I know some of you have difficulty with tomato products, but, it doesn't seem to affect me.
Hmmmm you say . . . DJ Pizza from Bucky?? Ahhhh, my little secret. ;)
Have a great weekend everyone. ;D

We seem to be in the midst of an unofficial hurricane; pouring rain, high winds and just a generally "stay in and keep cosy" type of day...so there's a pot of beef stew simmering on the back burner! Lots of root veggies, cabbage, a few potatoes, tomatoes, and just before we have it, I'll drop a couple of dumplings/dough boys on top. Comfort food at it's best!
-
Well, tonight all 5 offspring are out for a meal with their father, stepmother and step sis. I was dreading it a bit. Thought of going out to friends but too tired. So, I have had a bath, put jamas and dressing gown on, then made the most delicious fish cakes from smoked mackerel and mashed potato left over from yesterday. I've enjoyed the peace and quiet!
I read something about a 'Cook once, eat twice' website which appealed to me. I hate coming in and starting cooking so use the slowcooker a couple of times a week. Scottie - you're very lucky!!
Ailsa
-
Well, It was what's in the 'frig' night... Weather and time permit, enJOY the outdoors this weekend...have a good one!!!
Guess who? ;)
-
Hi Ailsa:
My husband would crash your dinner if he had known about the smoked mackerel cakes. That is probably his favorite food on earth.
Tonight we are having a nice borscht soup of beets, cabbage, potatoes, carrots, onions and a nice dab of sour cream on top. This time of year I make big batches of hearty soup to reheat for several nights. The two before were a winter squash, black bean, and corn one seasoned with jalapeno peppers and cumin and chili powder, and a Tunisian one with a tomato base, chard, kale, butter beans (big limas) and fine pasta, finished with harissa sauce (cayenne and garlic in oil). And yes the chilis aren't great for the digestion, but they do clear my sinuses and taste wonderful.

Hi food lovers!! I saw the new Rachel Ray show on The cooking Channel. She shows how to prepare make ahead meals for the whole week in one day/show. I wanted to post the link. Thought many would find these recipes useful. I am going to try some. I just need to buy more containers so I can store them in the fridge.
Bucky I thougt of you when I saw this show because I know you are busy are were looking for quick food ideas:)

You all make me hungry....I wont comment on what I eat for dinner...just to tell you that your dinners put mine to shame....lol!
Most of the time...no one is home here but me at night....and when I get home from work and errands...its all I can do to get something in me just to take my meds. As you can imagine...nothing as elaborate or healthy as you all are talking about!
-
Thanks Sleepy for thinking of me. ;D I looked at that site and the recipes she listed for 30 days . . . . well . . . . my family (and me) are very picky eaters. I don't think there were many, if any, of those recipes my family would eat. :(
We don't like mushrooms, my boys don't like vegetables, don't like seafood . . . the list goes on and on.
My husband is a meat and potato guy and he usually puts hot sauce or BBQ sauce on most everything. ::)
Lynn - you can come eat with us. :D
Bucky

Bucky...your pizza sounds WONDERFUL!!! I never thought of putting the cheese in the crust like that.....I love pizza! :)

Tonight it's home made vegetable soup and homemade bread rolls. :)

Didn't go grocery shopping so I am using what is left.
I am going to make a casserole with ground beef, hashbrowns and maybe taco seasoning and cheese. Just a recipe I had to make up in desperation:)

Tonight my hubby grilled hot links. My favorite!! But I am sure I will have heart burn later
-
Sleepy - what are hot links?

Sorry folks . . . last night hubby had a camera club meeting so son and I were on our own for dinner. We both look at each other and say . . . . ."McDONALDS!!" ;D
Oh, come on, give me a break . . . tell me you NEVER go to McDonalds?!? They make the b-e-s-t french fries . . . . I know, you're thinking . . . yeah, if you like your food cooked in grease. Well, I guess I do, because we l-o-v-e them!!
Can't make me feel guilty about this . . . . I don't eat there often and the best part is - I didn't have to cook or clean-up. ;D

