Title: Prayers for Michael
Post by: Katybarstool on June 10, 2008, 01:35:32 PM
Hi Guys

I posted this on the wrong thread a few days ago.

Hi all

I told you about my youngest son having fibromyalgia and Raynauds previously, well he has recently had a couple of spells of passing dark blood. He has also lost about 30 lbs in about three months. He had blood tests last week  to test for diabetes and thyroid and also had   an internal examination, that looked 'ok'. Understandably, he is pretty worried, particularly as one of his colleagues, aged 24, died of bowel cancer last week. Michael is 25 and has a toddler of almost two and a baby due in August.  If anyone has any prayers to spare, he sure could do with some. His blood results are due sometime this week.

Thanks Lynnmarie and Janna for your kind thoughts and prayers. MIchael is hoping for some news tomorrow, so I will update you when I can.

Katy, I will pray for your son.  I am a strong believer in the power of prayer.  God's word is replete urging us to turn to Him, for He is our Rock, our Shelter, our Healer.
And that is what I am claiming!
I will pray His healing touch for your Michael.

Hi Kathyx, your poor son and family - he shouldn't be having to deal with stuff like this at his age. I'm sending healing vibes and hopes that whatever is causing this is benign and treatable.

Hi Kathy

I'll also keep your son in my thoughts. By internal examination do you mean a colonoscopy - or is that still to come? I hope you and he get some answers soon. Knowing what you're dealing with is so much better than the unknown.

Take care - Scottie

Kathy,

I'm praying for him too, and you as well.  It is so hard as a mother to see your child sick.  I pray for competent doctors and a benign, treatable condition.  We are here for you.

I will keep him in my thoughts and prayers. This is too young to be ill. I would assume they have checked him for cancer, ulcerative colitis and crohns disease. Please let us know how things turn out. Irish ;D

I'm adding him to my prayer box.  Have they done an upper scope too?  I  had an ulcer that was where the stomach hooks on to the intestinal tract.  It couldn't be seen with the colonoscopy.

Sure hope they find the answer soon.

Hi Everyone

Thank you for your prayers.  I spoke to Michael earlier. It seems he needs to have the blood tests redone next Tuesday. Apparently there was something amiss with one - he doesn't have any more information about which one, or indeed what was being tested, other than diabetes and thyroid. He has not had any other investigations done as yet, although I suspect he will be offered a colonsocopy at some point.

It's frustrating, but I think Michael does not ask too many questions - on the one hand he is concerned about the weight loss, and the fact that a colleague died recently from bowel  cancer, on the other, he does not have he mental stamina to cope with any more diagnosis. He also needs to get back to a rheumatologist, as he's not seen one for 4 years, and could do with being on different medication, but our NHS system does not allow you to demand to see particular specialists.  I'm determined that if he does not get his results and referral within the next few weeks to badger him and, if need be, gatecrash his appointment.

Isn't it difficult when your children are grown up and make their own decisions? I promise to let you know as soon as I know more.

Hi Kathy - I hear you! I get so frustrated with both my younger kids and medical appointments. I'm sure they don't ask what they ought to - or tell the docs what they ought to either. I believe they both refuse point blank to mention AI issues in the family which I think is so short sighted of them and there's nothing I can do about it!!!!!!!

My son needed a colonoscopy when he was 20 I think because of bleeding. It wasn't dark blood though. They decided he neede stretching and had a tight a*** but it was an unpleasant time all round. The letter he was meant to give to his GP is still in the house. (3 years ago!)

My youngest daughter has been doing a lot of very active sleep walking and she won't go to a doc about it and I can't drag her!

I guess all you can do is to be there for him. A worrying time for you both. I hope you get some answers soon.

Take care - Scottie  :)

Kathy,

I just read this post on Michael.  I hate that you and him have to go through this.  I also have those grown kids that just don't seem to know what to ask or find out at doc. appts., but then sometimes neither do I.

My prayers will definitely be coming Michaels way.  Continue to keep us posted.  And be sure to take care of yourself,  sometimes we as mothers forget to do that.

