Title: Lip Biopsy - Started Plaquenil
Post by: ynevar on October 25, 2010, 07:49:09 PM
So I had my salivary gland biopsy today.  It went well, although about 1/2 way through I felt like I was going to pass out.  My husband said I turned white.  "Really white" LOL  I hate that kind of stuff... UGH!!!  The worst part of it was the darn needle!  After that was cake--other than my near faint LOL (I can't even see my own blood etc. anyone else besides my family I can see but mine and my kids makes me queasy and weak)...

Saw the rheumy after.  He said that he thinks I should start the Plaquenil 400 mg per day. If my biopsy is negative then he would start me on it anyway.  He said if it is negative then he would call it "Undifferentiated Connective Tissue Disorder" He said that if in a month I am not seeing any results I can bump it up to 800 mg.

Anyyyyhow our plane is boarding I'd better go!!!

Hi ynevar  :)

Well I'm glad your lip biopsy is over and its good that your rheumy is willing to treat you whatever the result. I have to admit I've never heard of anyone taking 800mg of Plaquenil per day. 200mg and 400mg seems to be the norm.

When I was put on Plaquenil I was told to build up to the full dose slowly. Also - always take with food. Start with a tablet every second day for the first week and build up from there.

Take care - Scottie  :)

I haven't heard of it either, and that most folks are on around 400.  I am curious what the dosing info is on that, because the paperwork he gave me states not too much in the way of dosing restrictions etc.  I have read 400 (but under certain conditions) your doctor may give you more.  I am wondering if I am the only overweight person here?

Hi ynevar  :)

I am way heavier than I used to be - at least 70lbs heavier than I used to be. SjS has not made me lose weight but hashimoto's thyroiditis has certainly helped me to gain it - and make it harder to lose. I eat so much less than I used to - and still the weight stays on!

I don't know how much you weigh but I reckon I weigh about over 180 lbs now.  I was on 200mg of Plaq for 4 months before my rheumy put the dose up to 400mg. Hopefully 400mg will relieve some symptoms.

Take care - Scottie  :)

Thanks Scottie,

I imagine I'll feel better with the 400 mg.  I can't imagine I'd need 800 mg (I am not huge, just overweight)... I sure hope it does!  I hope the 400 works for you too!!

I never heard of 800mg of Plaq.  I would be hesitant to take that dosage without double checking, maybe with a pharmacist.  Good luck :)

My Rhuemy wanted me on 600 mg a day to start.

BAAAAH!  I wasn't about to do that.

I started by cutting the tablets in half .. taking 100 mg a day ... then a few days later 200 a day, again spliting them taking them a little at a time.  I worked up to 400mg a day.  That's probably too much now.  My weight has dropped to 130.  But it's working well.

Your Rhuemy said if he doesn't see results in a month he'd bump it that high?  That's absurd.  Most people dont' see big tangible results for 3 months.

Be careful.

I've never heard of 800MG....400mg really messed with my digestive system. I'm now on 200mg a day and doing good with it. At one point I slowing worked up to 400mg, but after I was on it a few weeks I started getting stomach problems again. 200mg seems to be my good dose.  ;)

In researching Plaquenil, my HMO's drug encyclopedia noted it's often started at a high dose and then tapered down after a few months -- when it kicks in, that is.  400 mg is standard for the average-weight person.