We had a friend in from Winnipeg last night and so we went to Famous Dave's - Grilled Salmon, Brisket, BBQ chicken and all of the fixings.
-
Bopeep - Birds of a feather flock together! ;) (as I'm sipping on my Sweeeeeeeeet Tea.) ;D
Joe S. - we use to have a Famous Dave's around here - then they pulled out. I think they're coming back over by the mall. I've only ate there a few times, but it was g-o-o-d! We use to get the sampler and it would come to the table in a trash can lid - very strange the first time we saw that. :o
Do any of you have a Logan's Roadhouse by you? Ohhhh, they are soooo good! I love their grilled chicken breast, baked sweet potato, grilled vegetable skewer . . . yum-o!
Last night was chicken breast dipped in egg and rolled in Grape Nut Flakes cereal, baked potato w/sour cream, green beans and cottage cheese.
Tonight??? hmmmmmm . . . . haven't decided yet. Probably some time this weekend we'll have a big pot of chili.

Tonight - Stouffer's Lasagna and a salad. Yum!!
I used to live in the next town over from where they manufacture Stouffer's foods in Solon, Ohio. Stouffer's has a discount outlet store there on the premises (at least they use to when I was growing up there). We'd go over there and get their French Bread pizza by the case full for $10 (back in the 1980's). Yum!!
Stouffer's makes some realllllly good frozen foods. ;D

This has been a stormy weekend, so I stayed in and made a couple of things to eat over the next few days. One is macaroni and cheese with broccoli and the other is a winter stew that is traditional in Tokyo Japan. It's called "oden." When I lived in Tokyo you could buy it at street carts in the parks, leaning up against the counter under an awning to slurp it up. Much nicer to eat in the warmth of your own home, though.
Next thing on the list to make is an apple pie, but I need a rest first!

We grilled today. Burgers, hot dogs, and chicken for meat, mashed potatoes, squash, veggies, garlic & butter stuffed mushrooms, sauteed mushrooms and onions as toppings. Garden salad started the meal and we ended with several varieties of cheese cake. Of course we had deviled eggs for an appetizer.
-
Oh Joe that sounds so good esp the veggies:) wish I lived closer:)
My crock pot has been busy today. We are having pulled pork sandwiches and french fries but wish I had spuash and stuff mushrooms to add to my meal:)
-
Jan is a very good cook and likes to cook. She gets lots of positive complements for her cooking.

Turkey Soup made in the crock-pot with lots of celery and brussel sprouts. Very hearty and thick. I use my crock-pot ALL THE TIME!!!!
-
Hey Billydude,
Post or PM me some of your fave crock pot recipes. I just got some and love it!!
-
My date had pork in the crock pot today and it smelled soooo good when he opened the kitchen door to put the dog inside. Pork tacos for lunch for the week!
-
You guys are all my heroes!!! I hate to cook and I'm not good at it. I just don't "get" how to cook - it is not intuitive to me at all, though I'm a little better that I used to be because I've gotten more patient in my old age. Then you add to the fact that I am so wiped out after work every day... recipe for disaster (pardon the pun). Mostly I'm just trying to do semi-homemade where I buy the main course and build around it. My family and I are starting to love those Hormel, Jennie O and like meals like meatballs and sauce or beef tips and gravy, then I just boil some noodles or rice and throw in a veggie and some fruit and we have a complete meal.
I used to be so critical of myself that I didn't come home and make a homemade meal for my son, but I've decided to let myself off the hook and work with lots and lots of shortcuts.
Since my son doesn't really like anything anyway, it really doesn't matter if it homemade or not!!!
-
You are right on the mark, Jordozmom. Most important is just to sit down and spend the time together eating with family than that you put a gourmet meal in front of your kids and get upset because they won't eat it.

Night before Halloween...the cauldron (crockpot) is bubbling away with a seasonal brew (beans and pork hocks).
I know we all seem to love our crockpots/slowcookers, but I must admit...it drives me crazy, too....the house has such an inticing aroma all day and I can't dig in til suppertime!

Hi all
I cant resist telling you all we are having a real special treat tonight. A delicacy crayfish. Yumm my favourite decedent food. Horrifically expensive in our part of the world, but was given two nice size crayfish by a friend.
Really special, my mouth is watering already. YUMMM !!!!! LOL
-
Crayfish! I haven't had any since I was a young adult, stopping by my aunt and uncle's place in SW Louisiana with my husband and our first child, who was a baby at the time. My aunt served a crawdad gumbo that was fantastic, crawdads from the bayou out back of their house. What a yummy memory.
We are stuck in a snowstorm here in Seattle that left our very hilly city pretty treacherous to travel. I just sent my husband off to work with a big thermos of split pea soup I made for us to eat yesterday, hoping he'll make it to work safely, but if not at least he'll have something warm to eat!

