Title: Let's talk about the weather .....
Post by: Bucky on March 24, 2018, 01:13:16 PM
Hi - since this is a worldwide forum and we come from many different climates I thought it would be interesting to learn about the weather where our members live.  Here in the U.S.A, we can have a wide range of different weather within 100 miles of where we live - than alone from coast to coast.

In 2017 there were so many weather related emergencies here in the U.S. and around the world.  Fires, floods, mud slides, tornadoes, drought, torrential rain, hurricanes, earthquakes, record breaking temperatures both hot and cold, etc.  Throw in some puffy cloud days with sunshine and it's a wide variety of weather.

Since this is our third month of 2018, we've had quite an array of weather already.  Here in the U.S., the folks living on the East coast have been hammered with four severe storms back-to-back in a short amount of time. (even our friends in Canada got in on the action too)

Today, March 24th here in Central IL it is snowing.  We've had the sleet, ice, heavy snow today . . . ugh.  Hello, it's suppose to be Spring here, and snow is not part of Spring!!  Thankfully, when it comes this late in the winter season it won't hang around long as our temperatures will be in the 50's this coming week.

So, what's the weather like where you live?  This will be a long-term thread so feel free to jump in at any point and talk about the weather.   8)

Oh boy.  Talking about weather is such a Canadian thing to do!

Yesterday the wind kicked up and we were expecting a full blown snowstorm.  Holding our collective breath we on the Canadian prairies watched and waited.  And waited.  And then one mere inch fell.  Phew.  And that melted before lunch time.

We have a lot of snow hanging around though, and it's hard to know when or if we should bother to wash our vehicles.  My new favourite thing to do is to deliberately drive my filthy car through the biggest piles of water.  What fun!  Nothing like spraying mucky water everywhere!

It's been a long winter here.  Snow, freezing rain, snow, sleet, snow.  And very cold and windy without a break since Halloween.  We are all so tired of the W word here.  We did see three geese flying overhead today however.  A very good sign that spring may be here very soon.

Hi  :)

Here is the UK it's been a long winter. My plants are confused. Nearly April and I still have snowdrops flowering. Mini daffodils looking good - no sign of the tall ones that should be around (well not in my yard) Aubretia, which should be flowering with the daffodils - isn't.

I am in Florida, so pretty heavenly on the weather front right ow with about 60 for a low at night and highs around 80-82.  We had a really weird spring with February setting record highs up in the 90's and then March getting actual freeze warnings at night up until about a week ago...
definitely ruined some spring break vacations with the cold.

Pretty sure it has been weird Spring weather everywhere this year.

As my 'name' suggests, I live in one of the Carolinas, North Carolina.

Usually by now we are in full fledged Spring.  And actually we are, BUT up until today it has been colder and damper and grayer than usual.

Natives and long time residents complain bitterly about this cold/damp/gray weather.  I am, however, a refugee from north of the snow line.  So for me, the fact that it didn't rise to 75, until TODAY, hasn't left me complaining.  We don't have 20 inches of snow!  And we almost never will.

We left the 'north' in 1994 (12 years in Georgia, 4 years in the high desert area of Texas, and now 8 years in NC), and I've never missed the north one bit.

I haven't worn a heavy coat ONCE this year, nor gloves, nor a scarf, boots or a hat.

Regards,  Elaine

I am beginning to thing that winter will never end here in Western Canada.  It's been snowing AGAIN and the temperature is plummeting to -20 Celsius this week, with "highs" around -9.  And even more snow.

Poor Easter bunny!  He's going to have a miserable time hoppy through the snow in that cold on Sunday.

I'd like to move to a warmer climate but the family lives here, and I'm rather have frozen cheeks than a broken heart.

Oh, Carebear!  I have photos of kids in heavy coats and boots, looking for Easter Eggs in the snow!

We come from families who 'moved away', routinely.  So our years in New England were actually far from extended family, who were in Iowa and Kansas, both above the snow line.  When we moved below the 'snow line' in 1994 we had one son entering Medical School, and the other already 8 years living in Paris.  So we didn't leave family, just long time friends who themselves were relocating for various reasons.

