Scratches appearing on body (weird)
« on: July 14, 2012, 10:21:20 AM »
Hello everyone! :D :D

I've been perusing the board for many months now and just recently decided to join. I hope everyone is well. I was Dxd w/ Primary SJS in December after many months of misdiagnoses. I began treatment in late January (prednisone, then Cytoxan for two months). I can say that I'm doing great! All praises to God!!!!

I do have a question; however, regarding skin issues (I have also been diagnosed with Celiac and many food allergies). Every so often small cuts/scratches appear on my body. I'm not sure where they come from. They are not blisters, rashes or bumps. It's literally a scratch. I have no pets at home.

I've had other skin manifestations and my dermatologist did a couple biopsies indicating they were definitely AI related. We are just not certain what's causing the scratches. Just wondering if it's possibly a part of Sjogrens. They appear rarely and typically only one.

I'm currently taking 10m Prenisone daily

I guess that's it for now.  Take care everyone and keep the faith!!!

Hi,
I get them too.  It looks like someone ran a fingernail over my skin and some of them are long.  Usually on my legs, but I get them on my arms, too.  I saw a specialist about them and he called it a fancy name (forget name right now) and gave me some meds for it.  It worked well, but made it so I couldn't sleep and dried my mouth so bad I stopped using the meds.  Now I just put up with the "scratches".  Hope you find some relief!!  Are they itchy?  Mine were not.

Welcome, Blessed.

You stumped me with this. I have no clue what would cause a random scratch to appear periodically. I know there's a condition that inflames scratches, some kind of derma graphia, bla, bla, bla. I don't know the medical term for it. But that doesn't sound like what you have going on.

Maybe someone here has had experience with that and can offer some advice for you.

Welcome to the boards. I'm glad the steroids are working for you.

There's a lot of great people here that really care and seem to be very driven in helping others and sharing what they can to improve lives and minds with all of this stuff. So I'm sure you'll get something, even if it's only love thru this mess, which is a treasure in and of itself.

Take care...and stay blessed.

Yeah, that is what they said mine was...I looked it up in my medical file and he said:
the hives and "scratches" are not food related at all.  He did some allergy testing and gave me a print out.  Said I have Chronic Idiopathic Urticaria (Hives) and dermatographism.  Said there is no cure and that it will come and go.  Some flare ups will last a year.  Said not to take prednisone unless absolutely necessary.  Said to take Reactine as a base and then Zantac and Singular as needed during flare ups.  Best to check with a doctor.

You  may also be experiencing "prednisone skin," which makes trying to avoid major cuts and scrapes a good idea. I sort of scraped open a foot or so of my shin when I missed a step, and the doctor had a hard time sewing it shut again. I have had some surgery  since then, and the doctors haven't commented. However, the shin skin is really thin anyhow.

My coordination has always been poor due to brain damage at birth. I always wake up with new bruises and ouchies. It is rare that I remember how I did something, unless it was a pretty spectacular event. I do make it a point to keep up with my tetanus shots! And I know how to relax when falling, so I don't often do any really major damage. You can be scratching yourself in your sleep, too.

Those of you with balance issues, when you are going up and down steps, focus on that. Count the steps. Out loud, if you need to. I do! Use the hand rails. When going up, if you can, use your hands on the steps, too. That keeps you from falling up.

Hello Everyone,

Thanks for the responses. My apologies for the delayed reply... Is there a way I can get notified when someone replies? This is pretty new to me...LOL!

Everyone is is so kind and I'm so grateful for that. Believe it or not when I was initially diagnosed, I read many posts and was able to obtain great comfort from them.

Gardenlover-thank you very much for the information. The scratches appear from no where. I can literally feel my skin "tearing". It will sting, burn and when I look, there is a scratch. Really odd. I will check back with my derm and mention your "dx".  I'm very curious as is my husband.

Iraisin-you are correct in the love received via these boards. It simply amazes me.  :) :)

Slccom- I've been checked for drug possibilities and was told that's not the case. I am, however, aware of the many side effects the drug carries and that is why my rheumatologist is decreasing the dosage. She wants me to start Imuran...but, I'm very hesitant. Since changing my diet, I literally feel like a new person (no gluten, soy, grains, vinegar, pork, etc). I'm so sorry to hear about the brain damage at birth...apparently, it did not effect your heart (you sound like an amazingly sweet person). I pray that all goes well with you.

Thanks again for your responses. Many hugs to everyone,
Jennifer

My husband( no medical issues) worked in a foundry in the heat and humidity  2 wks ago and broke out in a rash like that.  It just kept coming and going. He did not want to go to the Doc so I told him to just take benedryl at night and I bought some cream but nothing really worked, it just slowly went away.
Good luck....

OMG!!!!  This happens to be several times a year since I started with autoimmune symptoms. I get a few scratches on my upper back and they burn/sting/ They last about a week or two. I have never had a doc look at them because I have never had an appt. when they break out and they do go away.

My fiance looked at them last time and agreed they looked strange. I had google searched this issue and found nothing so thank you for posting this!

Christine435...so glad to know I'm not the only one.   :)

I guess it's just an annoying side effect of the autoimmune issues.  Prayerfully, we will get answers soon.  :)

I was just mentioning to a family member a few weeks ago that I have a number of scratches and have zero idea how they came about.  They appear out of no where on legs, arms, shoulders, abdomen.

Needless to say after reading this thread I am going to be extra diligent about using Frontline on my 3 cats and border collie every month, on schedule.

Thanks, Blessed1! The brain damage was due to blood incompatibility with my mother. It certainly makes life interesting!  And as it is, I am really lucky. I could have been much, much worse off. I hear well enough, move reasonably well, and used to be quite smart (before Brain Fog. I miss my mind!)

If you have ever been on prednisone, your skin is permanently changed.

On a brighter note (not really!), is there any chance of bedbugs? Fleas? I sure hope not on the bedbugs!