I love reading all these meal ideas. I love to cook and enjoy eating also!!!!
Billdude, I have to ask about the brussels sprouts in the home made soup. I make a lot of soup in the crock pot but have never tried the sprouts. Is it a strong flavor or do you have a trick to tame down the flavor???? Curious. Irish ;D

Left over turkey.

OK, I'll bite - what is corned silverside?
We had fresh vegetables from the farmers market - onions and romano beans - sauteed in olive oil with herbs and tossed over pasta with freshly grated Parmesan cheese.

Sleepy I LOVE chips, in fact I LOVE spuds cooked any way at all. I chuckled when I read you stuffef yourself full. Id do that hehe
pan.music
corned silverside is a cut of beef that has been salted in a brine, a little like how they cure ham, although the taste is totally different to ham. If you get the chance you should try it, it really is yummy. Its also a bit salty.
Ssooo humm whats on the menu for tonight. I think anything thats quick and easy. Probably maccaroni cheese. That might go down well.
-
I made a huge Shepard's Pie along with Salad. really comfort food :) oh and topped off with a hot chocolate with a touch of ground ginger and a shot of Vanilla Vodka :D
-
Baked sweet potato w/ butter, steamed spinach with lemon juice and olive oil, quinoa w/ roasted almonds and tamari sauce, Nut-Thin crackers. Hot sweet tea.

I would eat that, Calli.
Tonight we had a quick meal: Japanese-style fried noodles (yakisoba) with lots of broccoli, carrots, onions, and tofu, and fresh pickled ginger as a garnish, with tea.

Now youlot have made me hungry and I havent a clue as to what we are having tonight maybe takeaways of some kind.
Its lucky you cant put smells on the computer lol, everyone would be drooling hehe
-
Tonight it was one of my hubby's favorites . . . . great northern beans and ham with cornbread. Yum-o!!! We haven't had that in a long time . . . even if I say so myself . . . it WAS good!! ;D It takes 3 hrs. from start to finish with this meal . . but, it sure tastes good.
Bucky

Well, tonight I made nachos. Chips, (beans for the hubby and kids), fajita chicken (already prepared - are you kidding?? ;), cheese, black olives and medium tomatillo salsa! :D
I did find something at a new grocery store by us - the butcher gets some flank steak (fajita meat), slices in in long strips, tenderizes the heck out of it, then rolls it. "Pin Wheels". I sprinkle it with Chipotle seasoning before cooking. I usually don't eat a lot of red meat but when I do, it is this. It is so good. Tender.
-
I just had some broccoli and cheese soup...good for a winter night.
-
Well it's summer here in Sydney, so we had a BBQ. Steak, Sausages, Salad, Potatoes in their jackets.
Merry Christmas to everyone.
-
Its summer here as well aussie mum, and like you tonight we are having a BBQ with all the trimings, yumm.
I LOVE summer.
I LOVE BBQ's
I LOVE food hehehe

