  I also agree with Tivia.  I had disease in both ears causing hearing loss.  My ENT said it was genetic or autoimmune.  I had surgery and putzed a long and then had a bad reaction to an antibiotic and everything went wrong.

Yes, I think basically anything can set it off..medications-procedures included