And our move to Texas, was to be near our younger son, to help with family while he was serving in the military and had to do a medical tour in Iraq.  So we know the importance of family, for sure.

Now, here in NC our younger son lives about 10 miles away, with his wife and four children.  So we have family near by, and no frozen cheeks.  We are so very lucky, in this case.

But I truly understand that frozen cheeks are far preferable to broken hearts.

As I write it is already above 60 degrees (15 Celsius) at 9 am!   And sunny.  No Easter Eggs in the snow, but now our grandchildren are too old for the Easter Bunny.

Regards,  Elaine

Elaine, you are really fortunate to have lived in all sorts of climates.  I envy your warm winter and Spring.

It's cold but very bright and sunny outside right now.  So we have that going for us.  One thing about having such a short summer is that we truly appreciate it and make the best of it while it's here.  Or at least we try.

The egg hunt will be filled with lots of giggles and smiles.  That will warm my heart even if it won't warm the great outdoors!

The snow storm we had on Saturday dumped 8-9" of snow on us.   :(  However, the good news is that it's all gone now!   ;D  That's the good thing about it snowing this late in winter (which is really spring, but somehow, Mother Nature wasn't informed!).

My daylilies are pushing up through the ground, the birds are happily chirping, the trees have buds on them, the squirrels are trying to find their nuts they hid in the fall, the grass has greened up . . . spring is definitely in the air here in IL.

We're suppose to be in the 50's today and tomorrow, and then back into the 30's on Sunday.  Ugh!  Maybe that will be the last of the 30's for a while . . . I hope!

April 9th, and we are expecting a high temperature of 5 degrees Celsius.  This will be the first time we've been above freezing here in Alberta for well over a month.  Some snow is expected tomorrow.

Can someone please let Mother Nature know that we are soooo tired of winter up here?

Ah, the uncertainty of early spring weather!  Sunday night into Monday morning it snowed 2", by noon on Monday it was all gone!!   :D  THAT'S more like it - snow for a couple hours and then gone!

This past weekend we traveled out-of-state for my nieces wedding.  We drove through snow showers on and off both coming and going but thankfully, there was nothing on the roads.

Right now, the temperature is 37 degrees climbing to 47 degrees today - and Mr. Sunshine is out for the moment.   8)  By Thursday, the temperature is "suppose" to be around 70!!  We'll see if that actually happens.

Enjoy your day - whatever the weather is where you live.

I could really do with some sunshine. The snow has gone but it's rained and rained and if it's not raining it's grey and heavy.

:( I need to live in the moon? I also have systemic lupus autonomic neuropathy ( CAN NOT SWEAT) AND well good ole sjogrens. The cold bothers my skin for many reasons BUT the  dryness!! yi yi yikes!!!!. I get constant instant sinus infections and next week consult with an oral surgeon. I am losing three front bottom teeth. Although by the grace of God, I received a grant, I still have to use food money for my portion of payment. . I am NOT whining. I am grate for the smallest of things, but I am sad! I have spent a FORTUNE ON eye lubricant, nasal gel, mouth treatment, biotene gel, and as soon as I fill one cavity? Here is another. So where to live? Well! I have great doctors here, and wonderful friends. I love in the Northeast. N.H. I hope to add something to this website. So happy to be here!!!!!!

Good morning all.  It?s 9am here in south east Florida.  It?s 78 degrees and sunny. Here the weather is pretty much the same all year round. We had some very small tornadoes this week in my area, destroyed the canopy on my gazebo but no other damage. I would love to experience different seasons and weather. I have actually NEVER seen snow in my life. I would love to see a snowy winter holiday or leaves changing colors. But I can go to the beach all year and it?s about 0.2 miles from my house. I love hearing all your weather stories. I hope everyone has a great day!

I've experienced snow all my life!  Where I live in IL, it doesn't snow as much as it did when I lived in the snow belt of N.E. Ohio, but I would be happy with no snow (I think).  ;)  I love the fall colors and wish it would last longer than it does.

I'm sorry to hear your canopy on your gazebo was destroyed in the weather, but thankful you had no other damage.  Tornadoes come through IL quite frequently - we've had two come through in recent years within 6 miles of my home!  Too close!  It's devastating to see the amount of damage that can occur from a tornado that totally destroys property in a matter of minutes.