God Bless Michael and you both,

Sue

Hi Kathy,
I have been adding Michael to my ever growing list of those in need.  My daughter leads it off, then I go on to my friends and those I care about here.  I'm sure someone up there is listening.  We must be making awful noise. ;D

I bet we have a special Angel just for us Sjoggie's and all our special requests.

Take care and please let us know when you find out anything.  And yes, our kids are really something else when they get on their own.  But we still love them.

Take care and I pray all will come right real soon.

Hugs, Pooh

Thanks everybody, your prayers and good wishes are very much appreciated.

Michael paid a visit tonight. He has had another episode of passing dark blood with his bowel movement and is feeling pretty scared. I suggested he went to accident and emergency, but he resisted. He has promised to seek advice from the GP when they are open after the weekend.

I'm trying not to push him, as he is a sensitive lad, and I don't want to worry him unduly. I'm wondering if it could be related to something like Crohn's - his elder brother was tested a few years ago. Nothing found, but he has had bowel poblems for a few years. Anyway, let's just hope Michael gets somewhere with the doctor next week.

Tonight we are looking after Michael's young son, Logan overnight. He will be 2 on Monday so hubby and I are taking him to buy his first bike tomorrow, It will also give Michael and Sarah a chance to rest. Sarah has two weeks left to work before she goes on maternity leave. She is a little anaemic and very tired, so hopefully they will have a restful morning before we take Logan back after lunch.

I hope you all have a painfree, peaceful weekend.

God bless.

Hi Kathy

Just reading your posts on Michael. I wondered if crohns might be to blame, my colleague at work has been off with it, she lost loads of weight, feeling unwell and passed bloody stools, she's only 24, but good news is that she has been treated, had surgery and is gaining weight and on the mend.

I pray that what's happening to Michael will be treatable and he too will recover. I pray also for you Kathy as mum of older children its incredibly hard not to feel like we need to take over their decisions, but they are adults aren't they.

Sometimes going to the accident and emergency gets things moving, so im sure if he gets worse he will know thats the next step.

Please take care, and i pray hard for Michael. Keep us updated.

Also I hope you have a lovely day with logon.

Take care
Loulou

Kathy,

Sorry I'm a bit late, but I just wanted to send my *hugs* and good thoughts your direction.  I hope your sons doctors will get to the bottom of it soon!  As a 24 year old myself, I sometimes feel bullied by doctors.  I really think there is a lot of reverse age discrimination against young people with medical problems.  Something that really helps is having a list of questions you want to ask your doctor and bringing along 2 copies.  One for you and one for your doctor.  That way your doc will see your questions even if you get too intimidated to bring them up.

Katy  -  I have been reading your post about your son and have included him on our prayer group list.  I hope ya'll will receive a definitive answer soon.  I know two people with Crohn's and they had very similar symptoms.  Although not necessarily the news you may want to hear it is something you can treat with medication and life style changes.

Keep up being the good mom.  My daughter has asthma and I know she gets tired of my advise all the time but then again she knows I care.  Believe me even though they may not always follow through with what you advise just having mom around fussing is a big moral booster.

Hope you all have an answer soon.  Take care.  Birthday hugs to the little man.

If it does turn out to be Crohns, there is an exciting new treatment researched by Penn State called low dose naltextrone which brought about a whopping 67% remission rate in their clinical trials.

Hi Folks

Thank you. I have seen Michael today when he came for a BBQ for Father's Day. Every time I see him, he looks a little thinner. He also has very little appetite, which I guess explains his weight loss to some extent. I had a word with Sarah and she promised to make him see a doctor when he goes for his blood test on Tuesday, so hopefully, that will push a diagnosis forward.

Lauren, it's a lovely idea that Michael should take a list with him, but he just wouldn't do that. He would be afraid of offending the doctor.  I would definitely do it, but then, I am not as afraid of them as Michael is.

Speak soon.

Katyx, I recently read a book about a guy who was literally dying of Chrons disease. He went from 180 to 104 lbs.  He went to over 70 different doctors and four countries to get help.
He finally found a treatment that worked and has healed his body of it.  THe book is called, "THe Maker's Diet."  It is an incredible story.  After reading it I am trying to put some of his principles into practice with my eating habits.
YOu can order the book on-line.  I am still praying foryour son too, and you.

