Title: What WAS I thinking??
Post by: Bucky on July 23, 2008, 12:27:09 PM
I don't have an "official" diagnose of SJS yet . . waiting for my app't. in September . . however, all my symptoms point in that direction.  Anyhow . . . today I took on the challenge of shampooing my carpet by renting one of those machines and doing it myself.  HUGE mistake!!!  Three and a half hours later (moved furniture, vacuumed with my vacuum, then used this machine that you have to empty a gazillion times).  I'm exhausted!!  And sweating bullets too!!  My words of advice . . pay to have your carpet cleaned by a professional!!!  I'm new to all this knowing what my limitations are . . . this ranks up there at the top!  (so far!!  hee hee)  My family can make ME dinner tonight, I'm pooped!!

Hi Bucky  :)

I feel pooped after just hoovering a room - never mind shampooing it! Well done you getting it all done.

Hope your family makes you a nice dinner!

Take care - Scottie  :)

It's good that you got it done but wow, what a price to pay. It can take so long to learn what your limitations are and they can change from day to day depending on how you feel. I try so hard not to overdo but sometimes I realize it too late. Of course during a flare you have to be even more careful.

Don't be surprised if it takes you a day or two to recouperate. Enjoy your dinner. I bet they will do a good job.  :)

Dear Bucky:

Just had to laugh reading your post - I've done the same darn thing.  Dragged that 500 ton machine into my car, into the house, up the stairs, down the stairs, hit my shins, ran over my foot, carried 1000 gallons of water and sludge, moved furniture, overwet the carpet, etc.

Whew  - you are so right about hiring it done!

An update . . . yay, when my family went to return the rented carpet shampooer they picked up dinner on the way home.  :)   Kinda hard to eat though as recliners, rocking chair, phone bench, etc. are all in the kitchen/dining room while the rug dries.  I finished shampooing at 1:30 p.m. Central time, and at 10:20 p.m. carpet is still wet.  :(  I guess, from talking to other people, that it takes a while to dry.  So, I'll leave everything "as is" until tomorrow morning when we move things back . . this time, I will ask for help and not do it all by myself.  Even after taking a nap this afternoon, I'm still tired.  Live and learn.   I've learned my lesson . . I will not do that again!!

Bucky, You have now entered the world of task segmentation. After this you will always take the bigger tasks and forget them, ask hubby to do them, hire it done or divide it up into tasks to be done several hours here and there. We all learn this lesson the hard way.

Also, if you have air conditioning this will help carpet to dry. If not set fans around and blow them across the carpet and out an open window. Carpet can take a long time. Depends on the length of fiber, etc. Irish ;D

Ooohhhhh Bucky !!!

I so know how you feel, but I've yet to learn my lesson - I have ivory carpets in my lounge area, and slightly darker biscuit colour in the conservatory.  Hence I am addicted to carpet cleaning.  Luckily I've got a 'mini' machine which is just great and is lighter to use than a standard vaccuum cleaner, but I still feel absolutely shattered after doing it.  These things seem like a great idea at the time we start but it's quite a different story half an hour into the job!!!