Today has been a chilly, wet, sleepy kind of day here.  We're expecting more rain overnight into Sunday with some snow added in for good measure!   ???  Enough of the snow already!!  Several states are getting dumped on again with snow this weekend - we're talking over a foot of snow!

Those in snow country - I hope this latest wave of snow is short lived for you all.  Spring IS here . . . keep waiting for it, it will get here eventually . . . I think!

Madison - welcome to the forum!  Living in N.H. you have had your share of winter weather this year!

I hope you find this site helpful to you in your Sjogren's journey.  Those who come here "get it" and understand all the trials those with Sjogren's go through.

It is April 23 and I am at my sons and will have the carpal tunnel surgery tomorrow. I will now talk about the weather. It is gorgeous. Hit almost 70 and lots of the snow melted and the best cool spring breeze. I, for one, am more than ready for spring. Yea!!!! Irish
Title: Re: Let's talk about the weather .....

Irish - I hope your surgery went well yesterday.  Snow on the ground in late April is just wrong!!  LOL  Hopefully, it will all be gone soon.

Here in Central IL I think Spring is here to stay!  Yay - about time!  We've been in the 60's and will have some more "humid" weather next week.

Along with Spring time weather, also comes rain, floods, and tornadoes.  I hope everyone has some type of "plan" in place for family members when Mother Nature displays her fury and brings ever-changing weather to the area.  Here in the U.S., I think most towns have sirens that are sounded when severe weather is in the area for people to take immediate shelter.  I'm not sure if other countries have something like that or not.

Our grass has greened up and actually needs to be mowed already!  We need to have our mower serviced first, which I'm waiting on hubby to handle (if it was up to me, I'd already have had it done!! Just say'in!!  ;) ).

I love the sounds of spring . . . the birds are happily chirping away, the wild turkeys are roaming our property and the males are strutting their stuff to find themselves a woman to mate with.  The one thing I do not like about spring is these pesky moles and ground squirrels that are tunneling under our yard and making a mess of everything!  Grrrrrrr!  Anyone have any tips on how to get rid of them?

Our friends across the pond in Australia are in their autumn weather now.  Anybody following this thread from there that can share with us how the weather is there right now?  I love the fall colors we have here in the U.S., however, that season is so short.  I wish our trees had the brilliant fall colors year-round.  So much green with the trees and grass - we need to mix it up some!  LOL

Whatever the weather is today where you live, I hope you can get outside for a bit to enjoy the outdoors.

Have a good day.

Another couple of nice days but you are warmer in Ill than we are in
WMN.

My surgery went realky well as did the anesthesia. I really lucked out with this surgeon also. He was in and out after surgery checking on me and called me this morning to check on me as did his post op nurse. I was in and out in 3 hours for this surgery and eating at McDonalds 1/2 hour after that.  Times have sure changes.

I am doing very well and have taken 4 single tabs of 500 mgm separate times since surgery. Slept well last night and went out for ice cream today with DIL and grandsons after school and to barber with them. I have discomfort but not like I expected. I have so much less discomfort than I did prior to surgery. I was getting to the end of my rope with the left hand. Will do the other wrist in a few months when I am more healed.

Hope everyone can enjoy these nice days...I know the spring rains will show up sometime. Irish

Happy May 1st!!  Spring is FINALLY really here!!

We were in the low 80's yesterday and will be for the next several days.  It's windy here, so all the tree & flower pollen is blowin' in the wind . . . enter seasonal allergies.  I don't take any medicine for it, but just deal with the itchy eyes and stuffy head.

With the changing seasons it also ushers in thunder storms, hail and tornadoes - which are in the forecast for the next few days.

The leaves on the trees are popping out more and more by the minute.  We've already mowed the grass once.

Enjoy the month of May and may it bring you good weather to your little corner of the world.   8)

It had trouble changing seasons this year and we had a lot of cool weather this spring Well, I think summer is hear and I am on the 3rd day of using my air conditioner. Have a safe summer folk. irish

Irish - we've had the hot. humid, on again / off again, rain for the last couple weeks.  Once the temperatures get above 80, I'm too hot.  A year-round 75 degrees would be perfect!   8)  We've had the AC on for weeks already.  Some areas are just putting away their snow shovels while others are putting on their rain boots  . . . . crazy, crazy weather.