I made my dad's homemade (used chicken broth) turkey soup today. He made this every year after Thanksgiving. I just happened to cook a turkey yesterday.
One turkey ..ummm...carcas ;D (with leftover meat on it)
3 cans of low fat chicken broth
3-4 qts water
1 onion, minced
5 stalks celery chopped, or sliced into bites size pcs
1 lb bag of baby carrots
*Other leftovers from the dinner
1 t. poultry seasoning
1 t. Thyme (optional)
1 t. Basil
1 Bay leaf (optional)
garlic powder
salt and pepper
Cooked rice
Place the turkey, bones and all, in a very large cook pot. Pour broth, water, about 2 T garlic powder, 1 T salt, and pepper. Simmer on med low for about 1 hour. reduce heat to low. Simmer for about 2 more hours. **BONE the pot. Remove the bay leaf. Add carrots, celery, onion, and * the leftovers. (My dad added stuffing (about 2 cups, adds good flavor), and green beans. Simmer until veggies are tender, about an hour. Serve over rice.
You can add to it, or take away. The whole turkey adds a lot of flavor.
**I remove the large pieces of bones and meat. Then, I pour the liquid through a strainer into a large bowl. I bone the turkey, then add everything back to the large cook pot. If you don't have the strength to strain, you can use a slotted spoon to gather any smaller bones. I did this today.
I would love everyone else's recipe, too! :)
-
I picked up 1 pound packages of hamb, turkey burg and seasoned ground pork saus and mixed the 3 together. I kept out enough for burgers for frying and froze the rest as patties for quick suppers.
Also had boiled potatoes and our newest favorite. I buy the finely chopped cabbage in the bags--88 cent special the other day. I mix mayo, olive oil, rice vinegar and sugar and beat the heck out of it. I also add a little bit of very, very finley chopped onion and scape juice off the onion also plus cilantro seasoning, tarragon and parsley flakes.
We are into this salad cause it seems to have just enough kick and is a "raw" veggie. I don't have a cooked veggie then. Cooked veggies get old. Irish ;D
-
I am using our Forman Grill:
Slices of Zucchini, red pepper and yes, papaya grilled.
Then grilled salmon.
I love to play with colors.
Takes less than 20 mins. to do...Yeah.
-
TV Dinners, to darn tired and brain fog to even attempt to cook anything, unless wife stops at Subway, we usually split the 5 buck hoagie

This is a great thread! I am about to make my grocery list for tomorrow and I am sick of the same old meals. So I scrolled through this post and I got some great ideas!!!
Thanks everybody.
Liz D.
P.S. For tonight, we are having steak on the Foreman Grill, jasmine rice and green beans.
-
Making baked rotini tonight... just dumping the cooked meat, cooked noodles, and jar of sauce and cheese in the dish casserole style :D
-
Tonight on this cold, wintry night a big pot of chili. Yum!

I try to cook a week's worth of food in 2 days. Tonight, Beef Ragout with rice, bread and grapes with peanut butter pie for dessert. Tomorrow is Roast Beef sandwich au jus with chips and fruit. Wednesday is chicken parm with linguine and garlic bread. Pork chops in slow cooker with broccoli and corn bread. Individual meatloafs with potatoes and butter beans and magic bars. I freeze a lot of meals when there is too much.
-
Tonight on the menu is:
* center cut boneless pork chops marinated in Italian dressing then dipped in an egg wash and rolled in crushed Grape Nut Flakes
* mashed potatoes
* green beans
* corn
Yum!!

Hi all :)
There are some GREAT meals here.
I like the idea that CAT1962 had.
Any one got any favorite recipes they would like to share? Especially easy uncomplicated ones. As Im sure you'll all agree most times cooking seems just too much at the end of the day.
Maybe I should start a new thread?
And whats BoPeep having tonight??? Im trying something brand new for me, Im going to attempt to make chinese Beef and black bean sauce. It looks easy enough, so heres hoping, fingers crossed. LOL
If its any good Ill post it on here.
Happy eating all ::) :D ;D

Hot dogs, chips, string beans and peaches. You guys seem to be such good cooks and I can not boil water.

Joe, I used to make dinners from scratch and love it. I don't have it in me anymore. There are easy recipe options for quick dinners on websites like Campbell's and things like that. I'm talking 20-30 minute in the kitchen type dinners but still have a meal type dinner.
I eat too much canned soup though. I think I have had canned soup and crackers 4 times this week.
-
Tonight for a snack, I mixed cool whip 16oz, vanilla yogurt 24oz, fruit cocktail 4 cans, and rice to texture = Glorified Rice
I had to correct the amount of yogurt
-
Cauliflower and cheese! Joe, that's one of my favorites.
Bucky, I had a friend in elementary school who didn't like traditional breakfast foods, so she had cream of tomato soup and either grilled cheese or a peanut butter sandwich every morning.
We don't eat meat so I spend a lot of time finding vegetable recipes. Tonight we had potatoes, leeks, and cabbage with cheese, seasoned with sage and garlic. Very tasty.
The night before I made a red lentil soup with carrots, turnips, onions, and spinach, and seasoned with basil, marjoram, allspice, and ground coriander, and we had my sister's wonderful homemade whole grain bread with it.
I often make a double batch of whatever I'm making to have another night during the week, or for lunches. I tend to pick things that are quick and easy and that can reheat well. I'm lucky that my husband likes anything to eat, and is excited if it is ready to eat when he gets home from work. Easy to please.

