Saliva Flow Test
« on: November 01, 2011, 10:04:07 PM »
This morning I met with a dentist/oral diagnostic/associate professor/specialist in dry mouth (I don't know what to call her exactly!). But she was really lovely. She didn't have all the notes and took copies of everything I brought. She said she wanted to spend the afternoon going over my full history. She's ordered new blood tests because she said that being a 21 year old female, Sjogren's is not the most common cause for a dry mouth/eyes/arthritis (really?). She said that she thought Bechet's Disease was possible. She said after she's ordered these blood tests and read over my notes a lip biopsy may be possible if I can stay off Prednisone in the mean time.

Anyway, she did the saliva flow test. I sat there sitting in a cup for 5 minutes and she could barely get 0.3 ml. She said anything under 1.5mls is considered a positive reading. Then she gave me this really sour lemon crystal and got me to do the spit test again. After 1 minute I produced about 3mls.

I'm wondering if anyone with Sjogren's has had this test done. From what it seemed, if this was Sjogren's the lemon crystal stuff shouldn't have increased my saliva flow like it did. Anyone know anything about this?

Thanks

When I participated in the sjogrens study at the University of M I had this done. They used something to spread the lemon juice in the middle of my tongue. It sure made my saliva glands pucker up but I didn't give much saliva. I did have a little more on one side but still failed to make enough.

I had had a positive lip biopsy 1 1/2 years earlier so didn't need to have it done again. I also had my eyes checked and a physical by one of the rheumatologists. They also did a whole lot of bloodwork and sent me the results. This was the first time I had been tested for SSa-SSb and the results were positive as was my lip biopsy.

Sounds like you have a good appt going and that you should get some info from what is being done. Good luck. Irish ;D

That is very interesting.

Does Salagen matter? Before Salagen very little stimulated any saliva for me (gum would just stick to my teeth trying to chew it) but with Salagen, I get more saliva but only with stimulants.
Plaquinel, Restasis, Salagen, Arthrotec, Cod Liver Oil, B Vitamins, Palafer-C, Plaquinel, Metformin, Spironlactone, Biotin

when I was at mayo,, I had a salivary gland scan done with a radioactive tracer,, what they found was that my glands were destroying themselves,, a condition called chronic scleroising silidinitis,, no one gave much thught to it and I complained constantly that everything I ate would make me choke and gag,,, they quieted down for a while,, but in teh last week,, there flared up again,, I cant each without my choking,, both glands swell,, even thinking of food makes them swell,,
Last time I saw the New ENT,, she pushed on the ducts and said there was nothing coming out of them, nothing at all, well I beg to differ,, something is coming out of them, I can push on them and get puss out of them,, so now its back to no eating, its amazing how they just refuse to listen to a person,, how much misery thee in,, and no amount of pleading helps,,