It always seems that the areas that really NEED the rain don't get it, and then areas that don't need rain, they get floods.  The TV footage of the floods in Maryland are sad - so much rain in a short amount of time.

I think in some areas of the USA even if you wanted a specialty insurance for your home/business, it isn't available (like flood insurance, tornado, hurricane, etc.).  It's a shame you have to spend so much money on insuring your belongings in case Mother Nature unleashes her fury.  Sometimes even having insurance isn't enough to replace what is lost.  I know some of our members have had to deal with losses from Mother Nature - I can't even imagine all the paperwork, time, phone calls, etc. it takes to try and fix things.

We're suppose to be getting some rain here in IL that is part of the remnants of Hurricane Alberto as it comes North.

Stay safe everyone.

The calendar says today is June 30th . . . wow, how did that happen??  :o  The months are just flying by!

The weather here in Central IL is hot, hot, hot!  Whew!  Right now the temp is 94 degrees with a "feel-like" of 104.  When you go outside it is humid and the air is "heavy".  I don't like this kind of weather.  I stay indoors and hibernate!

We're suppose to be in the 90's for the next week - ugh!  I can't remember what year it was, 2011, 2012 or 2013 when we had temperatures in the 100's many times (which is unusual for us) - that was miserable!

Prior to this 90+ degree current weather we've been having, there were many days that rain was the daily forecast.  Many areas (not here) had flash floods that dropped lots of rain in a short amount of time.  I saw on the news streams of water just gushing into businesses, down stairways and cars floating on streets that turned into rivers of water.

I hope if you are living in a region where there are excessive heat warnings that you take precautions to avoid heat stroke and stay hydrated.

Happy July 1st tomorrow!

It seems once again that here in the U.S.A. that we have such extreme weather from coast-to-coast.  There's rain and flooding in the East and Southeast, extreme heat on the far Western coast along with fires.  If only the West coast could get some of the rain from the East coast it would help both regions.

Our thoughts and prayers are with those that are affected by extreme weather.

Well, the summer just keeps rushing by in a big hurry. it is hot every day for a good many weeks. It rained so much around here which ended up being good. The crops were planted late and then all the rain and heat. The crops are looking really good around here and everything is so green and the flowers are just gorgeous this year.

However, the heat is getting to me. Thankfully the humidity is down some so breathing is easier. The humidity wiill go up again though as some county fairs are going to be starting and then the great MN state fair. Always humidity and heat during thee fairs. Then it will be time for school to start.

I am thinking our fall will come in a hurry as it went from winter..almost skipped spring and then into the hot summer. Time to get out and buy school clothes if you are a mom. Have a good August. Irish

This is a little "after the fact" post as I am currently out-of-town and didn't have access to the internet.

How are our members who live on the East coast in the Carolina's and surrounding states that have dealt with the fury of Hurricane Florence?

It is so devastating to see all the damage caused by this storm on TV.  I'm sure TV doesn't begin to show the extent of the damage.

Having lived within four miles of a huge tornado several years ago, it is challenging trying to prepare for a weather event that is coming when you can't control the direction of the storm, the duration, and knowing there is absolutely nothing you can do but prepare the best you can ahead of the storm, then sit and wait.

Thinking of those of you who were affected by Florence - when you get a chance, please check in and let us know how you are doing.

Hugs & prayers,
Bucky

After years of suffering I said to my husband today that he was right, the weather plays a huge factor in how I feel. The on again off again rain, more on than off this summer, leads to headaches, if not migraines, and sometimes to join pain and fatigue as well.

Ah for sun, more sun!!

The weather roller coaster continues . . . .

Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by Hurricane Michael and the devastation it left in FL and other Southern states as it continues its journey out to sea.

Insurance companies must have claims after claims after claims for all the weather related events of this year from blizzards, fires, floods, tornadoes, volcano eruptions and Hurricanes of this past year here in the U.S.A.  I'm not sure other countries have insurance companies that cover the earth quakes, tsunami's and other weather related disasters that they have.

