Title: Different take on SjS House episode
Post by: LAU on May 22, 2009, 02:03:52 PM
I couldn't reply for some reason to the last thread on this episode, it ended up going really off topic so idk.
I saw the episode before I was diagnosed with SjS. What I related to most was the desperation of the woman to get diagnosed.
I myself had considered seducing a really good doctor to make sure he took my case seriously and finally did something.
So I understand the "girl-on-girl" action. I would have gone that far at some points in my life to get a diagnosis.
The fatigue is just too much to bear when its "all in your head"
I need to see the episode again, I love the show and have all the DVDs.
Not only is a great show, but so relatable for people searching for a diagnosis.
I feel so greatful to have found my Dr. House, and I didn't even have to sleep with him!   ;D

Hi Lau,

I was grateful for that episode too (love House!) in that it brought some attention to SS.  However, I was terribly disappointed in the light attitude he took when he dxd it.  If I remember correctly, he just said something off-hand about using some eye-drops and maybe one other minor medication and that was it.  There was no indication given that she had a serious disease which needed much more than what he was offering.  OK, maybe they didn't want to go into a whole song and dance about SS, but they really played it down too much.  For many people, SS is a serious health problem and a show like this just makes an SS patient seem like a cry-baby (minus the tears!) about a minor condition.

I too, enjoy House, and enjoyed the episode, but what I did not like is the route to diagnosis they took. Spencer had a positive diagnosis for LAM (Lymphangioleiomyomatosis), which turns out to not be correct, and it is also not related to SJS.
The treatment was kind of bogus too, eye drops and methylprednisolone (medrol).

I did not see this episode, but I like House a lot.  Can you watch old episodes online at all I wonder?  Often times on these shows it seems like they don't research things as thouroughly as they should to have it be accurate, but I think they are primarily looking at the entertainment factor.

I was very dissapointed in the episode as well.   It sort of summed it up as "don't worry, its just dry eyes and dry mouth".   Dry eye and dry mouth are WAY down on the list of problems this disease give me.

I loved that episode and when I see a new doctor now and say I have SJS they perk right up and start asking questions that let me know they saw the episode.  The girl had way more than just dry eyes and dry mouth.  She had neuropathy, seizures, lung problems, many things that I have too.  I think Dr. House ordered IV methylprednisolone in the hospital to stabilize her.  I am sure she saw a Rheumatologist after that.  The show was shown twice last fall and should be shown at least once this summer as a rerun.  I plan to watch it again.

Hi

I have always felt left out, being in the UK, and not being able to see this wonderful 'House'. Well, we are now going to be able to watch it on one of the Sky channels - I can't wait. Hopefully, I will be able to add my two pen'orth!

Kathy, you won't know Hugh Laurie...he sounds completely American!

His American accent is so good (actually it's flawless!) that I had no idea he was British until I read it in a review.   :D

I always find that so amazing when actors change their accent either to American from their normal Brit, or visa versa. Hmmm, things that make one wonder about.  ;D
He does do an awesome job though. Quite handsome too when he's all cleaned up and shaved.

Billydude,

I completely agree with you, in-fact I probably wouldn't have gone to the doctor if it was just dry mouth and eyes.

Hi Lau,

I saw that show and I was not impressed either, even though I love the show!  I too have the first year on disk, and am planning on buying the second one soon.

I didn't know he was British either!  Wow, and he has great blue eyes, doesn't he? ;D  And about Dr. Chase, I too would kill for a guy like that, but oh well, it's nice to dream! :D

off subject, but hey i started it... hulu.com is GREAT, esp for family guy  ;D

well i just checked for House and they have the last 5 episodes, not the SjS one though. that one ran on 10-21-08 so i guess that makes it season 4? cause they're on season 5 now apparently. i'm not sure, but i know the name of the episode is "Lucky 13" but its not that serious.

Hi everyone

This evening there was a great interview with Hugh Laurie on BBC Radio 4's arts programme:  Front Row.  Go to the BBC web site and you can listen on the 'listen again' feature.

