Anybody have Laser Trabeculoplasty?
« on: April 24, 2019, 02:37:24 PM »
Hi - I'm inquiring if anybody has ever had Laser Trabeculoplasty?

This laser procedure is a type of eye surgery that treats open-angle glaucoma.

I've been experiencing high pressure in my eyes.  They have tried two different eye drops to bring the pressure down, but I didn't handle the eye drops and so they are recommending this laser procedure.

To be honest, this scares me!  I've never had any kind of surgery on my eyes.

According to the pamphlet I was given, some of the problems of this surgery are:  *  your eye becomes red, swollen or painful  * your vision gets blurry (my eyes already got blurry from the previous eye drops they gave me) * there is damage to other parts of your eye from the laser . . . and several other risks that the pamphlet lists.

My hands are sweating as I type this.  I already have blood pressure issues and worrying about this upcoming surgery is only adding to the problems.

Our eye sight is so precious, I don't want to mess it up.

I'm thinking of cancelling the surgery (they are going to do both eyes, one at a time with several weeks between the surgeries).

What I'm looking for, is there anyone here on the forum that sees an Ophthalmologist who is a Sjogren's specialist?  I would like to run some questions past a doctor who is familiar with our dry eyes and the effects of Sjogren's on our eyesight.  I need this info ASAP.

If you have any experience with this procedure, I would love to hear from you.  If you don't want to post on the forum, please PM me.

Thank you,
A nervous Bucky

Hi Bucky, I am also seeking information about this procedure and other eye surgeries regarding the impact they have on SjS damaged eyes.  I am juggling multiple eye problems at once, including macular/lamellar hole, macular pucker, cataracts, and possible normal tension glaucoma (the last I am trying to get a more competent dx), all in realm of having severe dry eyes. The glaucoma drops I was given only made my dry eye so much worse I was nonfunctional.  I understand how scary these things are.. I am right there with you on that! I also have BP problems and mine is through the roof too. We are sisters from another state. :)

I hope someone can shed some light for us.  There seems little to research on the internet and what is out there on SLT is mostly put out by the providers doing the procedures (and not very in depth). Anyone have any help for us?  Allium

Im going to text my DIL who is an optometrist practicing for 17 years. She is on vacation in Florida but always...always has her phone on her body. Irish

It may take me a day or two to hear from her.

Hi Allium - sorry to hear you have so much going on with your eyes.

Unless a doctor (or any person) has never dealt with chronic dry eyes they have no clue how dry your eyes can be.  How dry eyes can effect everything you do from reading, to being outdoors, to driving, etc.

"We are sisters from another state."  LOL

Irish - oh, thank you so much for offering to check with your DIL.  I'll be anxious to hear what she has to say.

Bucky, I heard back today. She said that there is a lot to consider and one would need eye history to study the issue. She said that if you were having issues regarding this treatment that she would advise a second opinion so that you are convinced that all the options are covered. She is a smart girl and knows her stuff so I hope that this bit of info helps you some. Thanks and good luck. Irish

Irish - I'm sorry I did not respond to your kind post concerning my upcoming eye surgery.

I decided to cancel my appointment as I just wasn't comfortable with the procedure and the possible side effects I would have.  I felt "at peace" once I had cancelled the appointments.  I haven't done anything else since then, I guess I'll just wait it out for a while.

If I went with a second opinion I would have to gather so much "history" from the current doctor and didn't have a lot of time to do that before the scheduled surgery.

Allium and I would still like to hear from anybody who has had this procedure done and your experience with it.

Thanks again, Irish.  Thanks to your DIL too.