If you live in the areas affected by Hurricane Michael or tropical storm Michael as it travels through our Southern states, please check in when you get a chance.  All the stress from the last several days and weeks/months to come can be havoc on your Sjogren's symptoms - please take care of yourself as best you can.

Prayers for those affected,

Yes. it is a rollar coaster and  got up this morning to snow on the ground. We had 2-3 inches and the trees are full but started melting as the day progressed. It is still around freezing here though. My son lives in the country and walked out to his shop around 6am today and he said it was blowing a little lizard at that time. This does make me nervous as we could have a bad winter to make up for the heat this summer. We have had a lot of rain in Sept in our part of MN and the farmers are having problems getting the crops in.

Weather.....we have so much weather we complain about but we don't have hurricanes where I live so I do't have that terrible misery. I just can't even imagine how one copes with all that water. God given them strength and be with them. Irish

Irish - I saw online that MN had gotten some snow.   :(  It seems too early for snow already!  Here in Central IL we had some snow flurries on Friday but they didn't amount to anything.  Strange sight to look out the window at work and see golf carts lined up and it snowing!!

My son lives in the country and walked out to his shop around 6am today and he said it was blowing a little lizard at that time. Wow, it blows "lizard" in MN?  :o  I'd like to see a picture of that!   ;D  ha ha

We've had a lot of rain here too in IL and many fields of crops are still standing to be harvested.  Thankfully, they got our soybean field the beginning of October.

Irish - I hope you don't have a really bad winter this year.  One good thing, you don't have to shovel snow where you live now - you can just sit with your cup of hot chocolate and look out the window.

Take care - I think of you often.  Thank you for all you do for Sjogren's World - we are blessed to have you on staff.  (insert heart icon here)

I went for my 3rd iron infusion today and haas a 25 mile drive both ways. It was so beautiful out. There is so much corn to be harvested yet and the golden acres were so pretty. There is still a lot of oats out also. The wind was blowing quite hard so that is good as it dries out the crops and the ground so the farmers can get the harvesting done.

Just to let you know that it has snowed earlier than this in MN. I do't remember the year but probably the early to mid 80's it snood around the first week or so of October and I think it was about 7+  inches. It was so thick on the pine trees and all the other trees and I was out walking around enjoying it. It melted but not as fast as the rain the other day.

I do have a nice view out my windows. I have 3 windows that overlook the back yard and all the pine trees and other trees. My building is a one story and is in a U shape with a a large garage in the back of it. The wind hardly gets back there so I do't get cold in my apartment and have electric heat. I bet I keep my apartment among the coolest cause you know how warm we stogies are.

Just cross your fingers the nice weather holds folks. Always glad to see you posting Bucky cause you keep things interesting for us. :) Irish

Once again, we here in the U.S., have been hit with devastating weather in recent weeks.  Floods, snow/ice, and fires that displaced many, many people and claimed homes, businesses and sadly, lives.   :'(

It seems like for years the far West coast - California especially, has had dry, drought spells.  This isn't the first large fire the state of CA has experienced this year - but, I believe it is the worst the state of CA has ever had.  If there was some way to send them the torrential rain that falls in other states that are already dealing with too much rain.  If it could somehow balance out - unfortunately, it doesn't.

There are so many areas that are picking up the pieces of what's left after hurricanes, floods, and fires.  This year has been a very difficult year for many, many people.

I know we have members that live in CA - I hope that you are okay.  In all the stress of the situation, please take care of yourself as best you can, stress and Sjogren's don't mix well at all.

My thoughts and prayers are with all those who are affected by the fury of Mother Nature (and unfortunately, sometimes the negligence of mankind causing devastating results).

Here we go again . . . . here in the Midwest we are dealing with blizzard conditions tonight.  It started out as rain and has since changed over to snow.  The winds are whipping the snow around causing whiteout conditions for those driving. Those traveling by plane are stranded at airports with cancelled flights.

Here in Central, IL there are different snow forecast amounts, I've heard anywhere from 3-8" for where I live. On the news just now the snow plows are even getting stuck and they've pulled some trucks off the road and closed roads stranding motorists who are out in this weather tonight.

