Most interesting are the financial links of the psychiatrists behind this to the UnumProvident Centre for Psychosocial and Disability Research in the Psychology Department of Cardiff University, Wales. This is a partnership between the university and UnumProvident, an American company which is the UK's leading provider of disability insurance. The purpose of this seems clearly to provide a professional justification for getting as many people as possible off disability benefits in the U.K. and eventually the world, by redefining as many illnesses as possible as mental. Mental illnesses have very curtailed benefits compared with physical ones.

John Garamendi, when Insurance Commission of California, described UnumProvident as the second worst insurance company in America.

In May the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) withdrew its support for the DSM. That should seriously undermine its authority.

The medical profession is not behind this. The psychiatrists are not behind it. It has been pushed by a small group of people with financial ties to the insurance industry.