Speaking of soups reminded me of a tomato soup that I have made but not recently. I got the recipe from the cook at the assisted living where I worked. She made the soup and made home made dark bread to go with it. They had this for supper and the people just loved it.
The soup takes a little work but is so good and can make extra to eat all week.
Take a couple cans of tomato soup and add a can of diced tomatoes. Add milk to thin it out. I have used canned milk and it is really good that way. You can add as many cans of soup and whatever type of tomatoes you want. Crushed would add a new dimension.
In the meantime cut up some carrots and cook them in the microwave in a covered dish. Chop some onions and celery and cook them in another dish in the microwave. Add these to the tomato soup mixture and let it simmer to get the flavors mingled. I added a little sugar and the restaurant or large grain pepper. It generally doesn't need any salt, although I am sure that you could add anything you want spice wise. Maybe a little minced garlic or garlic powder. I also add dried dill and parsley to mine.
I think that each and every one of us could make this soup and it would turn out different and still be good. It is just the thing for a cold winters supper. Also, make some garlic toast with parmesan cheese to go with it. I will have to make it cause now Iam hungry for it. Irish ;D
-
Soup .... what a wonderful thing it is! If I allow myself to grieve for the things I've lost over the past few years, I have to say that cooking comes pretty high on the list. (Probably higher than my job, to be honest!) Most days I just don't have the strength, or the ability, to cut vegetables. But when I do I make my magic lentil soup. It's not as exciting as Genko's but it's very simple and delicious:
Saute a finely chopped onion in a tablespoon of olive oil, add two cups of red lentils and coat in the oil. Then add two cans of V8 juice, plus the same of water or stock. Simmer for a couple of hours. Season to taste.
A bowl of this soup with bread and cheese makes the perfect meal.
Chickpea
-
That's a great idea, Chickpea! I'll have to tell me husband about it for the nights he is cooking. He might actually do that soup.

My folks stopped by and dropped off chili this morning but I didn't realize it was frozen solid. Hubby just popped it into the fridge. I'm going to have to cook after all :(
Making homemade chili with frozen fries. Early this week I made a batch of hotdog mini corn muffins (taste just like corn dogs) and some stuffed with cheddar but hubby stuck them in a container w/o lid so they are stale. Shakes head at husband's complete lack of cooking and food safety skills.

Spaghetti and salad. That reminds me, I need to go get mushrooms.

Left over Sheppard's pie. My youngest daughter made it Sunday night. My wife had a piece last night and may have another tonight. I will have my piece tonight.
They have started to plan their meals Sunday morning after church. Then they go shopping. Then they make a weeks worth of meals. They are down to $60 per week for food by doing this.
-
Joe - good for them!! :D
Tonight's menu: meatloaf (mmmmm, it smells sooooo good cooking right now), green beans, cottage cheese and mashed potatoes.
I haven't made meatloaf in a long, long time . . . recipe taken out of my good ole' Betty Crocker's Cookbook. ;D (You know the cookbook - the one with the red cover that every young lady got either for her hope chest or a wedding gift. I am the proud owner of my Mom's Betty Crocker's Cookbook that she DID get as a wedding gift in 1950.)

I though it had red and white woven cloth like a picnic table cloth.
-
Joe - my Mom's cookbook has a red and white cover, but not like a picnic tablecloth. If you go to Ebay and type in: 1950 Betty Crocker's Picture Cook Book you'll see a picture of it.
My Betty Crocker's Cookbook is dated 1984.
When my husband walked in the house tonight he said, "mmmmmm, smells like meatloaf - we haven't had that in ages!". After dinner he said, "babydoll, that was WONDERFUL!". ;D
My Dad never complimented my Mom on all the meals she fixed. That's one nice thing - my husband always tells me I'm a good cook. :D

I can smell the roast that's in the slow cooker, complete with onions, carrots and potatoes. I think it's ready!
-
Carebear - mmmmm, sounds yummy. Don't you just love a slow cooker? The house always smells soooo good while it's cooking away. I think this is the easiest way to cook - just throw everything into the pot, cover it and let it cook.