It's so important to pay attention to weather forecasts in the winter months and if you do venture out, that you are prepared with a winter travel kit in your vehicle that contains: a blanket, gloves, hat, boots, snacks, water, shovel, ice scraper & snow brush, and to keep your car gassed up.  For us Sjoggies, it's also important to have any medicines you have to take daily to have them with you if you are heading out in bad weather just in case you are delayed or have to seek shelter for the night somewhere.

I'm suppose to work tomorrow, but thankfully, my job is flexible and it's not a big deal if I don't go in tomorrow, I can go in on Tuesday.  I'll see what things look like in the morning.  Our power keeps flickering this evening and there are many already without power on this cold, snowy Sunday evening.  Thankfully, we have a generator if the power does go out (best money we ever spent since we live in a rural area where our power is restored last after everyone else has theirs back on).

If you are having winter weather this evening as we wind up the weekend, especially since a lot of people are heading home from the Thanksgiving holiday, be safe in your travels.

Hello - the blizzard is over . . . this time around.   ;)  I would guess we got about 4" where I live.  If you go a little farther North or South, the numbers change.  I live near the Illinois River and it seems whenever Mother Nature comes through when she hits the water, she will sometimes split and head North or South and not continue on across the river to the East - which is perfectly fine with me!!

I did go into work on Monday - schools was cancelled, so there weren't all the students on the roads, so there wasn't much traffic.

As of yesterday, there were still areas without power.  We never did lose power even though our lights kept flickering all night.

For those of you that live in snow country, now is the time to get everything ready for the snowy wintry months ahead.  Make sure your vehicles are checked and ready to roll - batteries, tires, windshield wipers, windshield fluid, brakes, etc.

For me, 2018 has just flown by, I'm hoping the winter of 2018-19 goes by just as fast!!  In fact, if it wanted to skip IL altogether, I'm all for it!!   ;D

What's the weather like where you live?

I think at one time we had a few members who lived in Alaska, not sure if they still come to our site or not.

Yesterday (Nov. 30th), Anchorage, Alaska had a 7.0 earthquake.  From the news reports I've seen, it did quite a bit of damage to roads, homes and businesses.  I've heard that Alaska is the most active earthquake state here in the U.S.A.

I've only felt an earthquake twice in my life.  In both of those instances, the center of the earthquake was in another state, so we didn't get the full impact of the quake.

This past week California has finally got some rain - which is something they definitely needed, however, now after all the big fires they've just had, this rain is causing mud slides and flooding on top of the devastation of the damage from the fires. The rain has hampered efforts to continue to search for remains of missing people from the fires.  :(

Here in IL we've had back-to-back weekends of active weather.  The weekend before last, we had a blizzard a day after we had beautiful fall weather.  This past weekend, there were 27 confirmed tornadoes throughout the state on Saturday.  There is never a "good" time for extreme weather conditions, but it seems the winter months are really difficult as you are not only dealing with damage to homes and businesses and trying to literally pick up the pieces of your life, but you are dealing with cold weather, snow, and rain.

As is the case with all the various towns and cities that are affected by severe weather or situations, the communities pull together and there is neighbor helping neighbor and volunteers pitching in to help.

My husband and I have gotten the "gather things up to head to the basement" preparedness down to a science.  Thankfully, we've never had to retreat to the basement, but we do prepare "just in case" as we listen to the weather reports on TV and see the storms getting closer to our home.  I hope each of you have a "plan" in place before you are actually "in the moment" and needing to seek shelter.

Whatever the weather is like where you live, I hope you stay safe when stormy weather rolls through.

Woo hoo!

We have snow before Christmas, and 6 inches at that.  This of course paralyzes our area (Raleigh) completely.  Everything will be closed for at least two days, school mostly likely 4 days.

Yes, I know, this is amazing to those of you who live with snow on a regular winter basis.  But there are no snowplows to speak of here.

In fact, the local TV station had a person on camera following a snow plow this morning.  A real snow plow!

It is forecast to stay cold here (not going up to 80 like it did two weeks ago), so there will be frozen stuff on the ground and streets for the foreseeable future.

Fortunately we have power.  Yes, six inches of snow takes out the power in some areas here, honestly.

The falling barometer is making my poor joints and bones hurt badly, so I hope things improve soon.