Thanks everyone

Michael had the bloods done yesterday - results due sometime next week. He has lost another 7 pounds in the last 3 or 4 weeks - a total of 2 1/2 stones now in a few months. He looks very thin and he is obviously worrying.

Apparently, they think the thyroid is OK, but not sure. Their main concern is diabetes. He has to go for some sugar test after the new blood results are back. He didn't tell the nurse he had had further bleeding, but has promised that he will tell them when he goes back for his results. He also has to persue a rheumatology appointment that he was promised last year, but for one reason or another, has never happened.

It's really frustrating. On the one hand Michael promises to be upfront with the medical people, on the other hand, he is frightened to know what is wrong. I have offered to pay for him an appointment with a gastro/bowel doctor, but I think if he is upfront, an NHS appointment would be given pretty quick.

By the way, please include Sarah in your prayers. Her baby is not due for 8 weeks, but she was having niggling pains yesterday. It's probably Braxton hicks or an infection. Hopefully it's not the baby. A prem baby is the last thing they need just now.

Will update you when I have some news.

Kathy

Hi Kathy  :)

I agree with you. He would get a quick NHS appointment under the circumstances and particularly regarding the weight loss and bleeding. My son got an appointment really quickly when he'd had some bleeding and I got an appointment quickly when my bowel habits changed. He needs to be honest with them.

Hi Guys

Sorry not to update you sooner, but I have been away from home for a couple of days.

Michael went for his blood results to the healthcentre yesterday. He saw the nurse, who said his sugar levels were a little high. He has another appointment with her on Friday to have a glucose tolerance test (I think), and then an appointment next week with the GP to discuss the results. He has assured me that he will talk to the doctor again about the bleeding at that appointment. The bleeding doesn't happen every day, but it still is happening.

He's feeling very tired at the moment, and beating himself up about not being able to finish mowing the grass on his day off. He thinks he is having a flare up of his fibromyalgia, and he knows he needs to push for a rheumatology appointment. I think he is a bit overwhelmed, but trying to appear nonchalant as he doesn't want to worry Sarah too much.

I told him he had Sjoggie people praying for him, and he was pretty pleased. He is a Christian, although he doesn't go to church. However, I know he has faith. One example was on 9/11. He came home from work and asked could we go to church to pray for the victims of the twin towers. I was amazed and delighted.

I send positive thoughts for your family, and hope you will keep well. Sounds like you have a lovely consiencious son there.

Hi
Michael saw the Gp on Wednesday. He does not have diabetes  :D However, they are now going to pursue to bowel problem and he has been referred to a specialist at the end of the month.

Michael has not lost any weight this week, but is looking very strained. He is busy with the little one, who has decided he wants to be a daddy's boy.  I think he is relieved about getting the referral, but has been googling bowel problems and frightened himseld with possible outcomes. So, prayers for his peace of mind are all I can ask of you for now.  I will let you know as soon as we find anything out.

Thanks for your interest and concern - it is much appreciated.

HI Everyone

Michael had an appointment with the bowel person yesterday. The outcome is that the colonoscopy will be done within the nezt two weeks He has lost around another 5 lbs, but I think that is with worry about going to the hospital, rather than anything else.

My batteries had gone flat this past few days. I started feeling tired last weekend, and rested as much as possible, but hit the brick wall on Wednesday. I have spent the last few days mainly in bed. It just goes to show, you can't take the 'good days' for granted. SJS certainly comes back to bite you on the b*m :(

Hope everyone is well and happy.

God bless

Hi Kathy  :)

I'm not surprised your batteries have gone flat. You'll be worrying about Michael as much, if not more, than he's worrying himself. Glad their looking into things quickly. (I could say hope they get to the bottom of it soon) but that may not be a very good choice of words!  ;)

Tell Michael to have some vaseline handy when he has his prep for his colonoscopy. Vaseline can help you getting red raw!!! It really helps. Use after wiping ready for the next time.

Take care - Scottie  :)

I spent the most of 4 days resting, in bed - I think the meltdown began  :D I'm happy to say, I'm back at work. Physically, very slow, but mentally, much chirpier. I realized if I stayed at home any longer, I would fall into that black hole of depression.