I had to work tonight - so, when I got off work and was getting ready to head home to a bowl of cereal ::), my brother-in-law invites me to dine with him. :D
So, I ended up having Oriental Chicken Salad and it comes with bread. Yum!
The best part? I didn't have to cook it or clean up afterwards . . and, it was FREE. ;D

I have a box of frozen hamburger patties in the freezer and I am thinking of a burger with melted provolone, bacon and grilled onions and a baked potato maybe? I might not even put that burger on bread. LOL Now I am hongreeee!
-
Mskittyshell,
Burgers sound really good. My son just informed me that he's having Chinese tonight. He's 5 lol. Think I'll join him and order some steamed chicken and broccoli.

Not much!!! I fell asleep in my recliner for the first time in months and didn't wake up til 4:30 PM. Had nothing except some ham in the fridge. I had cold cereal and hubby had eggs and toast. Another great culinary event at our house. Irish ;D

Spaghetti with meat sauce and a salad. I make a fresh blueberry cobbler at 2 a.m. so guess we'll have that for dessert tomorrow. It was funny about the spaghetti.
My husband went to take care of a few errands after getting home from work. As he was walking out the door I asked him what he might like to eat since I would cook. I said I can make beans and rice or spaghetti, and I heard him say "spaghetti, that sounds good." So, I made spaghetti while he was gone.
He came back and I was so proud since I had it all finished. ;) He looked at the stove and said "that doesn't look like beans and rice...that sounded really good." No....it looks like spaghetti! Either I didn't hear him correctly or he told me the opposite thing; neither of us know now. We just laughed and told each other "what we have here is a failure to communicate".
Maybe tomorrow will be beans and rice...

;D ;D hehehe Meld 256. I believe its called something like Men are from mars and woman are from Venus.
I know with my other half he says one thing and I interperate it as a total opposite, but what the heck, it keeps life interesting and at least this way you end up having two nights meals sorted out LOL
Tonight I am having nothing because it just seems like too much trouble.
Iv had a few mishaps in the past couple of months, the major one being my Hubie got ill and they dint know what it is but its got something to do with livers and pancress Hes been in hospital for awhile undergoing tests.
and worst part is they dint know why, but the prognosis isn't looking good to add to the stress I have now taken on the responsibility of the entire farm which consists of only about 50 acres, but you add a couple of hundred sheep to that and it becomes busy really quickly.
Just on the lighter side, a couple of days ago the vets rang me telling me that a live vaccine that the OH (other half) ordered had arrived and needed to be administrated within the next few days and the longer i left it the less affective it would be.
In addition to trying to give my OH the attention he deserves I mow have added the welfare of nearly 300 sheep, that are needing either inoculations, dosing, crouching, which basically means you have your hand up one end or down the other, ( please dint be offended by that )
I want to apologise for this whinge on the wrong site but just needed to vent......SORRY
When I did what I had to do I arrived back at the house and starving, but totally fatigued gued I decided I felt like a good cut of meat so I cooked 2 porterhouse steaks, nothing else, just steaks, thinking if I just cook them and nothing else Ill be full and if I couldn't finish it then our little yellow lab would love the left overs and the OH needn't know about it.
I have to tell you guys I ate 2, yes thats right 2 porterhouse steaks and the dog never got a look in.
So whats for dinner at Bo peeps house ...... meat and lots of it
Sorry for the long explanation lol

Meld256, Jan and I both used to work for a communications company. Your meal is an example of what we go through. I will ask for something and be surprised at what is for dinner. I am just thankful to have something to eat.
-
Joe,
Yep, gotta keep you guessing, huh? You guys worked for a communications company. Those skills don't always transfer over to the home front. :D
Last Feb. and March I felt so horrible I didn't care what I ate either, as long as it was something. For weeks and weeks I didn't have the strength to get up to get myself a drink, much less cook! :(My husband was so sweet and would ask what I wanted. I'd say "anything; really, ANYTHING". There was no problem at all.

Tonight it was home made pizza. Jan made the dough by one pm and we drove 230 miles. She had to punch it down about five times before we arrived at our daughters. She used some of the dough for pizza and some for buns. The crust on the pizza was about an inch thick. The buns were 3-4 inches thick.
