Interstitial Cystitis and Curcumin
« on: December 28, 2013, 06:51:04 PM »
I have had suprapubic pain accompanied by urinary urgency and frequency for several years, dating back to the 1990s. It has never let up and it has been steadily getting worse as the years go by. I have never been formally diagnosed with Interstitial Cystitis but, in retrospect, that is what I think I had. My plan was to be evaluated by a urinary specialist as soon as I had a few other medical problems under control. In the meantime, I started taking Curcumin 400 mg daily for knee and hip joint discomfort. After about 2 months of taking the Curcumin, all of my bladder symptoms disappeared (suprapubic pain, urgency and frequency). Starting the Curcumin was the only thing I had changed so I am sure that the Curcumin is what caused the disappearance of the bladder symptoms.

I realize that I was never formally diagnosed with IC. However, I was diagnosed with Primary Sjogren's in August 2013. I started Plaquenil in late September. At first I wondered if the Plaquenil had caused the bladder symptoms to disappear. I looked up Sjogren's and bladder symptoms and discovered that IC is common in people with Sjogren's. So, in retrospect, that is what I think I had. After thinking about it, I also realized that the bladder symptoms disappeared 10 days after I started taking Plaquenil so it was probably not the Plaquenil that caused the bladder symptoms to disappear. The only other thing I had changed was that I started taking the Curcumin about 2 months before the bladder symptoms disappeared. So I think it was the Curcumin that caused the bladder symptoms to disappear.

Has anyone else had this type of experience or has anyone else had their bladder symptoms disappear with Curcumin?

Dear Jasper,

Curcumin is the principle ingredient in Turmeric.

Turmeric Curcumin has been found to be as effective for pain as Tylenol by studies at the NIH.

Medline also has an article about its use.

http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/druginfo/natural/662.html

I'm glad you have help with your IC.  I have found that my anti inflammatories (including Turmeric) and mild exercise keep my IC pain away.

Tumeric/curcumin is WONDERFUL stuff, for sure.

I have also had YEARS of bladder symptoms, chronic UTI's, etc that all stopped once I got diagnosis and treatment for Lupus/Sjs, so I am sure they are related. Plaquenil helped, and methotrexate helped even more.

You might Google "trigionitis" and read a bit about that...I am fairly certain that it's the main issue I had prior to treatment. It affects a mucous gland at the bottom of the bladder, and of course sjogrens affects mucous glands, so no surprise it is part of the disease profile.

I am sorry you have had to deal with IC symptoms - it's such a maddening sensation. :( Glad you've found relief, though!!!!

You might also consider taking D-mannose....it's also very effective at keeping things comfortable and healthy down there.

Jasper,

I suffered from IC for many years. It was dx by hydrodistentsion of the bladder and biopsy. I had a really bad case and was homebound for a year. I took the drug Elmiron for years that kept things at a low simmer.

My overall health improved and as I was out and about more, I would forget to take my mid day dose. Eventually I went off the drug. I did have to retrain my bladder to hold more urine by not running to the bathroom every time I felt the urge. I still had discomfort at a filling bladder, but the mind numbing, physical debilitating pain was gone.

Now, ten years later I have no signs of IC. Back then the urologist told me I would be on the medication for life. Recently I recounted the story to my new PCP and got the "look" as in, that just doesn't happen, and you probably didn't have IC. So, that got me thinking and I googled IC and remission, and sure enough IC can go into complete remission... of course it can return at any time.

Back then I had not been dx with Sjogrens and was only being treated with Celebrex for my arthritic symptoms.

So, for you it could possibly be the curcumin or you could be one of the lucky ones that went into remission.

Whatever has taken away your IC symptoms, I hope it stays this way! IC is horrible! For me, I have to say it was my most debilitating and painful thing I've had to deal with to date.

Wishing you the best!

My daughter suffered terribly with IC until she got her diagnosis. They tried to stretch her bladder without success because it was so scarred.
She was prescribed Elmiron as well and had an infusion added to her bladder on a weekly basis.
Then she got sick with Behcet's that nearly took her life! It took a year to confirm diagnosis and several trips to the Er.
They finally started her in Imuran. A year later we realised that she had no UTI's in all that time!
She was recently taken off Imuran and put on methotrextate and after a month her bladder symptoms return
Thanks to this forum I found out about the dmanose and ran to the health food store to get her some.
I have to get me a bottle as well. Apparently I get bladder infections without any symptoms.

Carolina ... Thanks for responding and for the link. I do think it is the Curcumin that caused the symptoms to go away. It is truly wonderful to not have those symptoms.

Sleepy in Seattle ... Thanks for the response. I will look up D-Mannose and trigionitis.

Sassygal ... Thanks for the response. I agree that it is very debilitating. That is what made me really take notice when the symptoms disappeared. I had forgotten what it was like not to have suprapubic pain most of the time and frequently racing to the bathroom hoping I could make it on time. The pain was the most debilitating. I do think it was the Curcumin that did it (although remission would work too) and I surely hope it does not return.

Tharrell ... Thanks for the response. I am so sorry for everything your daughter had to go through. It sounds horrible. I think I was lucky that I had to postpone going to the urinary specialist until after I took care of my other medical problems. I probably would have had to go through a bunch of tests and maybe treatments that did not work. Instead it disappeared after starting Curcumin, and that is a pretty innocuous treatment with a great result (at least for me). After all these years, it is gone.

Tharrell, I also had UTIs without symptoms.  Chronic in fact.

I would NOT have the infusion into my bladder or any treatments.  I did try Elmiron and was allergic (reactive) to it in about 3 weeks.

It isn't rated very highly as a solution to IC, but it's the only thing on the market.

Since it is an inflammation, anything that reduces inflammation should help.

D-Mannose has completely eliminated my UTIs, for almost two years now.

Lori and Cindy ... Thanks for responding. I just looked up Desert Harvest Aloe and I have bookmarked that site in case my symptoms return. If they return, I will order the Aloe. It is good to have a back up plan because the symptoms truly diminish my quality of life.

Hi Andreamarie,

I actually subscribe to both Turmeric (curcumin) and D-Mannose from Amazon.com.  That way they are delivered, as a discounted rate, every month (or two months, or three months).

Lots of places on-line besides Amazon.com.  I see that both can be purchased at drugstore.com, too.

And there are many places that have them in stores.  I tried looking and GNC has then.  I'm sure most large health foods stores would have them, too.  they are both available at Walmart.

Thanks. I use both websites. I'm also near a Whole Foods and Trader Joe's. I've read about turmeric and use it as much as I can in my cooking but obviously I'm not getting much that way.

I have never taken Curcumin but I can tell you that the plaquenil did not improve my symptoms.  The symptoms that accompany my IC come and go and are often related to what I eat (citrus, soda, acidic).  If I were you, I would keep a food and symptom diary.

Andreamarie ..... I get my Curcumin from Life Extensions. I use the Super Bio-Curcumin (Turmeric).

One thing to keep in mind is that Turmeric is very difficult to absorb from the intestine so when buying it one needs to be sure to buy a high quality standardized formulation.

I had been taking a cheaper non-standardized brand and it did nothing. After I switched to the higher quality standardized formulation of Curcumin, then the supra-pubic pain disappeared and my urgency and frequency decreased considerably. It took a couple of weeks of taking the high quality Curcumin to see the effect. The bilateral edema in my lower legs and ankles and feet also disappeared after about 2 weeks of taking the Curcumin.

I attribute it to the anti-inflammatory effect of Curcumin. My Rheumatologist totally agrees with me taking the Curcumin and feels it is helpful.