So resting, and doing paperwork etc, but not walking very far.

I've had way too much company this summer.  As soon as one herd leaves another seems to arrive.

Truly it is wearing me out.  Everyone says "a couple days" then they just will not leave!

I hate that I've turned into such a grump about house guests.  I hate Sjogren's for this.

Thinking of you feeling blue is distressing!  I hate Sjogren's for that too!  So many of us suffer from depression.  You have excellent self-awareness to sense it coming on and getting outta' the house even if you could use a little more rest.

Good on ya' Katy dear!  I think of you often.

Maybe you make your house guests too comfortable? Could you say, if they plan to stay 3 days, 'Oh, on the 4th day I have promised to stay with a girlfriend', or something similar, to show they have to leave. It's not quite hoenst, but could be self preservation.

Hope you get some rest soon.

Dear Kathy,

We really think alike!  I DID say that to a lady who came for 4 days and ended up staying 12 BLOODY DAYS!!!

When she called (out of the blue) to give me the good news (that she decided to come for a visit) I said it was not convenient for me because I was going to be out of town

She called back the next day to tell me she was wrong, it was really the week before I would be gone!

What the heck do you say to that!?

As the 4 days turned into 6 because her husband who was in Indiana with their motor home getting some minor repairs done called every night to tell us how slow it was going, I got more and more nervous.

She finally said she would stay in my house while I was gone!

I ended up having to lie again and say my trip was cancelled because of business reasons.  Around day 10 I offered to drive her to Colorado from Minnesota because I was so miserable with her!  Luckily her niece invited her for a visit and her husband said it would cost more for him to pick her up here in their motor home than a plane ticket to the neice's house!

I got online pronto and made reservations!

Honestly, this episode has ended our relationship.  She is not someone I can talk to because she argues her point till the bitter end.

Anyways...I know I don't have very strong personal boundaries...but at the same time I resent that some people like to push and push...forcing me to put my fists up!  That is not how I want to live.  It is distinctly un-loving to take so much from a another person.

A week later my mother came and did the same exact same thing!  She initially said she was coming for 3 days...then after she got here I found out she was actually staying for 6!

In between all this my 2 sons (from college) have been coming and going with lots of their friends and girl friends.  I have loved every moment of these visits and they can last longer with no problem because the young people are so helpful and don't need me to entertain them.

Wow!  Thanks for the rant!  I know I have to get tough in the future to stop this kind of thing from happening and I can assure you I will.  My weak spot is getting caught off guard and having to think quickly!

It just seems that sometimes you can't win, doesn't it. Sometimes friends really overstep the mark, and that's such a shame. The best friends are those that don't make demands on your time or energy - and the ones that you can be totally honest with.

Since having poor health, I have lost several friends (and one sister) because they just do not understand my limitations - not all of the time, of course - which makes it even harder for them to understand.  I have one really good friend of 40 years - yes, we were at school together from the time we were 10. We have gone for years without seeing each other when the kids were young, but our friendship has never been stronger than it is now. I think that is because we enjoy each other's company, but have a mutual respect for each other's space. Friends like this are rare.

I hope you have had a pamper since your mum left. I love my mum (most days!), but we don't get on too well in the same house. We do best when we go away for girlie weekends.  However, we have booked a pilgramage to Rome with our church next April - now that will test more than my faith :) :)

Relax and repair, and enjoy the youngsters while you can.

Hi Kathy,

I qoted this paragraph because it sums up so much of how I feel when it comes to this illness.  I lost my husband because "I wasn't fun anymore" when I became ill. I gained an unlikely new friend in my former mother-in-law, who was quite appalled at his treatment of me and touchingly concerned for my health and well-being.  It is tough when one looks outwardly okay but is going through what most of us here go through.  My ex-husband told folks that I was a drama queen and that it was all in my mind.  That's another of the reasons that I am grateful for this group - it is so nice to know that I am not alone.

I hope the rest of your summer turns out okay,
Regards,
Rosie :)

Hi Rosie

I'm glad that helped. I just needed to say that this forum has been my salvation. We KNOW what it is like to have unpredictable health and limitations, and while is is just part of who we are, sometimes it can be a big part. That's when we need empathy and friendship.  I have had both in the few months I have been involved, and feel so much more understood now.