Amongst other subjects, he talks about maintaining his American accent for the show.  And he talks in his 'real' voice which is a bonus for those of you who didn't realise he was British!

I totally disliked the "House" episode about Sjogrens and would not watch it again.  I was glad to have SJS brought up in some format, but this was really bad.  It did not have to be mixed in with a bunch of questionable behaviors.  There were enough (behaviors) so no one can pick on me for being prude.  Ah, just some good tv without sex, nudity and the like.

McH............that was only a small part.  The Sjogrens was also "connected' to veneral disease and a lot of unnecessary stuff.  The show was very histrionic and that put a lot of extra things in the picture that are not connected to SJS.  We have a hard enough time getting this disease recognized without sex, drugs, VD and so forth.  I don't think we have anyone like that on this board.  Most of us are struggling enough to get thru daily life, let alone going out on drug binges. lol.

Oh Lucy, you've spoiled my image of Sjoggies as 'wild, wild women' (plus a few odd men!)!!!  Are you really trying to tell me that TV shows don't depict real life?!  I'm shocked and disappointed ...

Seriously, I agree that it's a pity that they over dramatise these stories, and it sounds as though with SjS they missed the opportunity to show how diverse the symptoms can be.  I won't be watching but that's only because I can't afford to have cable/satellite TV.

Take care - Chickpea

ps if you want to see Dr House playing a more 'innocent' role you should watch old episodes of 'Jeeves and Wooster' or 'Blackadder'.

Dr. House is very funny in British Comedies. We watch them on our KERA channel, and have for years. He is on Blackadder. If you have not seen this show, I recommend it!
Yes, his American accent is very good.
I love House, and I love his Brit coms.

I just saw the show last night and here is my opinion.
I was glad that House diagnosed her with Sjs without positive bloodwork.
I was glad he recognized that Sjs can indeed attack the kidneys, lungs, etc. instead of depicting it as just dry eyes and mouth.

Beyond that it was just typical TV drama.

I must have missed the part where STD's and drug abuse were linked to Sjs in some way.  I did not get that impression.  The sex did not offend me.  I just saw it as a sideline to the show.  I don't think there was an implication that Sjs had anything to do with it...

Just my humble two cents!

Hugh Laurie is a comic actor?  Really?  I never would have guessed it because he does drama so well.  Obviously his talent allows him to do anything a role requires, even playing guitar and piano.  I'm such a fan!  Sorry to have taken him away from his homeland, but I hope he and House are here for many more years.

Im not easily offended, and will stilll be glad to watch the sjogrens episode, i just recently watched the reader ( film with ralph fiennes and kate winslet) was both ranchy, gripping and a loved it lol, glad it did state that its not just dry eyes, i was intrested when i goggled to watch it online ( i couldt watch it it wasnt available to me in UK) that the final DX according to the house website was SJS with secondary candidiasis so for me i was kind of glad that that got a mention as well, as i definately had secondary candidiasis, will tape it and see if it can be watched by my son at (, certainly i will let my 14 year old watch it, some may not let their 14 year old be exposed to sex scenes and lesbianism, but i think it doesnt do them too much good to be wrapped up and certainly here you hear wose on the street.

  jesse..

he was indeed a comedy actor, for many many years, since a young lad just out of university, him and his gay friend stephen fry, was so different seeing him in a drama role, but since i love house so much, about all i really can csay i watch religiously, you can keep him and i too hope he runs for many years to come

This episode should go up on hulu.com this week, as it aired last week on Fox.  I saw it when it originally aired during the regular season but I don't remember the Sjogren's diagnosis.  I'm going to watch it again.

Hi  :)

I watched the House episode last night, on Sky1, in the UK.  I'm afraid I'm one of the ones that fall into the 'disappointed' camp.

Getting Sjogren's mentioned is probably a good thing since too few people have heard of it but not all the woman's symptoms were exactly typical. Some yes - the others I know they can happen but are rare. (Like bursting cysts on lungs)

I also wasn't keen on the idea of being perceived as a candida carrier, ready to infect anyone I kissed.

Take care - Scottie  :)