The sun is shining here - I think summer may have arrived. I'm just going to feed the family and chill today.

Hope you have a good day too.

Rosie and Kathy,

I absolutely agree about the support and the necessity of this website!  I has meant so much to me!

Hi gang

Just a bit of an update. Michael is due to have his colonoscopy on Friday.  He seems to be doing ok at the moment - I think having the baby has kept him on his toes, and too busy to worry too much. He brought Mia to show my work colleagues last week. One had not seen him for a year or so - she could not believe how thin he is. She said to me after he left, I don't want to worry you, but Michael just doesn't look good. I had to agree and was saddened, but it's good to get an opinion from someone who doesn't see him regularly. Anyway, we should have some new soon.  I will keep you posted.

Take care - Scottie  :)

Here's hoping that the colonoscopy will give you all some useful answers.

I'm so sorry to hear your Michael is still so thin. My Michael has been able to put some weight on again - he is on Omeprazole and also Reglan, which seem to be helping him digest his food better. Nothing is worse than one of your kids being sick. I can deal with my own stuff much better.

Hi Everyone

Well the scope went well, although Michael said he has never had anything so painful happen before. He was first on the list after I dropped him at 7 am. He was ready to come home by noon - very sleepy, and spent most of the aftrnoon sleeping.

The doc told him that things looked ok, but there will be a review in 4 days. I'm not sure what that means, as he ha not follow up arranged, but I suspect it means the specialist will review it after the holiday weekend, so hopefully more information next week.

Sarah and Michael are whacked tonight, so the baby is having a sleep-over with grandma tonight :D I figured I could sleep tomorrow during the day to catch up, if she is restless tonight. We have three feeds scheduled between now and early morning, but I'm sure it will be ok.

Thank you all so much for your good wishes - it means a lot.

Hi everyone

Michael finally had his follow-up today. The consultant said definitely not colon cancer or inflamatory bowel disease - thank God. He has order a barium xray of his stomach to check out what is causing the pain, but says that is more as a caution then because he thinks there is anything nasty lurking.

I'm wondering if it could be liver pain - Michael has had abnormal liver tests in the past. Like most youngster he had a couple of years of overindulging beer. He hasn't done that for a few years, and has only had one alcoholic drink in the past year. He can't drink with his meds, but honestly doesn't want to, which is good. Anyway, to get to the point, I'm wondering if his 'fibromyalgia' could be related to Sjogrens. I'm not looking for trouble, but when he sees his rheumatologist next month, I'm going to get Michael to tell his doctor about my diagnosis, to see if he thinks the liver enzyme tests could be related to Sjogrens.

We are off to Cyprus for a week from tomorrow, so I will update you if there is any news when we get back.

Good night. God bless.

Hiya

An update from Michael. The results from his barium xray were clear - another phew! However, he saw the rheumatologist today, who was appalled at his loss of weight. He had Michael recount the last few months and then ordered a whole battery of bloodwork, including those for Sjogrens. He also ordered a lung x-ray, as he said they still need to rule out nasties. So, some things ruled out, but more results to come.

Thanks for your concern and prayers.

Kathyx

Kathy,

I know this is a re-play of years ago for you.

Again you have a sick child....  Reading this thread takes me back to when my son was so sick and during that dark time before it was all figured out and treatment started.

I am sending my MOST urgent prayers for Michael, his family and for you during this time.

You and your son are in my prayers, my son had a spinal tumor, with a nerve running through the center of the tumor, i can understand what you are feeling right now. Just remeber to place your son in GOD'S hands and leave him there, trust God, he will take care of him.

The Bible says "by his stripes we are healed." May your son have a complete healing in Jesus name.

Have just caught up with this thread.  Kathy, oh how my heart goes out to you.  The idea of one my boys (men) being so poorly fills me with absolute dread - they are still your babies no matter how big they get!  I'm just so glad you have such a thorough health support who are exploring all the possibilities.  I hope you were able to relax and enjoy Cyprus.  One of the hardest things is being the Mum and you need time to recoup energy so that you can carry on giving your excellent love and support.  I bet that baby brings a smile to everyone's face though!  Think of you all.
